HSE state: All chainsaw operators should do regular refresher/update training to ensure they work to industry best practice and maintain their levels of competence. The suggested intervals for refresher training are: occasional users – every two to three years; full-time users – every five years. This is a suggestion. The best person to talk to is your insurer and what they expect from you so that if an incident did occur they will cover you.

Not sure where you are based but we are running our 2 day Woodland Management course on the 4th-5th November here on the Devon/Cornwall border. It is a City and Guilds Level 3 Forestry and Arboriculture Unit which can be used to build a full Level 3 qualification. We have the L3 Units of 'Tree Pests, Diseases and Disorders' and 'Tree Survey and Inspection' running the week before; so can be worked into a tidy L3 Certificate in Forestry and Arb Qualification. We are running the 1 day Lantra BTI on the 30th October in the Tamar Valley, Devon/Cornwall Border. This is combined with the first day of our 3 day City and Guilds Tree Survey and Inspection Unit from the Level 3 Forestry and Arboriculture Qualification. This 3 day unit is a great stepping stone to going on to achieving the PTI. Prior to this course we run C&G units in Tree and Plant Science, Tree ID, Tree Pests, Diseases and Disorders which all go towards achieving the full Level 3 in Forestry and Arboriculture Qualification. A Tree Selector tool is also available to help identify candidate trees by a range of criteria." NPTC do offer some elements as integrated assessments but primarily the assessments are taken formally by a different assessor who did not teach you (so like a driving test). Some organisation still see this formal assessment as a more efficient way of establishing that the candidate has understood and absorbed all the criteria required to use the chainsaw.

Agree - Look at achieving your Professional Tree Inspection. Also look at the Arb Association website for training courses they are running to expand your knowledge. And you could look at achieving a Level 4 or Level 6. Its always experience out in the field that will make the difference so try and gain as much experience as you can.
