  1. So I spoke to the tree officer and got the go ahead to mulch the veteran oaks around our town. I remember reading some research from Glynn Percival about the benefits that different wood-chip had in different situations i.e fruit trees have high sugar content which the mulched tree can obtain, willow had healing properties and walnut had allopathic tendencies and was to be avoided as a mulch. Does anyone know what would be the best type of chip to use when mulching a veteran oak tree? What's the best method for doing so, I saw in David humphries photo he placed cardboard under the mulch I'm guessing this is to suppress the grass, and are the borders secured or just laid on the ground. Thanks for any advice.
  2. The video is blocked in the uk😩
  3. That looks really good! I'm going to try sell the idea of mulching our veteran trees to the tree officer.

  6. The jock will be drunk and barbaric after that awesome display against the French! Mon the Scotland!
  7. I postponed the pruning so I could assess the vigour of the crown when it is in full leaf. I think this will give me a better idea of where to prune back to.
  8. I think mulching is a great idea and have suggested it for many a tree. I generally get the response that it will be too messy as the mulch blow around if not maintained. Out of interest why would dogs be a problem?
  9. Haha never upset a Scottish women! They are made of girders!
  10. Unfortunately there is no mewp access. I've always found oak to be pretty tough so hopefully damage of shoots will be kept to a minimum. I will have as much time as needed to reduce this tree so the greatest care will be taken. I think September will be the best time to prune as oak is a bit late to leaf, any thoughts on this?
  11. Thanks David Great advice!
  12. It's located in the centre of a housing estate in Stevenage hidden by a large block of housing association flats. I would love it in my back garden. So a staged program of reductions every 3-5 years with an aim at getting it back to the original boles?
  13. Quercus robor
  14. I work for the council so it's no financial gain whether I do it or not! I was looking to find what people would recommend as the best way to manage the tree. Thanks.
  15. I have been giving the job from the tree officer to reduce this oak tree by 2 meters as he is worried about the poles getting to long and snapping out. It's an ancient pollard possibly 400 years old and situated to the rear of a block of flats. I convinced said officer to postpone the works until the highest photosynthetic period rather than March, but I still am not sure that a reduction is in the best interest of the tree. Would the tree survive a re-pollard as some of the poles are close together and are only going to get closer. Thank you for any input.
