  1. I was happy to defend the tree surgeons up to the watering story. We don't know what they charged, maybe it was two grand for a 200 tree? Could still be cowboys....
  2. I wouldn't change it, I think those brass bars might be intended to support it but they will be much less stiff than the step so would bend under it if you turned the grain. To my mind the grain is the right way in that step.
  3. Got a horse chestnut to do Saturday on the village green, reckon I'll leave the logs in a pile for a day or two and hope they vanish.
  4. Brampton Valley Training in Towcester, give them a call. They used to publish course timetable on website but have to ring up now and ask, but they do fairly regular UA courses (amongst usual others)
  5. I've got a leylandii to do soon but they aren't clueless tightarses, they are very nice people who have come up from London in lockdown, and have cash to spend on sorting things out. Also did a laurel recently for a rich widow, again cash to spend sorting things out so we ended up trimming all the other hedges as well. I think these hedges are only really really bad if you've underestimated them timewise, pretty bad if someone else underestimated, not bad at all if you've got plenty of money on it and no rush. I'll maybe have changed my mind in a couple of weeks of course, after doing the next one....
  6. I don't think they need sunlight, they're not photosynthetic as they get energy from the diesel.
  7. Makita bought out Fuji Robin so they have pedigree, I'm happy with mine which I would say are mid range.
  8. Fair enough, just had a run of cherries which have upped and died and look like hatstands in the front garden - I guess I don't notice the ones which have come back nicely.
  9. Looks like a pair of steps to me, difficult to spot anything wrong.
  10. I visited a customer today, old lady who has hundreds and hundreds of wasps around her small willow tree. On close examination I found it was infested with huge dark coloured aphids so I'm thinking the wasps are eating the sap (honeydew). They are in the tree and all over the ground under it. She has a bad reaction to wasps so is pretty distraught, and can't sit in the garden. Now, she wants me to get rid of the tree to get rid of the wasps and get her garden back. It's not a big willow, maybe 10 feet tall and so nobody is really going to miss it, but my question is there another way to get rid of the wasps and/or aphids? Otherwise it's chipper at dawn before the wasps get warmed up....
  11. My 2p worth 1.Short 2.Velcro, doesn't need to be tight just snug so adjustment is good. 3.Buckle, good and tight so positive pin in hole Of course everyone has their own idea.
  12. Me too but interesting read, seems HVO not susceptible to diesel bug so could be a good alternative for a lot of intermittently used plant.
  13. Might as well finish the job mate, likely to die and if not the it will sprout horribly and fast back to the same size.
  14. Can't afford him.
  15. I usually end up climbing in to those hedges with silky, baby Makita topper or MS150T, you might not need the ladder at all.
  16. Definitely suggest distal, other idea to try could be schwabisch prussic.
  17. Exactly, dead birch is soft mush usually.
  18. Depends on the chipper too, timberwolf blade angle is about 60 degrees so it's strong, on my gravity chipper the edge is much thinner. I've smashed blades on dead elm, so never chip it now.
  19. Depends on the wood, I always say beech is used for chopping blocks so you wouldn't want to put hard 6 inch beech in a 6 inch chipper. Much better to log it and take it home. Half rotten lime from deadwooding, chip fine except as said can shatter.
  20. Bigger bend radius I guess....
  21. The training centre had a range of different spikes to try when I did my CS38, I hated the Treehogs from the moment I put them on and I don't think anyone else liked them much either so your answer might be nearly anything else. Its also not a one size fits all - I have the Stein X2 which are designed to suit taller climbers, super comfy for me but I know other people find them terrible.
  22. Keep going, won't the ashpan fill up?
  23. Surely if you have a grate and want to burn wood then just stop emptying it, let the ash build up over the grate? Ash melts down much much smaller, there's no need to keep taking the fluffy ash out. I only empty ours every few weeks and that's burning every evening.
  24. Or Predator 460? I'm a big fan of it pushing itself, it's a lot bigger though with the battery box and everything.
  25. It is likely to be ash bark beetle, have a careful look and see if it's holes in the bark but not from the ends of the logs. This is very common and because it's not in the wood itself not a problem at all.
