  1. I need a new laptop (unfortunately not a desktop as my 'office' is a lean to and I dont trust it not to be damp?) and I'm looking for recommendations. This is definitely not my area, so ideally I'm after exact model recommendations? I need: Something simple, I mainly do very simple word documents, emails, online forms, transferring photos to memory sticks. The most important things are that it will 'fire up' quickly, without wanting to upgrade every blooming time, and be able to cope with being used without being connected to Wifi all the time! Oh and last more than 9 months?? I appreciate this is the opposite of what I said about simplicity, but is anyone successfully using a tablet/keyboard combination for doing their documents? As I do find tablets a lot more user friendly, but would need it to be able to do the job, not be a toy! Or a combination of the 2?? Budget 4- 500 for a laptop, bit more for a nice tablet or a combination...
  2. That erbaur looks good. I have the titan one now, ridiculously cheap, works absolutely fine and given that it spends most of it's time stuffed down post holes, cheaper is better. But I have thought about replacing it with a lower vibe, probably makita, but that erbaur looks like a good choice???
  3. Changed the whole engine and gearbox. When I got it, part of the reason I bought it in fact, it had a 200 tdi fitted! Dont laugh, it was a great idea, easy to find, solid old more powerful engine, but something wasnt right between the engine and gearbox, so it was killing gearboxes. I bought a whole cheap mk4 as a donor. I'll try and get some pictures up, but I've not been successful the last few times....
  4. Sounds like how I'd expect then really! But like you say, itll get you there! Mines a single cab tipper, big lift, front and rear winches(well rear is half done), 2.4 turbo from a mk3, custom shaped tipper to clear the big wheels. I've had it 3 years and its barely been on the road? But as I still miss my completely standard mk3 that went 12 years ago, this one is going nowhere! I'll get it done, then I cant wait to get it on and offroad?? I would love a double cab as well, but the one I've got will be my 3rd vehicle so I really cant justify another ??? If you're on Facebook theres a great group called the Mk1 -4 hilux owners, something like that, very good group.?
  5. Thank you for one of the most helpful posts I've ever seen ??? It's a red one, controls are all levers on the right, so certainly seems basic compared to my old Massey 3060 with everything on toggle and rotary switches! But for a bit of logging, harrowing and topping, levers should be more reliable! I have the engine oil and filters in stock, so I'll do that at the weekend. I have an operator's manual coming in the post, so with that and your post I should be able to get something done with it! Thanks again ?
  6. Nice old hilux,?? how well does it tow that sort of weight? I cant remember having much trouble towing a 1.5 ton digger with my old mk3, but I've been a bit spoilt since then- td5s, 3.2 ranger, puma 110 and a discovery 3????. Oh and a D max??. So as much as I cant wait to get my mk3 tipper back on the road I'm a bit worried what it will tow the chipper and a load of chip like??
  7. I have one, its great. Works just as advertised, nice and strong, lasting well. I wouldn't want to be without it.
  8. Hase anyone got or know much about a Case1394? We have one that's been sat in our shed for a couple of years since we got it at an auction. Fired up first turn of the key after probably a year today, engine looks and sounds surprisingly clean but I'm having a few problems, which is why it's been sat in the shed! They are- 1. Arms go up nicely, but down. 2. I cant get it to rev right up, I think it's just the linkages as I've already adjusted a bit more rev into it. 3. The bonnet, how are supposed to open it, I have managed to fight it open, but now I can't get it to close, part of the tilting frame catches on the air intake. I'm sure this is me not doing it right, but it's a bit annoying! 4. What engine oil should I use, every opinion on google seems different! Any suggestions for any of my questions would be great, thanks.
  9. Do you have a picture of your generator? I do a reasonable amount of work for a very good mate of mine whose a generator engineer, including alternator changes, but being the uneducated muscle on the job?, I always have trouble translating kva into kgs/£££s! But I'd like to help an arbtalk stalwart such as yourself if I can! ??
  10. I've always been good at getting up for a purpose- I semi regularly work with an Old Boy(75!!) putting in soundproofing units on industrial machinery all over the country and if he says, Monday, can you meet me in Blackburn, 8am(I live in Hertfordshire), I'd say, sure, no problem and be there on time. Problem is, his natural waking up time is 4am and I dont have one! So all this year I've left a 5am alarm on, to try and change my waking up time. Unfortunately, right as its started working, the worlds gone on a go slow and I have nowhere to go in the morning!??
  11. Chains through the handle, even if they are only chained together. Battery powered shed alarm. Hide them under 'mess'. My main security tactic is splitting stuff up, I have 2 units, 10 minutes apart, obviously not just for security, but it's a help...
  12. Its utterly mad! Same engines, same gear boxes, same towing capacity, much better body/interior, 1/4 of the price! I've been recommending discos to people for years, while driving a defender. 2 years ago I bought a 200k td5 disco as a back up van/car, did 15k in it in 14 months, not trouble free but I absolutely loved it. 'Upgraded' it for a D3, which I've done a lot of miles in, but quite frankly I'm scared of it?? And to answer the original question, I'd go for a swb 3.0 Trooper, had 2, cheap power, although most people recommend the older, less powerful, more reliable 3.1 model?
  13. A battery powered makita would be perfect for me, I have so many batteries already ? A battery powered saw of any kind seems perfect for by the chipper to me, you often spend longer starting the saw than you actually do cutting so it seems a no brainer really...
  14. I'd just use a powered pole saw, from the outside. Couple of 8x4s on the roofs, for protection only, cut sensible sized pieces, someone else holding/steadying with long armed pruner. Cut it down until it's as low as is sensible between the garages, the cut some slots in the top of the stumps with the pole saw, then spray something appropriate on them.
  15. All sorted now thanks, back to the manky arb waste, which I have the kit to handle. Cheers though ?
  16. I've just come across this old post of mine. These were a great buy, moved tons of timber, more positive grip than with the ripper tooth. One of the teeth has snapped off but after an acceptable amount of work, especially given the strain that they are under when gripping timber in from an angle. And at this price, you could easily keep a spare set! I'd recommend them?
  17. Where are you and how much for the thumb? Cheers
  18. Smacked goolies and dented cars, 2 more reasons to screw an old tyre to your chopping block! Once you've done it you wont go back. Straight ash is generally a pleasure to split, until it's really dry, then it can be a bit too hard
  19. Cheers, I'll start looking for an engine? I've more than had my money's worth out of my chipper but the engine has let it down by being really unreliable recently. I dont use it much, which is part of the problem, so I've been thinking of getting shot but I think I'll look properly into this. Especially with a 50% power upgrade!
  20. Looks good, I might give my Hyundai another chance and do that! Its basically the same machine so should work fine. Did you have to change the drive wheel(s) to make it run at the correct speed, or did it just work ok? Cheers
  21. That's good going? Some machines need another hours meter on them- the how much time it's saved you hours meter! Like my loader, hasn't done 3 hours a month, saved me days!
  22. I hired a tracked forst in January, came to me with 18 hours on, I doubled it to 36 in 2 day?? thank god for Led work lights?
  23. Yes, they offered 1, 2 or 3 days, all including the test, although they did say the 1 day was really just aimed at people who had failed the test and just needed to revisit something and redo the test.
  24. 8 hours the first day, 4 hours the second day, test in the afternoon . I have no complaints about the amount or quality of the training I got for the money, my instructor was teaching me to pass the test. My point is more that if you have no experience of real world towing or loading, did your test then went out towing real loads, you might be in for a bit of a shock....
  25. 2 days, including the test. £500 all in. It was a decent course with a decent instructor, just that there were lots of more real world aspects of driving/towing that didn't really come up. Probably because after talking to my instructor and doing the first hour or so he could see I was fine with towing and reversing, it was just getting back into test style driving so that's what we focused on. Oh, and there arnt exactly many big hills in Tilbury ??
