For the ABC Awards Level 4 in Arboriculture there are reading references after each unit in the handbook. So find the unit you're interested in, find that section and see the references at the end of the unit details. https://www.abcawards.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Qualifications/1466-TOP-10__Qualification Guide.pdf We are running the ABC Level 4 in Arboriculture starting this Autumn. It will be classroom based in the Tamar Valley, Devon/Cornwall Border. If anyone is interested then get in touch with the Lynher Training office. 01822 832232. [email protected] Hope that helps.

Lantra Trainer Training - South East?
LynherTraining replied to Jay Needham's topic in Training & education
There is a Lantra certified course> Instructional Techniques - 4 Day | Lantra Awards WWW.LANTRA.CO.UK A four-day course on instructional techniques. But in Solihull only -
We came across this guide from The Trees and Design Action Group recently. The Tree selection section is very good for tree id. (Sponsors include RHS and AA) "The aim of this guide is to enable more appropriate tree selection for a wide range of urban planting sites. The guide features some opening chapters capturing the latest evidence on how best to approach tree species selection to maximise the benefits bestowed on nearby communities while creating a more sustainable urban forest for future generations. Specific information on over 280 trees, illustrated with over 800 photographs, is included in the Tree Profiles section. A Tree Selector tool is also available to help identify candidate trees by a range of criteria." It is a BIG document and takes a while to load but it is worth it. http://www.tdag.org.uk/uploads/4/2/8/0/4280686/tdag_treespeciesguidev1.3.pdf Hope that helps.

As per the BALI website: click the links to book your touch screen test and to find your local ROLO centre: (Not sure of your location but our next ROLO course is on the 15th August in the Tamar Valley) https://www.bali.org.uk/lisscscs/smartcards/arboriculture-skilled-worker-blue/ We believe that the primary difference between Lantra and NPTC chainsaw qualifications is that all the Lantra courses have integrated assessments with the instructor doing both the training and the assessment. NPTC do offer some elements as integrated assessments but primarily the assessments are taken formally by a different assessor who did not teach you (so like a driving test). Some organisation still see this formal assessment as a more efficient way of establishing that the candidate has understood and absorbed all the criteria required to use the chainsaw.

Agree - Look at achieving your Professional Tree Inspection. Also look at the Arb Association website for training courses they are running to expand your knowledge. And you could look at achieving a Level 4 or Level 6. Its always experience out in the field that will make the difference so try and gain as much experience as you can.
-
Go to the NPTC schedules and type in your postcode for all your nearest test centres. (If they don't do the training they will know who will) Chainsaw link here: https://www.nptc.org.uk/qualificationschemedetail.aspx?id=342 Hope that helps.

Alternatively if an Arboricultural machine you could complete the Bali CSCS Smartcard instead. https://www.bali.org.uk/lisscscs/apply/arboriculture/ All depends on the requirements of you employer/future employers/industry. Hope that helps.

Have a look at the citb website if you have any questions about the Plant Operators Blue Card. https://www.citb.co.uk/courses-and-qualifications/hse-test-and-cards/card-schemes/get-or-renew-a-cpcs-card/ If you have had your red card for two years; find a centre to complete your NVQ, they can register you for your NVQ and send the details to citb who will extend your red card for a year whilst you do your NVQ to achieve the blue card. If you contact your local CPCS centre then they can talk you through everything and let you know where you can get registered for the NVQ in your area.

Training to do LOLER assessments
LynherTraining replied to felixthelogchopper's topic in Training & education
Thats why its best to check with your insurer so that they are aware this is the case. In the situation of kit failure; Its a bit like a chef claiming for food poisoning on his insurance when he's the one who cooked the food. Always best to check with your insurer. -
Training to do LOLER assessments
LynherTraining replied to felixthelogchopper's topic in Training & education
@Con - Believe there is an insurance issue with LOLERing your own kit as if you have an accident they ask for proof of your kit LOLER certificate and who did it. When it's yourself they aren't happy about it; so do check with your insurer before signing up. @felixthelogchopper - Click the NPTC link above (AATeccie post) and then search via your postcode for your nearest NPTC centre. -
Best option is to go to the NPTC website and enter your postcode. LOLER page is here: https://www.nptc.org.uk/qualificationschemedetail.aspx?id=99 This will give you the NPTC Test Centres near you and so if you call them they will either do the training themselves or know who does. Hope that helps.

Harmful/Irritant Plant ID Books
LynherTraining replied to The avantgardener's topic in Training & education
RHS have a good reference page (no photos though); you'll need to know your plant species to know which species you may come across whilst strimming ie Hogweed etc. https://www.rhs.org.uk/Advice/Profile?PID=524 Hope you find what you need. -

Hi Paul, We are an ELC approved provider down on the Cornwall/Devon Border - we have had candidates from Scotland if you fancy a few weeks away in a great part of the country! Find our newly approved ELCs courses at http://lynhertraining.com/elcas/ A note about ELC approved courses: there has just been a big shake up with what ELC will approve for the ELC credit Level 3 training so if you are looking at a package that you like the look of at TKF Training then do get onto it ASAP as they will soon not be allowed to provide packages combining L2 and L3 courses. We are all sorted as we were approached by ELC in December but I know that TKF are further down on the list for the ELCs changes but they will soon be told that they cannot continue to package the courses they currently have. Also the approval process takes a bit of time and patience so they may be offline regarding ELC applications for a bit. This may also apply to other providers you approach who are in the same position so please be aware of this to avoid disappointment; if you like the look of a 'package' of courses then do jump on it quick.

Hi jsrcountryside, We are based on the Devon/Cornwall Border. We run several courses relating to Tree Surveying. The one day Lantra BTI. An intermediate 3 day City and Guilds Level 3 in Tree Surveying and Inspection (Achieving a L3 City and Guilds Forestry and Arb Unit). and The 3 day Lantra PTI. Many of our students find the City and Guilds Unit a great stepping stone to achieving the PTI. Our next City and Guilds Tree Survey Unit Course is on April 10th-12th which can also be combined with the BTI if required. Cost is £485 (BTI is additional cost). Our next Lantra PTI is on March 11th-13th at a cost of £595. Do get in touch if you'd like to discuss. The C&G Unit can build into a full Level 3 in Forestry and Arb Qualification with units including Tree and Plant Science, Tree Pests and Diseases, Tree ID and Planting. Lynher Training

Read all the information about the 'Arborist' standard (which I anticipate is the apprenticeship used) and its assessment plan which are on the apprenticeship service site. It's all about your willingness to learn and progress which, as you are here, is already clear to see. They are putting money into developing a new employee and they want to see their money well spent (and not have their time wasted by someone who isn't 100% committed, or drops out completely.) As well as chainsaw tickets; you will also need to learn your tree id, tree pests and diseases, tree planting and aftercare during your apprenticeship; so lots to study and understand so show willingness to do so. Good Luck.

Hi Jack, We are an ELCs approved provider on the Devon/Cornwall border. We train ex-military candidates from all over the UK who come and stay in the area for blocks of training. Find our ELCs approved training programmes here: http://lynhertraining.com/elcas/ If you are using ELCs credits then do check that whoever you talk to is ELCs approved (check them out on the ELCs portal). Just give us a call if you'd like to discuss anything - 01822 832232

On a general note to all those starting out or employers of low wage employees; if you are switching careers and sign up for jobseekers/universal credit/esa then you can get funding packages for some of these Level 2 courses (chainsaw, climbing etc) either through the job centre or through a training provider with access to funding (like us). There is also a new trial for low wage candidates this year. If you earn less then £15,736.50 annually and have the evidence to prove it (employment contract or 3 months of wage slips or tax return) then you can also access this funding. (So if you found a local training provider with access to funding and gained employment in the industry with an unskilled wage of below this threshold then you could get a lot of training through this government training scheme aimed at helping those in low wage jobs progress their career.) Beware that some of the funding available doesn't cover the real-life costs of running the course so not everything will be offered by all providers and you may need to pay for some elements but overall it can help you progress in an economical way. You can also access part funding of Level 2 courses whatever your circumstances as long as you meet the basic criteria. Just a thought/heads up.
