1. Thanks very much for getting back to me id be reasonably sure the average is around 6 inches with 4 no 2.4ms in each tree . As you say a fair amount of it is living , and the spots that have died (approx 1/5th id guess) has nice size sized sycamore and ash stems which would be ideal firewood .
 2. Any feedback on one of your ported 357s v a 560 ? . You got my pms on the 357 and the 460 you did for me ? . That 357 is heading on 14 months of almost solid use , just seems to be my favourite saw and comfortably my most efficient , not to mention the sound is just so cool and distinctive . The 460 is a seriously strong saw too and literally unstoppable on 20 inch bar , its a perfect medium hardwood firewood saw . Put it this way ive a 261 hasnt put 50 tanks through it from new and a 661 hasnt put 40 through from new cos your saws are first choice .
 3. Hi everyone . A friend of mine who has a bit of land recently mentioned he was probably going to clear an old softwood plantation . It has never been thinned and is around 20 yrs planted . Id say around 7 - 10 inches in dia , fairly tall . Its not the most accessible site , (fairly steep) . It would be got fairly reasonable if not for free and i was going to try and work out if it was viable . I know this is very little to go on but i wonder would anyone suggest how much stuff might be on this in terms of tonnes ?
 4. Thanks very much for that , thats good money . Wouldnt take much of this to make Lorry load .
 5. Hi , firewood is my main game . Over the last couple of years ive been coming across nothing that warranted consideration for anything except firewood . Shifted a lot of big parkland stuff , thinnings and hollow or decayed woodland stems . Now One of my usual sources is thinking in terms of clearing an acre or two of beech woodland . Its absolutely top stuff , 1.2 - 1.8 m Diameter and branchless for over 12m and subject to being solid would be commercial . I want to have a crack at it naturally but have no up to date reference price . As a few people know im based in Ireland but i wouldnt mind knowing the UK roadside prices as the firewood prices were reasonably comparable (until recently that is ) Thanks
 6. Im in Ireland and window shopping at the moment as it not too long since ive bought a 661 and Spud just sprinkled his magic over a 460 for me . I was looking around at the 50 cc model based on the reviews here but theres no dealers over here . That model really looks the part though and i might be tempted later in the year .
 7. Thats rather a tasty looking tool , how much would it set you back with the wrap around handle , no sugi .... in Euros as a matter of interest ?
 8. I suppose using a really big saw in big timber at its absolute optimum , back in the day an 090 with 4 ft bar and the chain like a lance , so much sawdust you have to clear it to get to the bottom . Either that or on the opposite extreme , snedding with a perfectly sized saw like a 346 or 357 . I suppose using the right tool running at its absolut optimum
 9. Really , do they last ? , who stocks them ?
 10. Looking buff ther big J he said in a non gay way ! .A shade under 6 ft and a touch over 18 st (ahem) of what i like to think is predominantly muscle ... although i wouldnt mind shedding a couple being honest .
 11. Hi , since generally the advice here is spot on what lace type boots would people reccomend (budget around 200euro ) 150 Stg ? . Ground only no climbing , main issue durability ... Are Oregon any good ?
 12. Hi Anyone at it / , what did you think ??
 13. As a few of the lads have said , surprisingly good when dry . I keep stuff like this , poplar etc to burn myself and the seasoned leylandii i burnt this year was perfectly saleable . The economics of your stuff need prpoer analysis id say though ...
 14. Take your point about the 12 by 6 tipper being an awkward beast , particularly in housing estates . They do tow particularly well mind you (steadier than a tri axle in my experience) and obviously if youre prepared to take the odd ahem liberty serious towing capacity . I had a shade under 4 tonne of sand on mine the other morning and id say its not the heaviest payload its carried .

Hi Steve , i acquired the cleaner of those 460s , looks ok (seizure aside ) to my untrained eye . Its an ex estate saw so hasnt the mrks and lumps taken out of it of a commercial usage machine . I will post it to you early in the new year .

 16. Cheap bars , (Archer , Windsor ,Falcon ) are every bit as good as Huskys own , in fact ive an archer on at the moment thats outlasted any husky bar . I will allow that im running stihl chain on this one as opposed to Oregon previously this may be a factor. Short husky bars seem to split at the tip at a rate of knots and the stuff in them wire-edges and horshoes very easily . Theres no way youd get double the work time out of any husky bar (less if anything ) , and around here theyre double the price .
 17. This was fresh ash , nice regular and 3.1 m lengths (the processor guy ) , similar but seasoned myself .
 18. The 441 is an excellent saw , had one on non stop on a 25 inch and it was a weapon . This may seem like sacrilege on here but i have a new 661 and so far im dissapointed with it . Fair enough it has probably less than 15 tanks and is hardly run in , but it seems all revs and no torque which isnt what i like in a 90 cc saw . So with all the rave reviews the 460 is getting ive just got a fresh secondhand one and she will be heading to spud in the new year ! .
 19. Ive been exploring the idea of buying or hiring a processor of some sort . Ive looked at all the videos ,gone to a few demos and talked to guys with one . One guy who seemed on the level reconed he could get through an artic load a day , fair enough i thought thats serious production . However today I dropped in to a guy i noticed selling firewood and asked him what sort of production he could get in a day and he replied 12 bags using the above machine on a MF 135 . The bags are 900 x 900 x 900 similar to what i use myself . Now considering i cut split and bagged 16 of the same size bags with a Spud special 357 , Fiskars x27 and a helper between 9 am and 2 pm on Saturday the benefits would be nonexistant (with the obvious exception of producing regular lengths for net bags). Could anyone fill me in on typical average daily production ?

Hi Steve

I was discussing porting a 90 cc saw 660 or 395 with you a while ago but i bought a 661 in the mean time so its someting in the 372 or 460 class that would be my main focus now . Two 460s have come up locally , one seems sound engine wise but looks like it got plenty of action (without being a complete dog) and has a broken mount or two id say , the other looks fresh enough but has a scored piston .

I was wondering what theyre like ported ang generally recieving your specialist treatment . Are parts expensive and roughly what might i be looking at for you to do your stuff with one ?.

Thanks

 21. I suppose i have to throw a spanner in the works here so ... i had an early 576 , got a handy enough life on an 18 inch mostly softwood and it lasted only around 14 months . Bought a 441 (only because there was a waiting time on 461s and i needed a saw straight away ) lives on a 25 inch bar in dry hardwood and it is an animal only problem is breaking anti vibe rubbers which is obviously to do with what is an oversized beam . Not a very scientific theory i know but I firmly belive that despite all the quality control you still get good and bad in every product , its happened me with cars ,vans and jeeps etc . If i wanted a bomb proof for reasonable money saw it would be a 365 x torq and after a year or so id let Spud or Wyk have a fiddle with her .
 22. Interesting thread , ive always wondered now that all the major manufacturers are turning out 170 bhp plus 2 litres why there isnt a major increase in mpg ,amarok aside . Did i notice a couple of posters saying Navarras will give 30 mpg plus ? , id always heard theyre pigs on fuel ?.
