Chris - was it you that did the demo for me at Wetherby? As you can see I went ahead and bought it and its great - especially the log lift!!!! Rob - it takes up to 15", that's the main reason I went for the Farmi, the Japa only did 12". It does cope ok with the odd bend, you just have to be patient with it. It's petrol powdered, though I would have prefered another diesel, but they don't do one. Its road towable which really make the difference for me because I go out on hire with it for other firewood merchants. The photos are from a job last week, we did about 12 ton in 8 hours. It works great on saw logs and you can put about 8 foot straight in with no trouble.

I have a Farmi processor, used to have a Japa 300 and upgraded last year. This is what it does in a day.

back to the main question i sell logs all year round and make a profit on them its not a side line its a part of my bussines

if your working out of your normal area is it not better to give the logs away that pay to get rid of it thats my point

why only the ones you have to pay for i give a free tip for logs

I've had a call today from a gentleman wanting some milling done in Pontefract. Its not economical for him to use me as I'm too far away. There are about 7 trees in total I think, all to be milled into planks. If anyone is near Pontefract and interested in the work please send me a PM and I'll pass on his details.

I started with absolutely nothing, just a pickup that I had already. I don't like debt and still don't have any. Everything I've got I just built up over time and added equipment as I could afford it. Check out the one man band thread, there are a lot of people on there doing fine who started with very little.

I'm 43, well on the way to being a pensioner in this line of work. I work on my own, and do smaller jobs without any help. I hire in a team of lads for larger jobs from a friend that runs another local tree company. They have all the big toys, lots of young daft lads that like running up and down trees all day and are really good at their jobs. I just stand on the ground, feed the chipper, watch, and take my share at the end - much better. It means I don't have to invest in lots of expensive kit, pay wages when there's no work or worry about keeping people busy all day. Had a business partner, would never go there again. Karlos, the wear and tear will come quickly!

Northumberland Firewood Fair, Oct 16th 2011 Northwoods has been successful in getting funding from the Northumberland Upland Leader programme, to run a firewood fair in Northumberland. For those of you who are unaware of what a firewood fair is, a quick description would be; Firewood Fair description - Similar to a country show, with the main focus being that of an auction of firewood and firewood grade roundwood to the general public and trade. An outdoor site is used, with a few marquees for trade and information stands, where the individual lots of firewood (and firewood grade roundwood) are displayed in dumpy bags, trailers, netted bags, bundles, billets etc during the morning to be viewed by members of the public. Suppliers can put a reserve on any lots as they see fit, have the option of just bringing along an example load and then auctioning more lots which would then be delivered to the customer after the event and can include delivery in the price. The Auction is then run by a professional auction house. After the auction the successful buyers have the option of either; Taking the firewood home in their own vehicle (loaders will be available on site to help with this) Arranging for it to be delivered by the supplier (if that was included in the sale option) Arrange at extra cost for delivery by a 3rd party at the event (we are hoping to have the Young Farmers provide this service) The event also will have trade stands for firewood suppliers, firewood machinery dealers, woodland management services, stove retailers etc. We will also use this event as a means to “educate” firewood customers about such issues as; The sustainability and environmental credentials of UK firewood The importance of burning dry wood Promotion of softwood as a good quality firewood option (for stove users) Last year we went along to a similar event in Lincolnshire The Lincolnshire Firewood Fair 2011. Revesby Estate, Lincolnshire., which sold nearly £9,000 worth of firewood and had about 2,000 people attend. We produced a quick summary report on our visit which is attached as a PDF. We have taken on a professional PR company to promote the event to the whole of Northumberland and the wider region, via newspapers, posters and other media. The fair is not only an opportunity to sell firewood, but should be seen as a chance to promote your business and increase your customer base. At this stage we are firming up details, and as such are looking to get an idea of the level of interest so we can firm up final costs of marquees and logistics, so you are not committed to a booking by completing any registration form, but we do need to firm up numbers to make sure the event is financially viable (even though it is part funded it still needs to have some private sector contribution to break even). We haven't finalised details for the auction but it is proposed that the auctioneers will charge a 10% fee to the buyer, therefore seller should not have to pay anything, However, this may change as things are confirmed with the auctioneers. For trade stands we are proposing to charge £125 for a 2m space in the marquee and £125 for an (almost) unlimited space outside. However this may reduce if interest or sponsorship is high enough.
