  1. Great thanks, this one big so will be looking at getting rid of it on the day of removal should anyone be interested. It will be a crane dismantle so decent size sections.
  2. Hi All, Quick question is Wellingtonia a good wood for milling as I have a large one to remove?
  3. Slightly confused by the post. If I have understood you correctly you may be thinking about becoming a Arborist/Tree surgeon? Both are quite a different beast, all are educational! In my past life I also climbed and taught on rocks to a international level, can I climb trees and deal with heavy lumps of wood, nope! Its exhausting!! I would say the two skill sets (apart from minor rope knowledge) are completely different. Money wise I think the guys on here have been very generous with the amount of money its costs at grass levels to get involved within the industry. Taking into account training, equipment & basic set up I think you should forget 4-5 k. I would say go on some courses, link up with companies, learn and see how it goes.
  4. Due to my wife wanting a change of life, my family may have a chance to relocate to the general area of Brecon. I would therefore have to relocate my tree surgery business to this area. Wondering if any of you guys live in the general and wider area (Hereford, Hay on Wye etc) and if so could give me a feel of the market in terms of work load etc. Thanks.
  5. Alway go for a big hinge regardless, at least thats my method anyway, Under confident from Hitchin!!
  6. No dramas. I put on average 5ish applications in each month I would say give or take and over a fair few different councils but this is a first for me. Also I conduct work to others spec which also has been in %. Always learning!
  7. Hi All, I have had a refusal back from a local council tree officer. The reason stated was rather than me stating that I intended to reduce the trees canopy by 20% (which I have always used successfully in the past), I now need to express my intentions in metres. Whilst i feel this is a bit petty obviously I will resubmit as advised. Can I ask if you all use metres and also for those converts amongst you whats 20% = what in metres!!
  8. You cut trees, as we all do, you are amazing!
  9. Step back from it and email these guys they are very good and cheap also. Thomas Higgins Limited Registered Office Lloyds Chambers 19-21 Seaview Road Wallasey CH45 4TH
  10. Yep seems a lot but maybe its just the going rate? Is your campaign working?
  11. Does anyone one use Google Ad Words to target areas outside the reach their SEO area, if so how much is the monthly budget and any tips on targeting etc. I ask because I have just had a quote from a company saying I should spend 30 pounds per day on Ad Words and 595 plus VAT for a management fee of this process! Thats a lot of money to me and my business in relation to monthly income. Thanks
  12. Good thread thanks for the steer. Could I just ask is the 5.3 a middle of the road model, suitable perhaps for a smaller business model like mine?
  13. Thanks Mick I will take a look at it now.
  14. Hi Mick, Not planning on anything outside Arb at the moment. Standard residential & some small scale commercial type work currently. However looking to the future with business expansion in mind. All the decent wood from removals I keep as I run my home 90% from it and therefore I like to bring the cord back as big as possible to my yard for processing, hence a decent lift required. That enough info?
  15. Hi All, I am going to buy a loader to replace a old tractor I currently have, thinking Multi one. I want this for arb work, lifting heavy logs, trees etc. The problem I have had in the past is finding a decent log lifter for my tractor. I want something that can cope with heavy lifts, rough ground and will no deform the ends of the grapples etc. So one of the questions I have is does the multi one cope well and last? Not sure what series I would consider, will find out more about the cost this week however whats the minimum model, in your opinons that should be considered suitable for general arb work? Thanks
  16. So whats the general thoughts on Accreditation bringing more work? Do you have to seek the work still and if so does accreditation provide more options to view, have early warning of or understand where such contracts exist? I currently am unaware of where to search for such contracts/work. I have often thought of going down the AA/CHAS route but was unsure if it was really worth doing so to be honest.
  17. Thanks all I hear the good and not so good side! To answer your question Steve re advertising I have a SEO'd site (which rates highly when searched but only in my general area) and I use adverts in parish magazines, thats it. The next question really from me is how to increase the income or work? Should I be looking for commercial contracts, if so any advice on how to do/find this would be great.
  18. Its simple really. I have had my own business for 4 years now and its grown steadily over that time so I have no complaints. However I feel at this stage that I want to increase my business income etc. My situation is as follows, I have a great bunch of very good subcontractor climbers, groundies, stumpies & so on, all top notch. I have the equipment I need from day to day and if there is something I do not have, I have people in the trade who can assist. I mainly do residential work but I have had a few commercial jobs lately (by chance). I would be interested in your thoughts of how to grow my business and how you have grown yours. Any advice, tips and commercial experience would be greatly appreciated so thanks in advance for your time.
  19. Hi All, Is there anyone on here that provides a wood processing service in the Hertfordshire area. Basically my spitter is playing up so thinking of outsourcing rather than replacing etc. Please feel free to PM me. Thanks
  20. Basically I would say its the same as anything job in terms of Quals, they are simply just that. Retraining means starting again and as long as thats ok with you, then no issues. Yes you can go free lance straight away, just be up front with all those you approach. Offer your services to lots ( rather than just a few) different companies, you will soon workout the good ones, then learn from those and you should develop nicely, plenty do well in my experience, good luck with it all and regards to Jim at Kingswood if he's still there????
  21. Thanks all, having now done a bit of research and listening to you all its clear my accountant is not interested in helping me out and pointing me in the right direction etc. To be clear I am all for paying taxes, though I am also all for saving what I can, whilst increasing my business capability ( i.e. having a 4x4 for tough terrain). On that note is there such a thing as an arborist accountant, or could anyone recommend a good accountant please, who perhaps has some experience in our field? Thanks
