Yep i’v noticed it’s rare to find good people that’s why I stopped using a big team, it was the same time internet came in. Coincidence ! farm lads are the best, that’s where I came from. If your climbing, ground delays are frustrating and to watch a slow climber is like burning 20 pound notes. Do you ever find trees split open with lightning strike ! i’v seen that a dozen times.

All of that, the overall satisfaction makes it all worthwhile. I only wish I could do it all again ! As I got past my best it was a concern, as to what lay ahead. you need not worry! We look after nature, nature looks after us. Being full time,by Friday the fatigue would kick in (you’l know that one) and my general agility reduced. but you know sometimes i’d climbe tree next to tree with people half my age they loved it, I loved it ! The banter was great, they learned from me. And I found that my skill more than compensated for lack of agility! We’d debate who was best! I told them If your still alive when ya my age ! then you’l be as good. Would you ever take up teaching ? To say your gifted is an under statement! what we do is sereous shit your a sereous bloke.

Always good to practice what we pleach ! Grafting, growing named fruit trees to sell at markets would be very enjoyable. Just think of the networking that could be done over a market stall !

Thanks Arob lots of good info there! It’s really heartening to know there’s people out there tredding the same path and for the same reasons. At the tail end of my working life it’s important to me to pass on my skills. And very satisfying! Must have had about 100 people come along for the day long workshops. I love the thought of all the trees they will be confidently pruning. on any one day we can have farmers wanting info on cider orchard manigment, small garden groups/orchards or bush, espelier ect always good fun. We do have a few good venues but would love a permanent base complete with lots of trees. We’re trying to arrive at a fair price for the day, so as to plough a lot back in, to make the project grow !

Thanks for that Reg that’s exactly the kind of detailed reply I was really really hopeing for. Brings it all back to me ! I’m with you on every word. I’m interested in the psychology of what we do as you say it’s all about that. plus workout the odds of it all to ensure we win. I had similar pressures ! For a good few years, I had a ten man team we generated a lot of work, but i’d do the tricky’st. We just dig deep ! There’s a lot of sereous stuff I’d love to compare on. But it’s late now. tomorows another day. Thanks.

I wonder if I could of done those 200 foot trees, i’ll never know ! Was it much of a shock ? I certainly had an apitite for 140 ! We kind of peak at some stage. As long as you enjoy it, and enjoy haveing the skill to do it ! I gave up the big ones at 64. but am wondering if it’s just a dinner- break !

Hi ya nepia thanks for your reply ! sounds like we got England covered then ha ha shame your both not nearer though,we could of maybe organised things. I’v been doing some fruit tree pruning workshops for several years now ! Last year we did our first grafting workshop ! Big success! It is indeed easyer than it look’s, safety is the key with sharp knifes, aiming to do more in future. I’d love to follow both your adventures ?

I’d love to hear more detail’s from you both, about your fruit tree pruning, and also what part of the country you both work ! I love working on fruit tree, and think it’s a much needed skill !
  10. I’m in the bath area i’ll be keeping my eyes and ears open for it. Dirty little scrot’s
  11. Well I think I solved the problem put to us all by Johnsound ! But I would say, if you and your college have to ask advice here ! You should defiantly not be taking the job on. Leave it to someone with the experience to do it. We here, often see amateur’s/ beginners take on a big tree way out of there skill range, almost alway’s ends badly for all concerned. But there I solved it for you ! A thank you would be nice at this stage. And may I just ask- Are you ‘old money’ or ‘new money’ ?
  12. How many of the piles are ther to pull out ?
  13. I’m thinking what would I do in this situation! between you, you need to make the decision. One way or other and make it happen. meenwhile I would be out getting some work. Print tree work cards, get them out in shop windows. Organise branch removal (legit) maybe something on internet ect ect. Avoid doing cheap work !that won’t help. You both will look back with pride at how you came through this.
  14. You may have read it that way ! I can assure you I did’nt post it with politics in mind. Internet mis-understanding.
  15. It was just a harmless bit of humour I added as an edit, demonsrating the power of a water jet. Any political connection is a product of your imagination. Good luck

    The BIG C .

    Sorry Stubby keep strong.
  17. I would have thought blasting out the silt/mud around the pile with high pressure hose’s would be the quickest, easiest, safest and cheapest option ! If you could get down a good way. Timber scissor tongs and a good winch would do the rest, you’d then be gripping sound solid wood. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=boris+johnson’s+water+cannon&prmd=sinv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiNiNaTr6_gAhWisXEKHatDDBIQ_AUoAnoECAwQAg&biw=320&bih=438#imgrc=oMEPN0SWGXnzGM:

Reg that’s an absalutly stunning vid ! That needs a wider audience. It would go viral. I’v been a climber all my working life. And all ways had a kind of top ten climbers who were my hero’s. Your there at number one having seen ya skills. I’d love to compare views one day ? We’re a breed apart.
  21. And to add to Mark Bolams comment and tying directly to the original topic here !! After 50 years on trees, looking back, sometimes I was well off , sometimes not. So - - - >> It’s the jobs we walk away from that will make us rich<< And the same applies to staying alive ha ha ! Me ? 65, 3 day’s ago against all odds.
  22. Thanks Mark ! It’s a good’n, no copyright. It’s yours. It can be adapted to use when quoting a job, and our instinct tells us ‘he’s one of those types’ they question the price, and ask how long it will take. with good humour slip the joke in right ther, gets a good laugh an makes the point. As you will know Mark, quoting for work is all about good good communication! My advice to people starting out is. Get it all sown up so there is no room for deliberate Miss-understanding. On paper even better. Totaly agree with you, some rich people are really nice. If I were to generalise I like ‘old money’ but watch out for the ‘new money’ rich people !
  23. I quoted a good size take down for fair price. With the right kit, my skill and a few nifty tricks we were cleaning up by dinner time. Same thing rich chap turned up, looking all indignant and hard done by, he said ‘’but that only took you 4 hours!’’ I said no sir that’s taken me 30 years! Long long pause, hurph stomped off. Long wait for payment.
  24. Have you got any tree work tools ect ?
