I find after a fresh sharpen I get nice clean chips fading to what you describe as Oatmeal as I move along the cut. of course that depends on the size of log and species etc. The Last log i did with an Alaskan maxed out my 48" Mill with a 48" Bar and 2/3 along I was back to oatmeal but still cutting fine. So I did one more pass then another light sharpen.
