  1. Thanks everyone. I have contacted my tutor again and he has asked me to look at books by David Lonsdale or R. Strouts for info on surveys so I will try that next. For now I'm just going to ignore the BS 3998 stuff and press ahead with more general answers. The questions I am trying to answer are: 1. Make a list of FIVE reasons why the approaches used for tree surveys need to be systematic (Reference British Standards 3998) 2. Use the concepts of severity of damage / size of any damaged part, and give reference to any defects in the tree under the parameters of BS 3998. The HSE and Forestry Research documents linked above may provide some answers so I will read through them.
  2. Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately the BS3998:2010 Tree Work - recommendations document does not relate to tree surveys. Can anyone with the Tree Life concise guide tell me if it has a section on surveys so I know if its worth me buying? Alternatively if anyone has done the course and could tell me where they got the information to answer the questions? This is driving me nuts!
  3. That would be great thanks Khriss. Even just the relevant pages would be great. I'm obviously new to the industry but I don;t understand why if it is the British Standard for tree work then why is it so expensive / difficult to read?
  4. Hi, I am studying the ABC level 2 forestry and I am trying to answer questions about tree inspections. Several of the questions require reference to BS 3998 in terms of the importance of a systematic and diagnostic approach as well as risk factors. I do not have access to the full BS 3998 document but was advised to seek out condensed versions on council websites. I found a few of these but they seem to relate mainly to work which would be carried out after a survey such as pruning and I cannot see any reference to tree surveys. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any help would be appreciated.
  5. Im studying with HCC too. Plant physiology was a bit of a slog to get through. Some of the questions were not well worded. Something like "give 3 examples of X in 4 named woody plants". So is that 3 examples that mention the 4 plants or 3 examples for each plant, 12 in total? I didnt really find any of the booka I got helped much but you are right about the notes not being clear.
  6. I'm doing it now. Just submitted the 3rd module and waiting for the 4th. Which bits are you struggling with? **Edit - sorry read this wrong. I am doing ABC Forestry not arboriculture. How are you finding it?
