I don't think the charcoal provides nutrients / fertiliser qualities itself, but it acts as a surface to bind other nutrients (e.g. from manure, compost etc.) into the soil and stop them from leaching away. This is why charcoal needs to be enriched with nutrients to become biochar, and to be beneficial to the ground.

Thanks. I had a look at the Osmo oils, and as you say, they're not cheap! But the finish does look good. Thanks. Sounds good too - not sure if I want a varnished finish, or an oily finish. Think I'll have a go at making one, but I suspect it's not as easy as you've made it sound! Cheers.

Tested out the X27 today, on some old knotty bits of conifer, and a few bits of other stuff. I have to say, it's not all that much better than my toolstation maul. It's got a nice swing to it (and is very sharp), but it struggled to split some of the knotty bits (took a good few whacks). Couldn't split one or two bits at all - admittedly, mostly older partly seasoned stuff, but one bit of recently cut holly resisted pretty hard too. Might be that I'm used to the old maul and need to modify my approach, but it wasn't the massive improvement that I expected. And it got stuck in the wood almost as much as the old maul, and I thought it wasn't supposed to do that. Having said this, I've not tested it on non-knotty stuff yet, and I do think it would do well then, but so does the old maul!

Very nice. What oil do you use to finish them? Multiple coats with sanding / wire wool between coats? I like Gray Git's wooden peg version too. GG, is that oiled / light varnish, or just raw wood? Thanks.

I tried Nikwax on my old waterproof (plastic type, not wax cotton type). It was better afterwards, but not as good as a new coat! (Having said that, new coat was 10 years or so newer, so better technology etc. I imagine)

Will do. Probably won't be until later in Nov though as I'm going on holiday soon. To be fair, only had a few bits that I actually couldn't split with the Toolstation maul - and I don't know if anything else could split them either. I'll find out! Got the fiskars as a birthday present, and I've got some holly to split, so that should test it thoroughly. (It blunted my saw chain quicker than anything else I've sawed up until now!)

Well, ordered the Fiskars. Will see how it compares to my £12 Toolstation maul! (Which, to be fair, has done a good job for the price).
