    Hi there

mid term browser who's begun posting a bit more. so thought i should introduce myself. Alistair. based in North Wales am an estate owner who is endeavoring to bring back circa 200 acres of woodlands after a 60-100 year mismanage/no manage. Have all of my tickets up to large trees which I've been lucky to learn under Phil Dunfords tutorlidge. currently working my way through many old thinnings which are getting the woodstore back up to stock and passing on a few bits on to the local log man - although keen to keep some back to add to my woodland fund. Phil kindly brings a few of his courses over to help out - so I'm aware that there may be a few of the newer people who've helped out. So hi and thanks for all the fish./ and i guess finally if anyone wants any woodland to practice there skills in or any hedgelayers, stonewallers out there need space to do courses or whatnot - drop me a msg.
  2. I know Phil Dunfords got a feb 17th slot - thats N Wales however you might need to be quick to bag it. thats his website. www.chainsawtraining.com/ hope that helps.
  3. muldonach - cheers - theres taught and there's taught - ours are tight but dont twang as for our few hedgerows - as they are butting roads they all have fencing alongside.
  4. hedge - thanks will have to look into the grants
  5. the swing drop traps are fab for this - aka leave a route though - then once theyve found the hole - pull the pin and as they go through the whole the counterbalance swing drops them in the pit./
  6. petzl head torch - the usb recharge ones (run about £70) are my prefered go to - you can get brighter ( surefire) but for bang for buck theyre the best in both durability and dependability (plus you can always throw in 4 AAAs if needed) used them alot in the army and also alot doing mountaineering -so yep got my vote thank you to bob for the wrist suggestion - i can always throw my spare on there next time im running low on light.
  7. dont you watch the countryfile forecast. only one to watch - bar the surf maps.
  8. im loving this discussion as a estate owner in waiting im always looking out for the more sensible option vs the "tis how we've always done it" . as a few have mentioned the humble hedge is far superior in many ways ( assuming you have the men/money to look after them) and the pipe over the wire for known crossing places is what we use here . now we only have sheep and some of those buggers can jump -which is why we have the barb - but sadly our fences are not kept to a good standard - we neither have enough time nor money to keep them fully taught - i wish we did. but the ideas you are putting forward regarding the structure of the wires is intriguing.... we currently have 1 barbed wire bottom followed by the large fencing and then a single HT wire next followed by barbed on top - am i right in thinking that ( in liu of a good hedge) that we should try having only HT? at top and bottom?
  9. ive been waiting for this also - mainly due to whats been happening in the US - butalot of the meteorologists have been saying that the cold temps will just come over the atlantic and just cool down - thus more rain.
  10. you want to look for a farmers store - they always have such wonderful things - OR those pointless mags that come bundled in with the big 3 newspapers that have shoes for old ladies and patio cleaners etc.
  11. ahh the infamous bacon fungus - tis a rare find - not seen that fungi before on ash ive been felling./
  12. sweet - good catch - and well done the police for actually getting up some images./info quickly
  13. thanks john - just about to buy some frame only ones but doing some price searching only showed the £45 fully cleaned and refurbed. think ive found a local supplier which is good.
  14. very nice cockerel - with all this weather you could always get a few tarps and have them like roller blinds to keep the torrents out. as for the above shed - thats some tidy work eddie - may i ask how much you did it cost?
  15. we have just got hold of a nice farm 2000 (small one) and will be using it with a acculator tank and combining that alongside our oil system - having to get wood in now for it as have no real sense of how much wood ill need seasoned to run the bugger. im thiking a 1/3 of a cube a day maybe?
  16. talking of these - and slightyly de-railing - to those of you using IBCs - how much are you paying for them ? as the £25 ea pricetag here seems pretty darn good.
  17. these look very tasty./ i might look at one when the husky one on my 550xp wears out..
  18. i thought that it was fantasitic - bring on more i say - get a few UFC fighters in to coach - andd in some other martial artists - a few kendo types and some history boffins - and it would be amazing - screw football - imagine that in stadiums - i would actually go watch that. rugby with weapons - AWSOME. its a shame that the UKL guys all fought with swords - if they had done some reading the sword was the weapon of choice vs Unarmoured foes - the axe and a maul and a hammer - even a pole axe (led weighted heads) were the choicest of weapons. LARPing is more likely to have salamanders as ive been informed by a female friend who does/did it.
  19. Skyhuck - i wasnt sure if you got the semi- tongue in cheek nature of my post - you are fully correct that the tree sadly is still the persons on whom land it is rooted -it just sucks that what most of us would call common sense would come into operation .. the fact that the insurance has gone hands off is just annoying - but hey ho thats the way this country is headed.
  20. well act of god would therefore apply to the lovely wood that has been Gifted to the owner of the area where it fell (aka the fence owner) - and he can then "sell" the wood to the tree owner to fix the fence.
  21. They look to be the "wheel barrow" bags that you can purchase. side note - how much have you chaps been buying IBC pallets for?
