Proper pruning means cutting cleanly to an eye . Most gardeners , nurserys' use secateurs , which are Ok if sharp and used correctly but they tend to crush on the anvil side , which obviously isn't good. I grew up being taught the old style of pruning with a knife , which gives a clean cut and heals very well. My plant sometimes gets the odd yellowing , but not much.
