  1. Funny I thought! Scrap engine seen them plenty of times before ! But what really caught my eye was the floor covering !! Is that a rubber tiled floor/rubber carpet or what looks the part and I bet it's soft on the knees Can you tells more ? Did wonder if it's a pig to keep clean? Is it a chipper, is it a mower or another broken stump grinder who cares we'll fix it!
  2. A well experienced mechanic usually knows when a bolt is about to shear but a tool failing is harder to predict Now there is the H&S angle the use of poor quality tools which result in injury !!! Sub standard equipment !! If it failed to do the job then it wasn't made good enough for the job in hand! Is it a chipper, is it a mower or another broken stump grinder who cares we'll fix it!
  3. I think some may be mistaking brand names like blue point and others which Snapon which are a part of the Snapon empire but are also not not branded as a Snapon tool these tools are not made from Virgin steel unlike Snapon tools which give the Snapon spanner and a like tools there strength over the cheaper brands the pure quality of the steel is always going to be the stronger. And you maybe able to buy 5 for he price of 1 but if your out on site when it lets you down the other 4 in stock back at the workshop are no bloody use to you now !! Customers cursing you turn up to the job cheap tools that are not up to the job, there down time is costing them you've now have to return to get more cheap tools at your cost wasted time cost money wasted fuel costs money. That's why mechanics now how to there job best, and buy the best they can afford so they can provide the best service to there customers Buy cheap tools to do a professional job is cutting conners we are mechanics not cowboys And I've given up expecting non professional mechanics to ever understand or except that it's our trade and after years of service we might bloody know better! 4. Richard Court a good bloke.. We did this one not so long ago We did the truck body as well!![ Just a little bit far away maybe Is it a chipper, is it a mower or another broken stump grinder who cares we'll fix it!

  6. Interesting! Folk who use tools daily now which is best simply because they have more experience.. Like most jobs.. If someone has been doing the same job for the last 20-30 years then there's going to be a good chance they have worked out the best way and the best tool for doing the job! So why is it that so many who haven't seem to think they know best! If folk think mechanics are so dumb they pay over the price for tools because of marketing then why do so many put there life in there hands having there cars, truck, chipper, stump grinders, bikes in fact any mechanical machine fixed by a dumb ass could put your life at risk!! There's a correct tool for every job and with good judgment and skill the correct quality of tool is bought to preform that job Snap-On tools are made from virgin tool steel which gives them the better quality and strength As for buying out the competition Facom, Britool, Stanley, Black & Decker oooo all one company who are now in buy out talks with Dewalt! Someone who disputes quality hasn't had a good opportunity to experience using it so therefore not suitably experienced to make such a judgment Is it a chipper, is it a mower or another broken stump grinder who cares we'll fix it!
  7. "Rubbish. A socket or spanner is a simple tool with no moving parts. So long as the steel and the tolerances are within spec then a £2.50 Silverline socket will do exactly the same job as the equivalent size Snap-On socket would for £12.50. Drawing comparisons with cheap chainsaws, full of moving and wearing parts, is a false dichotomy." Tool which are made to a budget standard are exactly that! Cheap spanner stretch with use so hen become a tool no longer in tolerance ! They also brake easier and therefore let you down when you need them most. You learn something every day - I never knew these had no moving parts in them !! Ratchets, air tools, battery drills, jack, ratchet screw drives, compressors, generators, retractable air line, welders, angle grinders, chain grinders and I've been using all these tools daily and they don't have moving parts!!! Is it a chipper, is it a mower or another broken stump grinder who cares we'll fix it!
  8. Doobin who said they were using impact tools to undo Stihl or any other hand tool screws? We were talking about impact tools with regards to long stem impact T25/T27 makes no difference in this case as if some sells the one they will also sell the other. And as for wank snap-on tools! Why buy Stihl or Husqvarna when Homelite and Ryobi are cheaper! Snap-on tools are for professional mechanics who use them everyday which many don't appreciate why mechanics buy them because they aren't mechanics, the quality in the tools you use and rely on not to fail and let you down when you need them most is why everyone spends as much as they can afford to buy the best they can get in all trades There are some good tools out there which aren't Snapon which will last you a life time ( I have some!) but these are likely to be tools you don't use often! On tools you use on a day to day basis the cheaper stuff doesn't even reach near the mark. Is it a chipper, is it a mower or another broken stump grinder who cares we'll fix it!
  9. They are like many a folk They won't tell you diddly until you ask them!! They are there to give you advise but that does mean you need to ask! There are many 'Tax Assist' accountants out there who are meant to pride themselves in helping small business if you can find one give them a call .. As a sole trader we never paid over £500 a year and every job we do makes paper work in parts alone Now we are a LTD Company it's gone up to around £1000 a year but use a cash book which records all payments in and all payments out All paper work invoices recites Ect are filed one file for invoices paid invoices outstanding one for recites each folder is split in to months. This will reduce your accounts bill if you do a good job of the latter .. It's all going computerised shortly then the **** will hit the fan!! 10. I do seem to remember it being on a offer but then that would of only been about £10/20 off well worth the money Snap-on do the long Torx probably worth the extra as the toque being twisted down the longer ones really tests some of the budget brands Is it a chipper, is it a mower or another broken stump grinder who cares we'll fix it!
  11. Just out of interest what sort of 1/4" impact driver are you using? Having only bought a Snap-on 1/2" impact drive a few years back (around £75+vat) I had been slowly getting down the list of all the alternatives which never lasted to long with regular use. Once used there was no looking back, just holding it you could tell the quality difference and the performance its never failed to loosen a rusty, over torqued or stubborn bolt, capped-head or countersunk bolt (YET!!) Stick a step down adapter on it and any socket, allen socket or screwdrive tip and away you go. I always use Snap-on sockets tips ect as they good quality stuff which you don't want it shattering when its getting the beans knocked out of it plus if you crack it, split it they replace it! Free of charge!
  12. Not sure about that one? more like good pratice (when assembling) and correct maintenance, I dont think they came under the science title!
  13. Hi Jomoco Quite rightly so, I didn't intended to give the impression that we use tread lock on nearly everything in fact its rarely used as we are taking things apart and rebuilding them daily 10ml bottle of standard strength tread lock will last 2yrs!! In many cases manufactures recommend cleaning threads and lightly oil and refit this for some who may not know is to enable a more even balanced toque setting as the resistance on the treads can have a dramatic difference between bolts, then the factory toque settings should be sufficient to prevent it coming undone !!! I think we all know that isn’t always the case!! It usually only form knowledge and experience the correct practice is applied to obtain the required result and why some jobs are best left to them who know!
  14. One firm I know has a smoke system fitted so when the little sh1ts get in it fills the building up with high density smoke and they can't see a thing even to get out well to give the cops a chance to catch them!! A good friend of mine had his place broke into when the alarm went off 2am he was down there in 12 mins The cops got there in 15 mins they had been and gone about 20 saw 10 strimmers blower lawn mowers hedge cutters gone Is it a chipper, is it a mower or another broken stump grinder who cares we'll fix it!

  17. I've been fixing machinery for over 25 years and using thread lock correctly I've never had to my knowledge had something come loose where it's been used and I have yet to fail to remove anything I put thread lock on! Hence my rant, like many things in life there's a right way and a wrong way!! I hope you don't need to remove them there bolts to soon! If/when you do - and the cup heads round off , run a drill down them to remove the heads, remove the feed roller, heat the remaining threads up (blowtorch will be hot enough) and wind them out with some good quality grips. 20. Having read a a thread about the use of thread lock, in this case it was the feedrollers on a Timberwolf chipper. Should the 3 allen capped head bolts which retain the drive motor spline coupling to the feed roller body should or shouldn't have thread lock applied ? Well it maybe down to personal preference which you may choose (to use or not to use) but all the facts need to disclosed! 1st dont use- the bolts may come loose and need further attention, they may come loose shear off, damage the threaded holes there screwed into!! 2nd use - slap it on these baby's are never wriggling loose! - come next time dismantling takes place the allen socket head just round off, bolts shear off, you can't get them out!! and the cursing starts!! 3rd use with thought!! - This is what the thread was missing no one said it with thought and a little hind sight !! so I thought I would.. First clean threads with wire wheel/wire brush, apply enough thread lock to cover 2 threads 10mm up the thread, this will lock the thread but only a few threads which is all that is needed and as it is not the full length of the threads which are in contact it is easy to brake the bonded seal and remove the bolt. Many don't realise it's only the last 2-3 threads being screwed in which need thread lock not all of them. The only way to release excessive thread lock use is heat, which is in many cases not to much a problem but in this case the spline drive coupling sits inside a nylon ring bush which really doesn't like the heat much ! I know this has been so what of a rant but life is made easier for all if only tread lock is used correctly and the correct grade is used
