  1. Have you tried the search function? There is a lot of good info covering this subject on this sub-forum, a lot of discussions within the last few months too so should be easy to look back and review.
  2. Careful what advice you take. Im not 100% sure you can just waltz up and start climbing peoples tree's.
  3. Did you really just cover your costs milling Sleepers? Yeh, Firewood really does seem the way to go. Process into dumpy bags and flog for £60-100. Im planning on buying a processor as soon as I have the cash.
  4. Yeh he is. But also worth keeping sweet. He'll deliver me his Teli-Handler for the Weekend, Friday night till Monday morning for £60. I pay £60 a month to rent for the workshop space that I've just put a Ramp in and hopefully will be buying some land off of him in the future. But regardless of that I think 3 x 1000mm wide Slabs 50mm thick and 3-4m long for a days work is ok. Considering what they can sell for when dried. I cherry pick to, so make sure I get the 1/4 sawn middle boards too. Or at least half of them.
  5. There is not really a properly dedicated forum to woodworking here, but I think its in the pipeline. https://arbtalk.co.uk/forums/forum/75-woodcraft-forum/ Thats the forum Ive posted some of the things Ive made with the Slabs I've milled. Not sure posting there will get you any beter results than posting here to be honest? Have you tried facebay? I see a lot of people round my way advertising slabs, seems like Milling is a popular hobby these days. You might find something that suits for the budget you have? Beech is not as boring a wood as people seem to think and is at the cheaper end of the market. A Nice Spalted Slab of Beech can look amazing. I made this Rocking Horse out of a Beech Tree I milled a few years ago.
  6. Yeh, afraid so. For almost everyone here this is their livelyhood. So its like asking for an Electrician to come and do a top rate job in your house but telling them you're only willing to pay them an apprentice rate. I'm sure you'd appreciate how that would end up. Buying Green is an option, or as you like to mess around with projects you could invest £1-2000 and buy your own milling equipment and have an endless supply of wood. That you could sell on inexpensively.
  7. I do big Oak stems for 50% of the Slabs. But then Im getting the use of the Teli-Handler to move everything around. He also provides the Fuel and Oil.
  8. Exactly! Or sell him a green Slab for £200 and he can do all of the above himself in 3 years time. Thats if the Slab has not warped beyond use. I can sell him an Air Dried Slab of Beech or Oak for £500 plus shipping.
  9. Morning and welcome to the forum. If you're planning on making more projects with wood then there is a sub-forum on here where you can ask questions and post up your projects. Always nice to see what people are doing. You're asking for an inexpensive slab yet are listing all the qualities that would make the slab expensive. You're asking for a defect free Slab, so thats a price increase. You're asking for an Air Dried or Kiln Dried Slab, so thats a price increase. You're asking for the Slab to be ready for a quick sand then finish, that could be a lot of work due to how a slab reacts to drying, ie cupping, cracking etc so again a price increase. Keep in mind that there is a significant price difference between the wood species you've listed. You're definitely on the right forum though and Im sure someone can help you out.
  10. Ok cheers. Cheap and hassle free heating at 22p a liter really. It was the 1.18 liter per day comment that threw me. Ive got a few tons of wood that will need processing at some point in the future. Do you notice much of a difference in weight letting them sit to dry out? How long do you leave them before processing?
  11. Out of interest have you calculated how much oil you burn for the 20-30 minutes it takes to heat the hot water cylinder? I have a 2500l Oil Tank and Im considering picking up another 1000l oil tank to sit beside it as oil is so cheap just now.
  12. But instead you just wrote two posts of gobbledygook. Guess that backfired somewhat?
  13. I still dont know what you're trying to say. That there is enough papers out there to back up anyone's preferred point of view?
  14. Im sure there is enough papers on there to back-up whatever confirmation bias we have.
  15. That means nothing. Just typical hippy nonsense.
  16. Any credible links to this info? Ive seen a lot of sensationalism in the Medea.
  17. Admitadly its just from the news outlets but going by what they class as healthy, fit and no underlying health issues I have my reservations. I doubt the NHS is bothering with a proper autopsy to see if there was any real underlying health issues with these 'healthy and fit' people. The stats are still very clear on the matter. The chances of someone under 40 dying from Covid-19 is quite remote, this diminishes the younger the person gets. Of course there will always be the few exceptions that grab the headlines, thats why the percentages for the under 40's is not 0.00%. We seriously have to weigh up whats happening to the economy now, and in the future and the deaths that a huge crash will cause and the fact that of we allow those who are not at a statistically high risk to have the option of going back to work. If they dont want to take the risk then they need to follow the guidelines for over 60 year olds. Again, its a risk Im quite willing to take.
  18. I cant imagine its easy for you a all. But its quite worrying that you're in such close proximity to these vulnerable people when your wife is actually treating infected patients. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, if anyone is going to infect them it surely must be you? If there really is no one else to look after these older ones have you considered isolating yourself from your missus?
  19. But I'll assume that this assistance you're providing is done so following the correct procedures regarding social distancing, right?
  20. Who is caring for the over 60 year olds who should be properly isolating themselves?
  21. Damn, they are so cheap they are almost give away prices. Lovely moisture trap with all that bark.
