  1. its easy for you to work out paul, remember that MA=DE/DR measure the radius of the SW pin (11mm ish i quesrimate) then measure the length of the harken handle 254mm 254/11= 23:1 then measure the grcs pin & remaining stowed strap by the looks of the trees you were on lets say 72mm and repeat grcs handle is 90cm ish so: 900/72=12.5:1 all that maths aside ive been using the grcs for a decade, im a big lad and i can get a fair bit of tension on the grcs yet it seems i can get just as much tension on the sw and sometimes more. back to the maths if you were working on a tree with a monster girth and the grcs strap only JUST fit around you would get more tension on the strap on the grcs so in answer, if you are on a big tree it will be negligible and even reversed eventually the tipping point "X" would be............ 900/X=23 or 900/23=X + 39.1304347826mm from falcrum to edge of stowed strap so a mere (40mm-11mm) 29mm width of stowed strap gives you LESS MA than the SW mounting method! hope that helps xxx
  2. £2300 including a half day training on the device certainly wasn't too much for my boss! that's only a couple hundred more than the grcs! Paul although the lever to mount the smart winch is small the MA on medium trees is actually greater due to the fact the strap isn't stowed on the tension axle
  3. i have one of their custom tarps/ rainflys, and god did it piss down that night! i use treeboats usually they are deffo the best but are only 1 man, when the missus comes with we can share the connect very comfortably, if my hammock's a rocking for treetop camping the treeboat has no rival unless you're concerned about weight that is. henassy is good but even the zip opening ones arnt that great to get in & out of 8ft up. My longboat has cosy insulation and the tent which is really neat! it lets you sleep in the open until the rain dropping on your face wakes you up, lean forwards sweep back 4 clips and your in the dry! the tentsile flys must be put on on or near the ground unless you have multiple guys up multiple trees that is! but man it looks sooo cool!! PS ill include the tentsile stingray rain fly in the sale!
  4. glad you liked it it was my rig, the lower platform was the stingray upside down and the upper level sleeping compartment was the connect literally only used for that one job so grab your-self a bargain
  5. i have a tentsile stingray for sale only used once for some film work so basically brand new, i have a tentsile connect which i am keeping £350 if you're intrested
  6. nick you can stay clippped in with a treeboat no prob's the clip on tree boat tent is designed for this, also the TB tent is super easy to put on in the tree or pull over you in the midddle of the night as the rain starts, it is expensive but i spend over 40 nights a year in it so went for quality
  7. first put something sharp like a circlip pick down to clean out the hex hole then put your hex key in, saves rounding off the top of the grub screw
  8. treeboat with a cozy! henasey is great on the trails but not for up in the topps, DD is great lightweight but not as comfy or as quick to put up as a DD, got 8 hammoks & 2 porta ledges, only ever use 1 porty, the hennasy or the treeboat dependant on task.
  9. treevolution is the only sensible option, great guys there!
  10. what do you want one of them for?
  11. i got some from tree stuff 2day, only bought them 2 days ago!!!!!!!! they're so light they come fed ex express, i was like wtf have i got from the US?......................... NO WAY! they came already!!????????
  12. HS & JS i posted something for mike a while back to do with loler stuff as he said his account is blocked but he's not me, just a mate, the names George BTW my friends call me Gorgeous i work with mike sometimes on big jobs, your probably better mates with him than me if he'll let you borrow the SW! we wanted to rent his for a speed line job and he wouldn't let us have it without him as the operator even though the boss owns his own! Old mill did you used to/ still live in Stroud, gloucestershire? your avatar says surrey?
  13. I used to work your way before i moved down Gloucester. old boss uses ben saxton: 07917543637 hope that helps. our guy charges £65 then £45 for repeats he travels your way but how often i don't know Mike: 07835029923
  14. lol funny bunch, lots of haters hiding behind keyboard ay? a few shots of me rocking the SW, climber on the tips isn't me though:blushing: this was our 1st job with the SW, we picked some big old bits off that garage, gob them on the top & crank them up felling them towards the RP, the grcs does that just as well but when we came to swinging those big stems round the SW excelled! way easier to put on the tree too, a higher SWL & you can pre tension bits that are on the metal bollard, you can run 2 ropes but TBH its easier to manage if you just use a 2nd device
  15. Tree kit claim to have them in stock but when we tried to buy one turned out they didnt have one but can get them in. we bought one form our loler examiner he imports them, £2300 with a half day install/ training. they've sold more SW's in Europe than grcs's the UK is too small & bigoted maybe, it got a hammering on AT once before but really cant see why, its far superior IMO, would never go back to the grcs now
  16. 2nd craig the pick sucks! if your after one 2nd hand im thinking of selling mine, pm me your tel if you're interested
  17. wait a few weeks and try before you buy at the arb show!! simples
  18. some kids came into my garden whilst i was out years back & let my dogs out in the process. Got strait onto the warden and found out they'd been taken to the RSPCA in Preston. When i went to check they were mine the younger of the two was uncharacteristically distressed, they both stank of Piss they had only been there 6 hours. they insisted i pay £180 to take MY dogs home, i gave them my card, they said no cards on Sundays go to a cash point, i'd already taken out £250 that morning to buy some second hand car parts so said i was happy to leave my card with them & come back & pay tomorrow. they said no way and that i would have to come back tomorrow & pay extra for them being there overnight! my dogs were literally dragged out of the room, whining & barking their claws out trying desperately to get some grip on the smooth floor when one got her claw into the door frame they pulled her off making her paw bleed. I was fuming, it was probably a good thing that the handler was a woman else i might have lost it physically and got my self into some real trouble. I spoke to the manager, explained that i was more than happy to pay, that i was concerned with the way they were being treated that they would not be getting their 2-3 hours of exercise per day and that they stank of urine. she callously told me i should have made my garden more secure and said if i did not leave she would call the police. I walked around the back to see if i could see my dogs through the security fence. The row i found them on was very exposed, the wind howls up a hallow valley and buffets this line of runs, almost all the dogs were curled or stood at the kennel end of the enclosures from which they were all locked out. the drainage for these runs sloped from the exposed mesh end to the sheltered kennel end, in short their piss was running from where they peed to the end with some shelter from the buffeting wind. If you kept dogs like that they'd have them off you! only to put them in the same or even worse conditions!! Discusting
  19. its 4kn without breaking or breaking the rope, they did break the rope. The uni has been put to similar drop tests before, the results were much more encouraging. The wrench has also been extensively drop tested and preforms much better. We would aim for a low peak load of course but whilst slippage may reduce the PL it also increases the chance of us striking a limb on the way down. The FA BSEN limits PL to 6kn and slippage to 1m. They are not designed to take dynamic loads. If your anchor is 100% bommer then cool, but how can we be so sure? do binoculars show us all we need to see? a few years ago people would use hitches above their ascender as a back up, now there are better alternatives why not use them? with all you questions mark maybe you should conduct some of your own tests? then share your results with us on AT?
  20. so what if i spliced a rope then stuck a yale ce sticker on it, you'd pass that for loler would you? (by that i mean you would record the item safe for use during a thorough examination) if not how would you tell it wasn't a yale splice? like drew said i can say with about 95% accuracy just looking, felling & touching, furthermore i know a whole network of splicers who's work is top notch, often its their splices i'm examining. Some of these aforementioned splicers have had stuff broken (break tested), others i have broken stuff for. Without supermans x-ray vision you will never see whats inside so your down to traceability, accountability etc that said how many people are going to maliciously make a splice that looks & fells correct but isnt? If you want to loler splices you need to know lots about them & you need to be ready to say "sorry mate, that may well be super strong, safe whatever but not knowing the method or the rigger and seeing some unfamiliar/ worrying traits i cant pass that as FFP) i had an imori splice the other day, the method was not one i've ever seen, the throat was too think for too long then the taper waay too sudden, the cover was also a pretty baggy, alarm bells were ringing, the guy had done it him self & tried to pass it off as a shop splice, i told him where to find correct splice methods & told him to practice a bit before launching into aiming to successfully splice his ppe ropes, since then he's had a skype splicing session with me and is sending a couple of samples to be broken, if you can be sure peoples method is spot on how much breaking is necessary? how often do maufac's have to test their riggers splices? you can become a maufac & go through the process of being able to CE certify your products, its not at all hard but it is expensive, that's what honeys did. personally a ce sticker makes up a very, VERY small part of the picture for me when examining kit! some examiners will fail anything without 100% tracability some can make inform decisions based on what they see in front of them and even ask questions of the end user purchaser etc to help them to their final decision.
  21. toothed ascenders are tested to be 4kn strong and 4kn without damaging the rope and you cant bail out, RW RR, uni HH are all options that are loads stronger, wont damage the rope so readily and you can bail out. some "purpose designed" access lines, particularly the double braided ones are actually among the worst performing when it comes to drop testing toothed ascenders on them this vid involves big drops but not unrealistically so : so 16s was one of the best! surprised? i was anyways, personally frog walker on a RR, RW or uni, loving the RR though! so thats a pantin followed by one of the above with an elastic neck loop (which i actually route like braces over both shoulders secured to the top of the back of my tree motion) followed by an ascender with a footloop being used solely as an aid
  22. ascenders are required to break above 4kn. setting anchors remotely and them deflecting etc can generate forces that exceed that. idustry specific testing & research has been done on the matter and had interesting results, especially on DB. irata climbers back up on asaps, buddys etc we do not. If your happy with a system BS just over 4kn then thats your prerogative. I would not advise anyone to use simply a pair of toothed ascenders as sole attachment in our industry. There have been accidents during canopy access on these systems, accidents that would not have had such serious consequences if the practitioners were on a better suited, alternative system.
  23. marcus, ascenders subjected to a fall actually perform better on a 16s 13mm rope, and perform worst on a DB rope The RW, uni or HH all allow descent and perform well in a fall on a wide variety of ropes the RR also but as theres only a few in the uk, prob' not so relevent. if guys insist on using only toothed ascenders id advise a backup hitch above the highest ascender
  24. technically if the wire rope & winch is only used for pulling & dragging loads it will not need lolering. That said if pulling a tree through vertical you are lifting it until it passes through vertical and it should be lolered. that said i'm sure most people just gloss over the angle of what they are winching. were it to be used to form a high line or winch things off the ground it would also need lolering so it depends on the application. either way you should examine it your self.
  25. kite marks on harnesses? perhaps you can enlighten me after all!
