  1. i find cotton burns brilliantly - clean flame and easy to light. any old towels/ Barbour jackets cut into shreds are brill
  2. An extract from the website "LOGS DRYING IN THE AUTUMN 2013 AND GOING OUT FAST IN OCTOBER AT 14-18% MOISTURE CONTENT. BETTER THAN KILN DRIED FROM "CERTAINLY WOOD"".
  3. I'm a fairly honest guy (if I found a wallet I would hand it in etc). But I don't think HMRC really want the bother of processing millions of invoices over relatively small sums. A couple of years back I took some metal to the scrappie and got £50, should I have put that on my tax return?
  4. I'd imagine a nice visible trail cam 20 feet up in a tree would put a lot of scrotts off. Unless they are like spider man they would struggle to climb the tree and remove it. I've seen trail cams where the memory card is kept remote from the actual camera, even if the camera is nicked you still have the card... The local council put CCTV into my flat to monitor a neighbouring derelict building. A neighbour was burgled - scrott charged and found guilty thanks to the CCTV.
  5. If anyone needs a hand controlling greys in the Glasgow area give me a shout. I'm a BASC member with a shotgun licence. Nothing I enjoy more than shooting greys.
  6. A low oil price does mess up a lot of bad people like Islamic State/ Russia. It's hard to think that Saudi/ the USA aren't using the oil price as an economic weapon.
  7. my background is construction. if I saw a fencer on a construction site I would expect steel toecaps. it might be a bit more slack if you are fencing in the middle of nowhere. though I would still suggest a strainer post dropped on a foot would merit a trip to A & E.
  8. it's like the scene in "back to the future"!
  9. PPE, maybe stuff like high vis vest, whistle, mobile phone, waterproofs, safety boots. hazard for fencing, hitting serices (electricity gas), slips, trips, driving on uneven ground (overturning), bad weather. I'd mention lone working as well. some environmental guff always goes down well. maybe having dedicated area for refilling tractor, spill kit etc.
  10. anyone seen a forest fire? it must kill millions...
  11. how about getting a wildlife camera? you get to know who is taking it...
  12. I used to work in the Middle East, people would leave their brand new Range Rovers outside the supermarket with the engines running (to keep AC on). They were never knicked.
  13. have you considered a geogrid? you'd have to make sure your aggregate size would interlock with the grid. obviously you'd need a crushed aggregate as well.
  14. geotextile can be expensive if you don't actually need it.... I'd also assume the cost of stone for the OP is low - he is working at a quarry. this is a document that shows how the FC recommend how to construct forest track (with indicative costs), not a single mention of geotextile.... http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/ODW703.pdf/$FILE/ODW703.pdf
  15. why are you putting geotextile down? is the ground soft/ wet? I'm a civil engineer (speciality road construction), we generally only use geotextile when we are putting capping etc onto soft stuff (the stuff you can push a stick into). It might be cheaper to not use geotextile and use more stone instead? or even just top up the areas that sink with more stone. if the ground is only slightly soft I'd consider a geogrid instead.
  16. the rental for those big wind turbines is about £40,000 a year. puts £20 a month into perspective.
  17. I used to work for a company that were considering AD. One of the best fuels was "chicken heads", the image of loading your AD system with chicken heads has always stayed with me.
  18. I agree with you. I also think that if we reduced the amount of golf courses/ horses etc we could produce a lot more food.
  19. The Common Agricultural Policy only came about in 1962. I never knew that people in Britain were starving before that date? If Britain never starved in 1939-45 when the U boats were sinking shipping I honestly think we wouldn't starve if they got rid of the CAP....
  20. it just seems wrong that a farmer with a business worth a couple of million gets subsidised by the taxpayer. we've watched other industries like mining and shipbuilding go to the wall, I don't see why farming should be different. I also think it's wrong that farmers don't have to pay business rates on their farms. How can it be right that small businesses like shops etc pay business rates and the multi million pound farm down the road pays nowt?
  21. My mate got me a fake National Lottery scratch card, I thought I had won £100k. I phoned my mum up and everything They could be a good present for a secret santa...
  22. My "mate" got me a fake National Lottery scratch card, I thought I had won £100k. I phoned my mum up and everything They could be a good present in a secret santa...
  23. I had one for work. A Myvue 358 - £75 from Halfords. tbh, I don't really feel safe without having it on. It's good to know that if you do have an accident you can prove what really happened... It would also be good if you wanted it as a temporary CCTV system, my 8Gb SD card can record for 8 hours.
  24. The EU just seems fundamentally against the UK's interests. We are net contributors by about £8 billion and we have EU workers coming to the UK and taking our jobs/ benefits/ health service. I'm a Civil Engineer, I've seen Greek/ Romanian/ French/ Polish civil engineers in the UK. But since few people in the UK speak a foreign language the chances of a British Civil Engineer getting a job in mainland Europe is effectively tiny.
  25. Have a google for "yield class". It gives typical volumes of timber that is produced per hectare per year. Be aware that "yield classes" are normally calculated over a longer time frame than 20 years - obviously young trees will have a lower growth increment than older trees.
