  1. are the logs still at roadside down there or floating towards france ah staffordshire guess your safe
  2. It's not the same market his logs are imports and my customers want locally grown. my business grows year on year, I haven't missed an order yet for lack of stock, the cash tied up in stock appreciates in value far more than it would in the bank + read the forum how many people cant get stock now, I have the peace of mind that I have a stack ready for processing in the new year, the only change in market I see is you making an income off the backs of firewood merchants. I look forward to 5 years time when all the people who take your kiln come back and tell us what planks we were not to take you up on the chance, I say we but I'm 5 -6 hrs too far north anyway. my main competitor tried kiln dried and he couldn't sell it because of the increased cost, I got a customer who was buying kiln dried from glasgow said the stuff is too damn expensive and burns in minutes and he would never buy kiln dried again some people might love it but I'm sure just as many will hate it.
  3. have to say I don't see the need in 8 years I've had 1 person ask for kiln dried logs, you don't need 50k for a kiln because you don't need a kiln. it's not a game changer its spin to tie you into unnecessary equipment. I can get logs to 15% in a year and oak in 2 years without burning anything I find any lower and the logs burn too fast. my customers don't want imports so I'm not competing in same market as certainly wood.
  4. I'd be more worried about the repair costs after the 5 years whats the life span of the kiln, cost +20% I think it was that I read the other day.
  5. We got the last 3 loads put over the weighbridge even though the lorries had onboard weighers
  6. i sell my nets similar size for £3 + vat and they sell them on at £5.00 and softwood I do in 50x80 which I'm selling £3.00 because the timber is getting bit old but £4.50 + vat when I buy in fresh stuff next year
  7. lt's fascinating so many people unable to buy hardwood and others still selling it for £50 a cube.
  8. did I not hear on tv last night iraq or iran or some desert country has stolen our snow.
  9. the public will pay the money once you get rid of the beer money cash guys, the guy I started selling to few weeks back was charging £120 a trailer load 1.5 cube turns out but his old supplier ran out and to buy from me he now has to ask £190 hes lost about 10% of his customers who are bargain hunters the rest pay the new price and comment on how nice it is to now get a heat from their logs, quality wins over price most of the time its just getting that first sale to them.
  10. I know gatehouse nursery at aberfeldy switched from pto with his palax, he put a big gene in his shed certainly seems quieter but as to power no idea but he says he does 1,500 tons a year so it must still cut pretty well.
  11. I ship logs from guernsey to shetland and banding up bags on pallets is almost as bad as filling net sacks
  12. my customers prefer builders bags over tipper loads less mess I was using builders bags with holes burned in them last couple of years but have experimented with the mesh bags and same size same stock of logs the mesh are coming in 50 kg lighter so the old bags will have to go. net sacks are too time consuming for me not geared up with staff and equipment to go down that route and too cut throat at least for the moment.
  13. when its for an oven species will matter smoke will effect the flavour of the food unless I have the wrong idea of oven being used.
  14. almost 3 hrs since I filled my stove with softwood, turned right down the rooms not toasty but its not cold either.
  15. Totally agree sad thing is even when they need to mix with coal for the logs to burn they still think they did well. got my winblow finished just before dark farmer should dump 15 ton or so of beech in the yard tomorrow.
  16. the bags I weighed were cut yesterday and the timber was felled this summer so the only way to get heavier is change the species.
  17. I just chop and deliver the stuff I try to keep as big a distance from me and customers as possible it's better for my bloodpressure. as someone said to me the other day business would be great if it wasn't for the customers.
  18. why does it need to be a ton
  19. Decided to mess around in the yard today, bought some new scales to weigh our bags and a 90x90x90 with mix of sycamore, ash & birch approx 30% mc comes in at 320kg tested a bag of 18% oak and came in at 273kg
  20. I do the opposite, the biggest stuff on the horizontal lift it on with forwarder smaller rings go on the verticles
  21. I don't run out had 850 cube ready for this season and 100 ton ready for processing atm, i'll buy some more in for the new year. aim is try to have 1k 1.5k dumpys in stock before july.
  22. just ordered a 1,000 of bakers 90x90 vented £4.25 each
  23. I can only assume they don't buy the timber.
  24. If you want to haul it up to perth I'll take it
