    That's a great idea, I often ask for pictures but I may try a WhatsApp video from the street/driveway through to the tree, then a good bit of the tree and surrounding area.

    Interesting watch, I get what he is saying, it could filter out the time wasters. Im with Mr Bolam on his comment about getting as much info from the phone call/email as possible. This can help weed out the time wasters also.

    If that pic of the trunk on the floor is the tree then it's a sycamore, the buds look very sycamore like also.. but no doubt I will be corrected[emoji6][emoji6]

    Looks like sycamore, the leaves are off Beech and Oak. You need to get better pics though. Why not get a decent indent app.

    I give quite a bit of my wood away to people, I give them a call and they come to the job and take it away, saves me a lot of messing. Some give a few beers for it. I keep some for my own use....it is handy to have somewhere to get rid of it if you need too.

    Interesting take on things, I'm very similar although I don't need £500 a day after wages and VAT. That may be where you are loosing some of that work...no offence intended but have you gone over your costs in detail to see if you can trim them down a bit??

    It's funny but I'm the opposite, I almost never go on a day rate as in the past I have found people treat you like slaves, do this, do that, watching you have a brew and at 4.30 want a huge beech reducing......but your here for the day and there is 4 hours of light left......no thanks. I give fixed prices and always over estimate especial on big stuff, too many surprises in big butts to be cutting them up for peanuts. I always price in a chain or 2.

    There are many reasons people can be cheaper than you also, obviously there is the VAT to start with but in my area I think there are only 2 or 3 that are now not VAT reg. another guy I've seen advertises the fact he is cheaper because he owns his kit and isn't paying a finance on it, I kid you not, he had that on his Facebook ad, thing is all his gear is knackered and looks rough, well it will be as he doesn't charge enough to keep it repaired and renewed. Sometimes when pricing it's easy to promise the earth to get the job but in the cold light of day you think shit, this is gonna be awkward.. I never give a price on the spot now, I come away and have a think and then send it in. If I get it then fine and if not then just move on. I've lost jobs in the past for being too cheap....

    We have some bridge job pikeys going around our local area at the moment, they advertise OAP discounts and are pulling them in. A lady I gave a quote of £800 plus vat to and accepted had them knock on her door, they said they had. One to do the trees, sha asked if paul had sent them to which they said yes. They then did a terrible job, ruined a lovely Cedar and through the waste over the hedge into a field,. The bloke then said that one of the trees was dangerous and had to come out. They charged her 6k, made her pay on the spot and left......all in 4 hours. They butchered an 89 year old Man's lovely Euc, charged him 7k for 3 hrs work. A local tree surgeon gave them a slagging on Facebook, they were not happy and in the end offered him a grand to go and tidy up the tree....shocking behaviour but people are still falling for it.

    I sort of get what you are saying but if he's £70 a day on fuel for grinder then it depends how much he's charging for the day. Also as long as your vat reg then there's 20% back to start with. A £250 stump for me would only have a fuel cost of about £10 for example. I know when I did a job for £900 my fuel cost and lad helping wage was £160 I think so that great for 5hrs work.

    Easy, charge what you need to and get the job or let someone else do it. I don't win plenty of stump jobs as I charge a decent price that covers my machine costs, fuel costs, wages etc. no point working for nothing, you break teeth or something and your on a looser. Ent out there that work for little or nothing mate. Don't be one of them. However.....I guess it can depend on where you live also.

    Customer sounds like a nob[emoji23][emoji23] lots of potential for it to go wrong and will be costly. Did he ever make reference to the poor job last time? The damage etc? If he did I would of just told him, pay peanuts and you get monkeys pal[emoji23][emoji23]

    If you priced the job before VAT and can probe this then you should be able to not have to pay VAT. I speak from experience as I did the same, my Accountant sorted it for me and HMRC were ok with it.

    Yea it did but they were ok with that[emoji13] I did have protection mats but the were a bit sloppy in the rain
