  1. you really think MPs/ Parliament/ civil servants couldn't use their time more productively than amending legislation to allow a 4 year old to cycle on a pavement?
  2. Who picked the fruit and veg before the East Europeans then? Perhaps your local farm has Polish workers because they will do the job for the least money? The good thing about Farage is that he has started a debate on the EU and immigration, before UKIP there was no party against the EU and mass immigration.
  3. I have to admit that I think Labour have turned their back on their traditional supporters in the last decades (the working classes). They opened the floodgates to East europeans who are undercutting wages and taking jobs.. Labour deserve a kicking at the polls. The only party that talks sense is UKIP/Farage.....
  4. why not go to one of the big land agents like Bell Ingram/ Strutt and Parker/ Knight Frank? They have plenty people that could advise you. Why do you want to remove tree stumps? Could you not just leave them to rot? Unless they are in a garden or I had to build something over them I personally would leave them. Or if I really wanted them gone I would get a JCB in.
  5. A lot of rich people buy farmland/forestry so that their heirs don't have to pay inheritance tax. This means the value of farmland is really pumped up. If the government ever changes inheritance tax legislation the value of farmland will plummet. The people that I know that own land get fairly cr4p rents from their land. Hardly enough to cover fencing costs.
  6. what is the fencing like? a new stock fence is circa £4 per linear metre (Admittedly the costs should be shared with neighbouring landowners). if you have the spare cash I say go for it nothing beats planting trees/ digging wildlife ponds etc.
  7. How many do you have to cull? What deer density do you want to achieve? Do you notice much difference in tree regeneration the more deer you shoot?
  8. I have to admit that I think the environmental aspects of kiln dried would put a lot of consumers off. I certainly wouldn't buy wood that has been dried by burning other wood, and I certainly wouldn't buy wood that has been transported from East Europe....
  9. I just hope that UKIP will be here for the foreseeable future. For the last decades there has been little to differentiate Labour/Tories. They are both in love with the EU and want more immigration. At least now you can vote for UKIP if you are against the EU/ mass immigration/ allowing terrorists to stay in the UK.
  10. yeah, every environmental problem you can think of is made worse by increasing population. it is about time that we started discouraging people to have kids (especially the people that can't be bothered working). we should also stop giving money to the third world until they start reducing their populations. in 1985 the population of Ethiopia was 41 million, in 2010 it was 83million. It's just not sustainable.... they are chopping down so many hundred thousand acres each year for firewood. I've given money to a charity called "populationmatters" that campaigns on these matters.
  11. we really do need a "like" button here.
  12. i find cotton burns brilliantly - clean flame and easy to light. any old towels/ Barbour jackets cut into shreds are brill
  13. An extract from the website "LOGS DRYING IN THE AUTUMN 2013 AND GOING OUT FAST IN OCTOBER AT 14-18% MOISTURE CONTENT. BETTER THAN KILN DRIED FROM "CERTAINLY WOOD"".
  14. I'm a fairly honest guy (if I found a wallet I would hand it in etc). But I don't think HMRC really want the bother of processing millions of invoices over relatively small sums. A couple of years back I took some metal to the scrappie and got £50, should I have put that on my tax return?
  15. I'd imagine a nice visible trail cam 20 feet up in a tree would put a lot of scrotts off. Unless they are like spider man they would struggle to climb the tree and remove it. I've seen trail cams where the memory card is kept remote from the actual camera, even if the camera is nicked you still have the card... The local council put CCTV into my flat to monitor a neighbouring derelict building. A neighbour was burgled - scrott charged and found guilty thanks to the CCTV.
  16. If anyone needs a hand controlling greys in the Glasgow area give me a shout. I'm a BASC member with a shotgun licence. Nothing I enjoy more than shooting greys.
  17. A low oil price does mess up a lot of bad people like Islamic State/ Russia. It's hard to think that Saudi/ the USA aren't using the oil price as an economic weapon.
  18. my background is construction. if I saw a fencer on a construction site I would expect steel toecaps. it might be a bit more slack if you are fencing in the middle of nowhere. though I would still suggest a strainer post dropped on a foot would merit a trip to A & E.
  19. it's like the scene in "back to the future"!
  20. PPE, maybe stuff like high vis vest, whistle, mobile phone, waterproofs, safety boots. hazard for fencing, hitting serices (electricity gas), slips, trips, driving on uneven ground (overturning), bad weather. I'd mention lone working as well. some environmental guff always goes down well. maybe having dedicated area for refilling tractor, spill kit etc.
  21. anyone seen a forest fire? it must kill millions...
  22. how about getting a wildlife camera? you get to know who is taking it...
  23. I used to work in the Middle East, people would leave their brand new Range Rovers outside the supermarket with the engines running (to keep AC on). They were never knicked.
  24. have you considered a geogrid? you'd have to make sure your aggregate size would interlock with the grid. obviously you'd need a crushed aggregate as well.
  25. geotextile can be expensive if you don't actually need it.... I'd also assume the cost of stone for the OP is low - he is working at a quarry. this is a document that shows how the FC recommend how to construct forest track (with indicative costs), not a single mention of geotextile.... http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/ODW703.pdf/$FILE/ODW703.pdf
