  1. I have recently had one recoil cover stud snap on my 2020 560, carried on using it on 3 studs for a few days until replacement obtained, but then a second has gone in that space of time. I don't recall the saw getting a whack from anything and i've not had this previously - has anone had a similar issue and had much success with drilling out the snapped ends and retapping.
  2. I usually do my own tax returns but occasionally get stumped with certain issues. I've recently bought a replacement pick up (I'm in the woods so we are only talking 3 grand for this), and given the truck's main use is for business purpose how much of that sum can count as capital investment?
  3. Further to prior posts on hurley sticks, I'm surprised a few of the Irish blokes who have contacted me in the past have not clocked this thread - by all accounts they must be now getting a bit desperate as stocks must have been hit hard? There has to be some potential customers on Wooodlots. Quite what they are going to make the sticks from when the ash has all gone, I'm unsure. Lets hope they can get some new resistant strains of ash on the go so we don't lose all of them, a complete tragedy for the UK landscape
  4. Jim possibly try calling Dave at Treeworld (North Kent), don't have his number to hand but he is on google
  5. I made a recent post about how useful the Woodchuck pickaroon from the US is, only problem with tongs is constant bending over - if you want to save your spine that tool is worth buying. Digs in well and doesn't appear to blunt, mine certainly didn't break, despite being made of alloy. Must buy another, mine went missing
  6. Late winter / early spring fires do not surprise me at all - in recent years a fairly brief spell of dry, warm and windy weather as early as March have caused burning embers from chestnut brash fires to carry to leaf-laden coppice stools nearby, and before you know it a few minutes lack of attention lead to a lot of frantic foot stamping to put the damage out
  7. Confusingly, the 2020 model does look completely different from the previous - if that's not a MK2 its certainly improved. Check Oakley's garden machinery for that saw, you'll see its the same saw body design with partial metal casing (as opposed to all plastic as before) as the newer 545. There are a few other companies that stock it too. I guess MK2 refers only to engine changes.
  8. I have both the 560 and 555, and prefer the latter. Smoother torquey power delivery, less screaming revs
  9. Thinking of buying a back up 555, looked at one website Lawnmowers directand either there is a MK2 available now that I wasn't aware of or the image is a 545 Mk2 - I can't see the model number clearly on the site so can someone confirm is there now a MK2, or not?
  10. I've been using Husqvarna Technical strides in one guise or other (Hi vis 20A at the mo)for about 5 years and they last fairly well, are comfy / good fit and generally a sensible choice
  11. Al you could try Chris at Acacia Tree care on 07812344740
  12. Its probably fair to say you must have a substantial business with quite a turnover if you are paying ten grand. Is that a typo? I'm a one man band forester
  13. My insurance is up for renewal, stripped to basics coppicing / small felling with 1 million public liability - the broker has just said that that their prior prices cano no longer be even remotely matched and up goes the premium by just over 100 to just over 400. This probably is still reasonable, but is anyone paying much less?
  14. The only post I've made that could in any way be seen as a whinge is to ask why 100 mill plus of public money has been thrown at a project, to then be abandoned a few months later. Is that moaning, or constructive criticism? This lot at no. 10 are quick to point out that we have to behave in the way that they dictate, and then make a complete balls of things themselves. If I ask my partner's young grandaughter about all this, she has more sense than most of this lot
  15. I was wrong in fact, this has been reported in the Telegraph and Mirror also
  16. I get your gist Steve, a lot in the papers is nonsense but on an issue like this I don't actually believe that they wouldn't get pulled up on outright lies.
  17. In the Daily Mail today.... further to the already haphazard approach to dealing with Covid we are being told that the Nightingale hospitals (note that's plural, not just one) are being "quietly dismantled" due to staff shortages. So, we have ovverun general hospitals apparently but despite considerable investment setting the aforementioned up, we now take them down. I no longer believe one word of the crackpot rhetoric that the government spins out on a daily basis, as none of it makes any sense
  18. Ditto, all of you have a great one
  19. I will enquire about 25 litre drums. Masks aren't exactly comfortable when working but more and more the idea of the type that at least block the particles from wood fires is food for thought
  20. Benzene is what I was thinking of other than ethanol, not great stuff to be breathing in all day admittedly. That said, I have met plenty of wood cutters who have made old age in reasonable nick so I guess genetics play a part
  21. Can we just clarify something here. I've used Aspen to a degree in forestry saws over the past few months and I'd love to say it has made my lungs and cough better, but frankly with brash fires constantly going (green wood smoke proven to be carcinogenic), there isn't any noticeable difference. I do care about my health by the way, but can't justify the extra daily cost on top of all other consumables - the margins in chestnut cutting are just too low. I also can't store pallets of the stuff where I am, so slighly stuffed in that respect. Is it primarily supposed to be the ethanol that is the most damaging in the emissions, or other chemicals; I'm wondering to what degree the higher octane / ethanol free pump fuel may at least be some improvement on what is inhaled? Maybe I just need a job shift before I keel over.
  22. No I can see that for chestnut post and rail you could only use it for the vertical slots (or use a very narrow tip bar for horizontals), so fair comment Dave. What you have there is probably a lot more suitable
