  1. I am very sceptical that the Russians would do it because they don't need to when they have a tap anyway. My own opinion is it was America or possibly a joint venture with Ukraine.
  2. Mine has removeable plates/rings but it is very rare I remove them for cooking. I have a Dutch oven on legs and I have been known to remove the rings so it fits in the hole. On my old one I sometimes removed them in order to get a log that was too big for the door down into the firebox. My new one has water tubes running across so it isn't possible to do that now. It is very easy to get them in and out safely, just slide them around on the top, you don't need to pick them up and I wouldn't consider it any more dangerous than removing a hot pan from the hob.
  3. We were at Oulton Park when the Transatlantic was on (every Easter IIRC) my socially awkward mate just walks straight up to Barry Sheene and says "Alright Bazza". Though back in those days these superstars just walked around like ordinary folk tbh. Which they are when it comes down to it.
  4. We baulked at the bacon roll that was a bap and 3 slices of bacon for £5 but the 12" sub, 2 hash browns, 5 slices of bacon, 2 sausages and a small dose of salmonella for £7 was not bad for an event. I was surprised how many people had a pint in their hand at 10am.
  5. I've been today and really enjoyed it, saw lots of machinery I wanted to see working (firewood). Didn't commit to anything but probably will. Food was a pisstake but I knew that would be the case before I even left home so can't see how it can come as a surprise to anyone. I don't really know what people were expecting to see there if they have come away disappointed. Any rep I spoke to was enthusiastic, helpful and friendly which is not always the case and a fair few complete strangers struck up conversation too which is unusal. As I say, we had a good day. p.s. I bought some food and felt borderline ill the rest of the day and not because of the price. I can generally eat any old shite without being bad but today was as close as it could be without actually being ill.
  6. Is that the old baffle next to the fire? They are only a bent bit of metal, most ag engineer shops will make one if you give them the bit to copy.
  7. There is a chap on Youtube that talks about covid quite a lot. He was saying that worldwide there is a 17% increase in the excess death rate, a lot of it corresponds to vaccine uptake. I don't know if it is true or not but it does make me wary of having any more jabs. Missus had a booster on Monday and has been a bit rough, she was so feverish last night she had to change the bedclothes tice and sleep on a towel, you'd think she'd pissed the bed how wet it was. She isn't a sceptic but does blame the vaccine. edit to add a link to the guys videos, I don't know how accurate he is but he is interesting.
  8. £25 on the gate is only option, online sales are closed.
  9. Try to have as much of the pipe immediately out of the stove straight up as you can before any bends, this affects the draw. I would put insulated in from the start, if you have cold thick metal it will take ages to warm up and it will be tarring up in that time plus I don't think it best to go to 9" flue if you are trying to get it to draw. Plenty of log burners straight from the register plate to a brick chimney so it does work but not the better way to do it.
  10. I'm thinking if you are travelling down next Sunday you will have missed it no matter which route you take.
  11. It is always worth taking the M6 toll
  12. Website says camping bookings are closed due to unpresented demand. Unpresented? I know what they mean but a spelling mistake repeated 4 times across the page? Did someone edit the website on their phone?
  13. I have yet to see any dealer demonstrating any firewood machinery that managed to make it look like they knew what they were doing, especially in sales videos on Youtube and the like. For a proper demonstration you need to see one that someone has been using long enough for a bit of paint to be missing, they are the folk that can show how things work.
  14. I looked it up earlier and it did say it was a delicacy. I won't be trying it but my son reckons he will. Only affected one cob on one plant, very bizarre looking stuff.
  15. That slug has got big knackers! fun fact: Leapord slugs are so well endowed they have to dangle on a rope from a tree in order to operate their phallus. Similar claims have been made on this very forum over the years. Interestingly they are hermaphrodites so in theory they really could follow some of the more frequently used advice from here too and just GFY
  16. Pie irons are very good for toasties, heating pies or whatever else you can think of. Or a cast iron potato baker, you can put whatever you like in it and use it like a Dutch oven.
  17. The overcentre catch on the clamp band is still saying Selkirk to me.
  18. I wouldn't have a fire that did that ever. You are going to wake up dead one of these days if you don't get it sorted.
  19. If it is any consolation I had a similar issue with a flue and a 1 metre extension sorted it. The bad news is the price of a 1m extension section.
  20. What do you want it to do? Central heating? Domestic hot water? Cooking? Just look pretty? Do you want it outside or inside? Yes they can be combined with an oil system, either using a Dunsley Neutraliser or a heat store.
  21. Local council spent a week making a new bus stop for the school kids so they weren't standing on mud while waiting for the bus. New tarmac pad on the grass verge, kerb edged, dropped kerb, new sign etc. Took a week of disruption with road closed, long diversions (3 miles) traffic lights etc. A fortnight later they changed the bus route, doesn't go that way now and kids have to wait on the other road 20 yards away.
  22. Can't tell from the pics but Selkirk would be a good guess. There weren't that many different makers on the market back then as I recall. Google "Selkirk insulated flue" and go from there.
  23. Someone should tell them it is not normal to have your house hot enough to lounge around all evening in your underwear with not one door in the house closed.
  24. A lot of boats suffer from it, not much sunshine in their tanks.
