  1. Or tell them options are a fresh cut or dry 1m3 of bulk/loose split logs in a tonne builders bag pointing out that they will get 20% more in weight with fresh cut logs for same price!
  2. For price comparison advise customers to always enquire about the size (dimensions) of builders bags as not all the same size, the average moisture content, size of the logs (length and max/min dia and if possible also have a look at the product. We sell logs based on a min load size of 2m3 loose/bulk but quote prices per loose m3 which if they want a comparison a 2m3 bulk load is about 3-4 average 'builders bags'. We also sell 0.5m boiler wood split billets based on stacked measure per m3 as well as some logs and kindling in nets. In fairness I do point out that there may be a bit more vol in 'builders' bag than measurements might suggest as open top and material can stretch.
  3. Ash at 27-29% the firewood probably has as stated been " seasoned but not undercover", the thing is "seasoned" means different things to different people, it's the moisture content that is key, aim to get <20% moisture content to burn most efficiently, firewood in the log shed if kept dry should be ready to burn by late winter, the ones stored in the coal shed probably won't be as ventilation is important. If you sell firewood in volumes of 2m3 (bulk/loose) in England which is not certificated covered by the Woodsure Certification Scheme you must provide customers with DEFRA notice stating among other things "This wood is not suitable for burning until it has been dried. You should not burn wood until it has a moisture content of 20% or less" ... some might just reference notice on their websites.
  4. A Zurich insurance policy (Public and Employers Liability) through Clear Insurance Management (broker).
  5. Re Scandinavia it will probably be the same as it was before Sweden joined EU and Norway EEA if you just have a UK passport the employer would have to prove that there was a need to bring someone in from UK. Worked in both Sweden and Norway pre 1990s and didn’t find it difficult to get seasonal work with a landscape company in Norway but it was more difficult/took longer as a climber in Sweden. Don’t know what the situation would be with a family except accommodation would be more difficult than if single. I have dual nationality now. Never worked in Germany but expect it will be the same. Just write to a number of companies and see what the situation is and take it from there.
  6. Not aware of an American Easternmade dealership in UK. The more powerful/faster professional towable horizontal splitters (26-31T splitting power) with 2-4 & 6 six way knives that lift logs onto tables like Eastermade splitters here in UK won't have petrol or diesel engines like Eastermade, they will work off the tractor, there are however vertical road tow splitter that have petrol and diesel engines but these tend to come with single splitting knives and are not as powerful but some have 13-17T splitting power and more and some are relatively fast. It's important to have good dealership backup like with Fuelwood Warwick which are based in Warwick which also have dealers in North & South Scotland, NE England and SE England. Have a look at the range of AMR (French) splitters which Fuelwood Warwick stock, there's also Posch (Austrian) and Krpan splitters which Jas P Wilson are dealers for (Dumfries) but AMR will be cheaper and backup has been better with Fuelwood Warwick in the past in my experience although Posch and Krpan do make good professional splitters. Both Fuelwood Warwick and Jas P Wilson have open days from time to time and will arrange demos at other times if given notice.
  7. Bought a similar small parcel of larch standing last December and paid £20/m3 standing, would be prepared to offer up to £23/m3 standing this year but not more.
  8. If a straight forward application for thinning only and not a felling it does not go on Public Register for planting and felling so will depend on how quickly an officer can deal with it, probably <6 weeks (England).
  9. I'm on my third pair of Haix Trekker Mountain boot. Trekker Mountain 2 is a Class 1 rugged waterproof/Gore-Tex forestry boot. List price £229 + VAT but available at £207 including VAT and if mentioned or personal use would be £172.50 as VAT exempt. Best to try them on if possible, I order usual boot size, wear various thickness of socks and modify sizing with two different thickness of Haix insoles. They take a bit of breaking in so best to starting wearing them before old boots wear out. They are a bit heavier than some other boots but that will be down to the thickness of leather and rugged construction in general. The boot can be resoled, laces might wear out but only cost £4.50. I climb in them sometimes but don't climb much these days and are mainly used for ground work. The Protector Light 2.1 is a class 2 lighter boot but not as rugged as Trekker Mountain 2 boot and seems to be designed for light work/sitting in a machine most of the time, weight per boot 995g compared to 1265g with leather not a thick and generally not as robust.
  10. Lodgepole pine felled, split and stacked outside in Feb and March of this year well below <20% moisture content now. Logs stacked off the ground on pallets or 4” x 4” x 8’ sawn posts with tarp covering top of stacks with slight overlap, max dia of logs 15cm and lengths 50cm - 1m, before autumn ready to burn wood goes into sheds. Use crates as well to season 20cm, 25cm logs as well as random pieces with top of of crates covered.
  11. For load in that L200 delivered locally try: £44 lower grade firewood/mixed rings & pieces £66 good quality hardwood rings 20-30cm dia 22-25cm long
  12. L200 Series 4 (2006 - 2015) towing capacity braked trailer is 2.7t and Series 5 3.1t (3.5t is possible with 3 axle braked trailer not with 1 or 2 axle trailers), the engine sizes are about the same and not much difference in curb weight. I regularly tow 2T with another 0.5T in pickup with no problem but if towing 3.5T then something like the current Toyota Hilux or Ford Ranger would be the thing to have I would have thought.
  13. Had a 2010 reg for a good few years and sold it at around 80k as well as a 2018 reg and both reliable vehicles. Use pickup quite a lot off-road and found the smaller size and advantage at times. On towing it depends what you need to tow.
  14. As I understand it you first open a dispute in Resolution Centre of PayPal account (within 180 days) and if you do not get a result with seller you escalate the dispute into a claim but must wait 7 days from payment date to escalate a dispute for items not received and must escalate dispute into a claim within 20 days. If that does not work if PayPal was funded via a card then contact the card issuer. Credit cards are covered under section 75 where credit card providers are jointly liable if something goes wrong (protection £100 - £30,000 per claim on credit card under Consumer Credit Act). For debit card payments there's chargeback (it might be called something else with some network) within 120 days is covered by law and and applies to all debit cards but rules differ between networks.
  15. When you do not receive an item from seller PayPAL protection covers reimbursement of full purchase price of item as well as original cost of shipping if paid. Time to file a dispute is 180 days from the date of purchase.
  16. That 22T Venom is painfully slow, you would struggle to make a living with that machine, it is useful for busting up difficult to split/larger rings into more manageable pieces, not much if anything that machine will not split though. As you say you’ve got to start somewhere and will depend on your budget but try and avoid purchasing a machine which as you do more firewood is not up to expectations. They will demonstrate machines at Rock Machinery if contacted before a visit also they are likely to be at the Royal Highland Show, Edinburgh later this month. Best to have a good look about and see what various machines can do at dealers in the area, also you might consider hire if anything decent available for hire. Those American Easternmade machines will likely be relatively expensive and not sure about dealership in UK but I think there is one now.
  17. Going rate for softwood logs in your area probably about £110/m3 loose local delivery or £70/m3 for 2-3m3 loose trailer loads. If you were to sell trailer loads of unseasoned firewood straight from the wood then you wouldn't need to rent a yard. Most customers don't know the different between larch, pine and spruce unless you tell them and so simpler to sell it all at the same price. Of the machines you area considering neither the Rock Machinery 12T Venom or the 20T dual split are road tow machines, they are designed for moving around the yard so you would have to transport them to site in a trailer but the 20T machine might be a bit heavy to manhandle onto a trailer (the 12T you would get into some vans). The more expensive 22T Venom is a road tow machine with a recommended max speed of 45mph, so fine on the back roads but on a main road expect traffic to build up behind you. The rock Venom log splitters are all a bit on the slow side and single split machines, of the three machines the dual split will be a few seconds faster. The 22T Venom splits both horizontal and vertically so an advantage when it comes to logs that are too heavy to lift. Most customers I find want seasoned hardwood or wood that will season from about April/May to October although some prefer a mix of hardwood/softwood, 1/3 softwood 2/3 hardwood works well as does a 50/50 mix.
  18. As you say ‘normally’ the haulage company is a separate enterprise but not always and have encountered problems with timber merchant with owner timber lorries taking timber away undocumented until challenged.
  19. Correct - Green density Vol/Wt Ratio m3/tonne Ash 1.28 (ref. Forestry Commission Mensuration Handbook) 1m3 therefore 0.781 tonne.
  20. I have had in the past a few loads removed not documented from standing sales sold on an out-turn basis (weight sales), but had fortunately recorded lorry reg number, time, date and produced lifted and so changed timber buyer and got paid for those loads. Had a load rejected also so drove 2 hrs to check only to find the timber was not from our site (was a different species of tree to that sold), challenged buyer and got paid. It has not happened to me but know of loads skimmed on way to mill (timber transferred from one lorry to another). Have had a cutter fell good timber that wasn't included in a standing sale - complained and cutter removed from site. Most of the time no problem but contracts need to be properly supervised.
  21. Grey squirrel damage, the bark has been stripped further down the stem and top died off, they often sit in a crotch and strip bark above the crotch, on large mature trees I’ve noticed that they strip bark sometimes on top side of large branches such as beech which is not obvious from the ground and only when climbing in the tree.
  22. One of their favourite trees to bark strip if it will support their weight.
  23. Could it be grey squirrels?
  24. Pollard in dormant season which probably would be better in two phases if going for the lower cut indicated and maintain as a pollard.
