  1. Understood Reg, but what exactly is the difference? Anodized aluminum rather than steel, fancy smancy rope rather than 3 strand. It's the same thing, just modern materials.
  2. Lime.......probably. The smooth bark part probably comes from a repollard.
  3. Crikey! You don't make it easy do you?
  4. M'y thoughts exactly. Not saying they're not good or anything, but there's nothing new about the concept really.
  5. Got a picture?
  6. It's not about anyone's spelling or grammar as such, it's about tree related words that we're getting wrong a lot on here, and I'm thinking that must happen on the quotes and job apps as well. Honest!
  7. Understood 'chucka, but it's really about tree related words and phrases that we get wrong too often.
  8. Let's start by saying that I am in no way trying to belittle anyone who isn't good at spelling, I'm not advocating that they should go to the Derek Zoolander school for kids who can't read good and stuff:001_smile: generally we all know what people mean, or that I am some kind of expert, if anyone saw fit to follow my posts I'm sure they could point out errors. However, I see the same mistakes being made on here so frequently that I figure they must be doing the same in their quotes, job applications etc. What we do is very physical so a lot of us don't sweat the boring paperwork stuff. But the world is increasingly orientated towards the written word. We're all part of that and when we get tree related words wrong in documents it can count against us. So, preparing my self for some battering I'm going to point out a few that are so clear and so easily remedied that anyone can fix them. Not aimed at anyone in particular at all. No 1: Poplar not Popular this is a common one, remember you won't be popular if you cut down your neighbour's poplar (in the London borough of Poplar!) No 2: Beech not Beach, you find squirrels in the first, sunbathe on the second. No 3: Etc not Ect one means etcetera ie. and so on, the other means electro convulsive therapy. No 4: Aerial rescue as opposed to Ariel (or a million other permutations) this surely goes on CVs I reemphasise (if that word exists) this is not a sneery moan. If anyone else has others that crop up and wants to share feel free, bearing in mind it's not an assault on today's yoof or education generally.
  9. Elm for sure, don't know the type though.
  10. Be very careful, if you're over zealous and shorten them even by a little bit they're worse than useless. Very light tickle with the flat file.
  11. What a treat seeing an animal like that. Totally calm. Good pic.
  12. Second hand tw125.
  13. You're joking right? Anyway the straw bales idea is pretty good, I wouldn't bother with the cling film either.
  14. Addendum for TREESEER. If you use the search function and punch in CROWN REDUCTION as a thread title started by COOP you'll find what I was referring to. Interested in your thoughts.
  15. I read on here from our friends in the north that Leeds city council have stated that ALL crown reductions will be refused out of hand. I have noticed on here that younger, more recent college leavers, are more likely to be the "Fell it and plant something more suitable" school of thought. (Picked up from the lecturers doubtless)
  16. I suppose it depends on why they called you, if they phoned you as a arbo.....whatever is was you said, saying they wanted to save it, then fine go on about tip reductions and yearly inspections, if they phone you up and want a price for removal.....
  17. Hmmmm, to an extent yes, but what I'm railing against is the school of thought that tries to dissuade a client who is worried or scared of a tree that they're foolish and need to be educated out of their ignorance. I've taken many, many trees out just to allay clients fears of an unlikely catastrophe. They sleep better afterwards, I've provided a service. Ps I thought crown reductions are the devils work or is that last weeks mantra?
  18. I cannot highlight so I'll address your point about preying on people's fears. If someone is genuinely scared of a tree, ie it causes them sleepiness nights during storms, rightly or wrongly (bearing in mind one can never be absolutely certain of its safety) and there's no TPO etc, it's theirs, and they want it out, you should price to remove.
  19. Today I took down a beech, maybe 100 or more years old, client was worried it may fall and crush his stables. It almost certainly wouldn't, but it worried him, now it's down and he's no longer worried. I could of stood there during the pricing and "educated" him, told him about lifting, thinning and the evils of crown reduction but he wanted it out, so I did it. I guess I have no moral compass.
  20. Derail I know. I tell you what's a good film to watch about insurance. Double Indemnity. Old Black and white movie but absolutely brilliant. Edward G Robinson, Barbara Stanwyk, Fred Mcmurray, watch it if you get a chance, especially on a rainy afternoon whilst skiving off work.
  21. Sometimes it's difficult to not get a little bewildered about things on here. Clients tree, client wants it out, you're a tree company, so do it.
  22. #Arborist. Not being a spelling nazi or anything but probably a good start to get that right.
  23. 560xp, direct descendant
  24. Maybe yeah, but those temps are pretty rare dahn sarfh.
  25. I've done it all year whatever the weather, frost, snow whatever. never had them die back. Old wives tale imo
