  1. Yeah if a neighbor calls and reports a fire..how do the FS know its controlled? Hence you could be made to pay the fee..unless you call them and inform them got going to happen. I suppose too it's also professional and polite. I have my time wasted plenty by of people. I have no need or want to waste the emergency services time for the cost of a call. It also covers your arse if you've got bad neighbors, who will call and complain.. You've done everything right and are within the law. So no one can halt your job.. So you get paid
  2. If it's the clients responsibility even more reason to contact the FS that report controlled burning, if they are called out the client would be responsible for the full call out fee.. The fire service are busy enough I'm sure without getting called to a controlled fire. I'd heard the fee was in the region of £2500...
  3. I tend to ask for a 'weekly drop' from clients for a few reasons. 1. You can pay the guys at the end of the week 2. You aren't getting into a hole yourself and waiting months to be paid (large organisations can take 2 months to cough up these days) 3. Safety net, if you ask for the money on the first Friday morning of the job both you and the client has a ideal time to comment on how your work is going, for you- if the jobs not going well issues with either work or pricing - you can re negotiate if needed. As can the client. As a start up you shouldn't need to borrow wages: that's what your working for. No sense business wise putting yourself in that hole. If it's a 4 week job you can't afford not to be paid if your employing people. Like wise if you need 25 staff at 50-60 per day to complete the job in front of you-- if suggest walking before you can run and start smaller. You likely haven't the info structure to support them. Years ago I used my closest chums and family members to start up. Good luck, a weekly drop is the only way forward- no employer should question it either as it shows your not a mug and won't work for nothing.
  4. Just mind and phone the FB HQ and inform them your doing controlled burning as well!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
  5. This ones on eBay just now for £200!! Looks like a beast
  6. Won't we all be taking Thursday and Friday off for the biggest party ever???????? Oh no that's right, we posted our votes weeks ago and will just be out earning money on Thursday and Friday and not trying to blame our personal failures on a union that's rather good to us but perhaps not perfect. Fingers crossed for a no..then I can start saying yes again on Friday
  7. Yeah mate the bulk for their payment is from the lender. You may or may not have to pay a wee bit depends on the deal. Also if your struggling with one mortgage broker try two or three and pick the best deal. I have been with 2 companies, the current one are great. Tell them what I'm after and they come back with the prices win win as I see it
  8. A lot of my younger self-employed chums also go and work for three months for someone to get the golden 'three months of payslips' to secure their mortgages. As that's all most mortgage lenders are after.. A good mortgage broker is like a good accountant though... They will save you a packet and go through all the companies an find someone so you don't have the stress. Like any service there is a charge. I've just remortgaged my 'non standard construction house' again for 5 years fixed. One call to my mortgage guy ( works for My Clear mortgage solutions, which is a big franchise, so they're all self employed too!) Cost £450. Saved me a packet (-paying £150 a month less) reduced the mortgage by 5 years at the same time.. Happy days. Like most things these days like car insurance etc, going on confused.com or compare the market is less stressful and time efficient usually saving you a bit too Good luck
  9. Haha sorry a Mortgage broker!!
  10. Hamdogg go to an insurance broker.. Lots of them out there. Give them your details (and the stress) a good one will be able to sort you out! Good luck
  11. Thanks for your responses chaps I had had a sneaky suspicion it might be a dodgy coil, just thought I'd ask on here I shall keep at her let you know what it is
  12. As the title says folks, it's a very clean FS410c Brushcutter 2012 model. Runs for 5-10 minutes beautifully then just dies (sounds like it's flooding) then promptly dies. Cools and off she goes again. Got a spark, plugs clean, not junk in the tank or the carb, I put a new spark plug in, fuel filter.. Stihl the problem persists! Anyone had any similar problems? Thanks in advance Colin
  13. Jim don't take my word as gospel, just my initial thoughts of what's meant to be a cracking machine... I test drove a L200 barbarian long bed moments after and found it to have way more poke and better steering. It's just my opinion though Also the steering wheel in the d max annoyed me too haha Going for a run in a high end hilux too so my minds not made up!
  14. I had a rest drive in a d max last week, I wasn't impressed one bit.. Sloppy handling, extremely low geared (okay if your towing continually) not brisk for 163ps! I've a ranger supercab thunder currently which I'm just about to sell... I'm heading to L200 Long Bed with a family being 'planned' currently Also test drove a navara, nice truck, excellent rear seat which buggered off with the pull of a lever so lots of space for saws and tools in the back. (No other double cabs rear seats move upwards I think) New ranger supercab looks good, but very expensive 17k +vat!! l200 lb warrior on eBay for 11750plus vat with 39k miles which is reasonably good value with a canopy, load liner and tow bar fitted.. Also a white warrior long bed with 16k for 12750 plus vat
  15. I went through 5 young guys last year... Just not worth the bother. I have teamed up with another skilled self employed chap, he also provides extra laborers when required. Ultimately saves me money on tickets and I don't need to baby sit anyone. Frees up my time to do more quotes and build the business. Young folk maybe cheap but you get what you pay for. Fine if you have 20 charge hands and 40 youngsters and make £50 per head per day, then all the hassle is worth it, but no good if your a two or three man band! #thejoysofbeingtheboss Good luck everyone
  16. A quick call to citizens advice or trading standards would give you a clearer picture. May save a bit of time faffing around.
  17. For that money an 026 or a Husky 350 or 353 both excellent saws..
  18. Yup, that one looks like a hacked account.
  19. £80 seasoned £100 kiln dried Local delivery and stacking included.
  20. No unless you want a hernia... Tirfor tu16 is a good blend between power and weight. Good for assisted fells and hung up trees.. Tu16 can be bought on eBay for under £250 I bought this one for about £235 as I had a long term borrow of one.... I also bought a little lug all for smaller stuff. Hope that helps, I bought a 5t ace when I started but quickly sold it on for £100!
  21. The trick I do sometimes if I think the client won't go for the job is to give them an email or a copy of the quote with the materials at 'cost' highlighted and labour separate...so they see just how little I am making out of their £400 quote! That seams like a fair quote to me. I'd be charging £50 more labour and graded top soil is 26per ton cost up here.
  22. A wallenstein 520 with a Honda gx200(something) engine, A team of 3 feeding it can gulp through about 15-20L on a long shift. Mainly big rounds with a 4 way.
  23. I tell the chaps just to go round the piles if they find them when grass cutting. Once the customer cottons on that's not why we're here their usually pretty good. A good trick in the summer is to put it 'kindly' in their recently emptied wheelie bin lose. So the sun can help stress your point. ' madam I've had to remove the dogs dirt from the lawn for hse purposes, please keep the lawn as clear as possible, I've disposed of the waste in your bin' I must say though, I've one guy with 5 labs and he's very fastidious with them and rushes out to clear up if I arrive unannounced. If I find the odd one their I dispose of for him. At least he does 99%
