  1. openspaceman is there more fruit trees near by to cross pollinate that one ? That would explain lack of fruit ! some need two different variety’s near (Triploid) ! to pollinate, they need to also be in flower the same time. The brown rot is easy to fix as I stated! the canker can be got under control through health and opening up the canopy. If you like I could talk you through pruning it on here in a couple of weeks time. Other people would pick up a few food tips too! Love your apple tree and don’t cut it down !!
  2. Peasgood thanks for that info some of that is correct some not. My favourites are garden/hygiene to break the breeding cycle, encouraging garden birds, the amount of pests a pair of feeding parent birds can deal with is huge! plus keeping your tree strong and healthy by pruning ! Like us humans it’s when we’re weak we fall prey to illness. A moribund tree will fall prey to pests and diseases! regarding bees v nicatenoids don’t forget bees will travel miles to good source crops and down wind of arable crops will be contaminated ! bees to! restrictions have been put in place ! But it’s a proven fact bee colony calapse is a sereous issue! Most of our fruit and veg are dependent on bees pollination! wild or honey ? bee !!
  3. Thanks honestly ! That’s right on que there’s a thousand people out there think the same ! That’s what I’d love to overcome. But if you think about it ! It’s a smaller version of the same equation we face with any tree job, hedges forestry big estate work. The price has to be realistic to get the job + we have to pay our bills and have carrot on the end of the stick—? as stated way above , the best fruit tree pruning is little and often! To try and catch up with let’s say ten years neglect in one visit would leave the customers unhappy with the price as you state ! To catch up with 10 years neglect on one go would leave the tree heavily pruned with excess vigour putting the removed branches back with water shoots! And you cussing and reluctant to take similar jobs on! I hope to convince us that it’s worth while for all three party’s no rush. Now I’v got to admit i’m a bit tired right now (been at this since 8am out of the blue. But hope to keep this one rolling. Good night all and thanks ??

  5. The subject of bees and orchards is big ! and could rubble on for months ! I hope it does! I’m up for it. But in the interest of keeping this interesting, I want to change the subject ! I’l be blunt ! Is there money to be made in fruit tree pruning ? I want to interest the young’uns! learning a new career, young new tree teams. And pull in some of the high climbing big boys ! Let’s get back to bees, let’s talk money! If it pays we can earn a living doing what we love, agreed ?

  8. Dam i’m on the run now !!! ??????
  9. Just to add to my above !! I smell ‘ nicateenoid cover up’ on that one. on a different topic being new on here, i’d like to apologise for my spelling !! It’s less than perfect I know ! kept me out of doing an office job ! and thank god for that !
  10. Regarding pollination of orchards by honey bees! I had heard that too ! But ok i’ll stick my neck out here and call it tosh. When you consider bee keeping is a massive industry in parts of the world ! In the USA they fill an entire goods train up with commercial hives ,following the season of blossom, So I’m calling this one there wrong! I could go on and on. Bare in mind we live in a world of bogus research funded by self interested climate change denyers ! Funded by chem and oil company’s !
  11. Paul in the woods, thank’s for the input, am shocked but not surprised if that is true ! those boffins ! first eggs are good then they say bad, same with eating potatoes. Cooking oil ! Wine !! I remember we all had to paint all our tree cuts with bitumen paint ! or we were classed as cowboys ! you’d walk under the tree and it would drip of the cuts into your hair! Then Arthur Sligo did research and said no it’s detramental to the healing of the cut ! I’ll look Into that one and mend my ways. But thanks. So what about the flight less one of the two sex’s was that wrong all a long, ? but must say I will be enjoying some good healthy debates here! If you get three tree men ! you get four different answers ! I love that.
  12. Trigger yep ya right ! They had hot houses top. Before the days of deep freezers and supermarkets the gardeners would stretch the growing seasons like that. They were so good they could have fresh melon or the table Christmas Day ! home grown!
  13. My advice regarding bee’s is yes def get’um ha ha. As an interesting bit of research google ‘bee keeping top boxes‘ you’l be fascinated! I’ll say no more!
  14. Thanks Conor regarding codlin moth one or other of the sex’s is flight less, drops to ground level in the fruit as maggots, boy or girl one has to climb the trunk (hey jus like us tree men) to meet an make a family ! gets stuck on grease band! Job done. Keep the band there all year round and grease topped up and fresh.
  15. Open space man that’s a big question there I could go on and on! I’l do some points and no doubt add more later ! brown rot— can be delt with by—garden hygiene! Take up fallen fruit/ leafs this breaks the annual cycle of the decease dispose of by burning or bin men not on compo heap. Codlin moth can be delt with by grease bands, winter tar oil wash (will discoulour any greenery under tree) or bio traps hung in tree. Thining out the tree helps prevent an unhealthy micro climate for a healthy tree.
  16. Thanks for those kind word tree-fancier ! Phew I got a truck load of story’s ! I ‘m hopeing to be around a good while in the future or until people get fed up with me ! Photos are a sore point recently I lost my last 2 year’s worth swopping my iPhone over. I don’t poses a computer, but yes i’ll russel up some pics from the good ole days give me a month or 2! watch this space. But wow ther is some better pics/vids here .
  17. That variety of cherry will do well any where but is a great way to solve the darkest part of the gdn, cherry’s look best fan trained (stunning) plus consider peach, nectarine grapes, figs. All those benefit from reflected heat off the wall.
  18. Wow Steve ! That looks like a clean sheet for planting up. Yep you could put espeliar fruit against those walls, you could get more varieties in by planting cordons along 45% angle including pear’s. Check your sun light direction ! If you’v got a shady wall—- morello cherry would do well. Growing fruit up and slightly above those walls, will soften the hard ‘look’ and lines of the walls! Then bird box’s that’l sort out your fruit tree pests ect. Paradise and still room to kick a football about ! Reminds me about 30 years ago my team did all the trees in a big manor house garden I was off estimateing. Day later I rang the people up to check they were happy! Yes they were but the team had left a rugby ball on the roof ! Would we like to collect it. No comment !
  19. Conor it’s best to get quality stock as near to home as poss ! This is what we call indigenous ( more adapted to your local climate) that’s best. Use google and chat on phone first.
  20. Tree-fancier this look’n good thanks for that ! we mentioned thinning out water shoots! Don’t forget to leave a 2-3 inch stub on those cuts this encourages the formation of new fruit Spurs / buds.
  21. Conor my fav is wild garlic ! add it to most meals and it’s pure essence of woodland!
  22. Tree fancier! Thanks for that link, it just shows what can be done, now’s a good moment to put my cards on the table having done the big trees in my life, and slowing down now ! This fruit thing is keeping me going. I do fruit tree pruning workshops plus ocasonaly ditto grafting! Plus private trees / orchards and a couple of big big cider orchards. Absolutely love it!
  23. Conor you’v got a lovely project going there ! To add to your list ... edable wild plants ! I’v got a friend who pretty much lives on them, best eating I ever tasted ! She won’t touch tap water just spring, she’s got ten times more energy than me. Spend hardly any money on shopping! Sounds good to me.
  24. Trigger you could thin out some of that new 2year growth, that lets light in down below the main canopy, too many trees have a ‘thatch on top, shading and killing lower fruit buds. There’s a couple of good tests—— you should be able to throw a tennis ball through the tree, or a black bird should be able to fly through it ! The one I like is—- you should be able to grab ya mate! and shove his head and shoulders into the tree! I’m from Somerset we’re a bit odd like that !!!
  25. Thanks Steve ! I’v jumped in at the deep end here ! but it’s very worthwhile, good luck with the move. take it steady moving’s a stressful time, eny fruit trees there? If not pop some in !
