Chain brakes are essential. Don’t bother with that old dinosaw. You’ll be repairing it often. Most modern stihl saws will do what you need. Chat to your local dealer. Or ask on here for a second hander. [emoji106]

A. Rob.d who runs Chainsawbars.co.uk makes and sells the panther mills. B. The mill needs to fit the log. I have several mills, each for a certain size. My most used is the 60” panther with 54/56”? Bar. Gives a 42”/105cm wide cut. Over that it’s the 80” panther and 84” bar, cuts up to 6’ wide. But a big mill is hard to balance on a small log. [emoji106]

That’s bullshit. I tested the 881 for stihl in the uk. Milling up to 84” bars. The 881 is perfectly capable of pulling whatever you can put on it. Please message me the number of your dealer. [emoji106]

Again. All you are saying is it’s about the economics. Well there are ways and means to change that. With the right government legislation, grants, funding and foresight. Changing public awareness about their role as users of products. There are a great many in this country who care deeply about our forests and trees. It’ll take a long time and vast effort. All you mention here is the economics. That’s way too easy. Serving existing markets for cheap low grade timber. Changing the mind set, to change the end user/recipients choice. That’s the key. One day we will have IKEA offering hand made uk wood products. [emoji6][emoji106] -
As a miller, you’d only be looking at £50-£100 for the trunk, IF it’s not hollow, or covered in nails.

The cutting speed when milling is almost irrelevant. Moving slabs is the slow bit. [emoji106]
