  1. If you don't want it nicked, maybe it's down to driving around in the most undesirable vehicle you can insure. A banged up Rover, Volvo or Ford P100. If you find it desirable, someone else will too. And then there'll be those 3rd & 4th persons out to make money off you both.
  2. Reckon that could be it.
  3. Today as yesterday I expect - rain then dry then rain. So normal with some disconcerting dry spells between. Though yesterday was windy, whereas today, there's hardly a breeze.
  4. How much would you expect to pay for unseasoned oak and for unseasoned poplar slabs? Both oak & poplar are 2"x18"x80". I asked after some and was quoted £20inc. per slab. Is that reasonable or excessive?
  5. Perhaps it's an 'Apple' thing. I can't navigate my way round the sight on my iPod Touch either.
  6. Maybe you ought to stop playing football with it or make a wall the goals, rather than the doorway.

    Old stihls....

It's a saw and it's in trouble, he's probably already interested. I dare say he and others will be along shortly but you could also post on the 'What's on your bench today?' thread. Where Spud and others habitually hang-out.
  8. Now that's neat!
  9. You say with the bar removed you can see the coming out. But are you sure it's getting into the bar and onto the chain? I presume you clean out the bar's oiling holes when you remove the bar/clean the saw/flip the bar over. As no amount of pumped oil is going to do any good, if it's not entering the bar. Visually check the condition of the sprocket nose teeth for excessive wear, e.g. sharp pointed teeth. And for uneven wear on the bar rails, burrs and the like. Dress the bar if needed and replace the bar if the nose sprocket is cream crackered.
  10. Yep. Honister is bleak but beautiful. That small steep beck on the left as you leave the Keswick side, is a graded ww run. Mind it's got to be really pumping to be runnable, when of course, it goes from being, "Look at that, isn't it pretty" to "Oh heck! Who's hellish idea was this?"
  11. Nice view that looking down over Derwent Water, to Skiddaw Man & Little Man in the far distance. I presume you were parked in or near 'Kettlewell' car park.
  12. ... and if possible, have found a buyer for the trees before they're dropped. Also, since it's mixed & neglected, extraction will most likely be a problem. You might well have to first clear working areas and extraction routes through non profitable growth, just to access saleable timber. If you didn't have to travel so far it would help. But even with living away, the transport & living costs are going to mount up fast. I was talking to someone yesterday as it happens. And he was saying about improving outdoor amenity attraction to one of his hotels. "Now you can spend £25-35,000 and say it looks nice. But if it's not going to pull in custom and make more money, what's the point. Ok, you're not landscaping a terrace and improving wheelchair access but the principal is the same. You spend money to make money. If you start spending it but not making it back with a profit, you're going to go bust. It won't cut it with the bank manager, when you say, "It almost made a profit."
  13. Well that's worked, though I can't be sure which one. Towels left on the line by a neighbour, are getting progressively wetter and small puddles are forming.
  14. Some depth gauges have two depths, one for hardwood, one for softwood. The softwood setting lets you take slightly more off each raker. As well as taking the raker down, it's important to keep the correct angle, to both lessen vibration & reduce the likelihood of kickback. It's easier if the raker has a witness mark but the damn things are so small and often smeared with oily residue, that sometimes they are of little help in dim lighting.
  15. You're not alone. I've never yet managed more than an initial look at Arbtrader. Whenever I try to view more than the front page of an advert, I just get things like, "You have to be logged in" or "You're not logged in" or "You do not have permission to view...". I once put a thread up, asking if you had to be a separate member of Arbtrader and how to use it but didn't get any replies. I've tried via an iPod Touch, a PC running Win7, a PC running Vista and a PC running XP. So these days when I see a link to 'Arbtrader', I just ignore it, as I know I can't use it.
  16. Now sunny and warming up nicely. Not used to it not raining though. Have the rain gods forsaken me? What mystic waving and chanting do I have to perform for them to return? Maybe a live sacrifice or two; know anyone you want bumped off?
  17. I'd go to 'Aspen' despite the price. You look at EuroNCAP testing and are careful with care of family & friends. Why not make the switch and look after yourself too. As has been said, it could also be carbon monoxide poisoning and for some info, have a gander through these: http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/learn/carbon_monoxide_kills.aspx http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Carbon-monoxide-poisoning/Pages/Symptoms.aspx
  18. Yes they will. Shop around for the better deal. Not meaning to single out just one supplier but FR Jones gives excellent service, great prices and can collect+return for repairs, if I have that correct. I've also sent you a PM.
  19. Today was sunny intervals, with lightning, thunder, torrential rain and hail... 15mm across.
  20. I can find my way round Bournemouth but Poole confuses me, (except Sandbanks) no one could get lost there. What did you think of Corfe Castle or did you only go for the trains?

    Wind farms!

Different forum - I only discuss such things in private.
  22. Father bought one a while back, for his 'get a small continent inside with room to spare' car. Topped up the first two tyres no problem. Then wondered, what happens if some twerp let's a tyre down to nearly flat. So he deflated a tyre and started from scratch, it was a warm day but the pump was in the shade. The pump made it to about 3/4 inflated, then went quiet. On investigation, he discovered the pump had got so hot, it had fused its casing to the tarmac drive and given up the ghost. From opening the box to dead = just over one hour.

There are other typos but That should have been: Stop the world, I want to get off!

    Wind farms!

Putting aside who's going to make how much from what. As all electrical generation makes money for someone. I heartily agree with generation of electricity from wind. I also agree with generation via wave-action and via both solar collection and indirect generation. I'd much prefer alternate power generation, than seeing loads of trucks and or trains, trundling to 'n' fro a coal fired station or the world having to deal with the production hazards & aftermath of nuclear energy. I can't get my head round why people in general, say wind is the way to go or waves are the way to go, etc., etc. As I see it, it shouldn't be all your eggs in one basket, an either or argument but an altogether approach. Wind farms where there's enough, wave where it can be installed safely, solar where there's enough available, hydro where the flow is sufficient and where it won't detract from either the natural environment or hinder water-users. Plus a greater involment in both production, installation & research into alternative heating systems. For instance, how many new houses have you seen built in recent years? And if those, how many have you seen with solar pre-heat or PV panels installed as part of the initial building or installed as a uniform addition to the build? Not many I'll wager. Why is it not stipulated on new builds or extension, to incorporate alternate forms of energy generation and or heating. I freely acknowledge that solar pre-heat would be problematic on extensions. But why this lack of joined up thinking on new builds? In the town where I was born, they've recently completed a new college, school and leisure centre. Acres of roof surface and wall panels, plus wide open spaces. Was there any installation of alternate power generation, a solar pre-heat for the pool and or washing facilities? Are there any PV panels of mini wind turbines? Windows on sensors that could automatically open, to help cool a building if it got to hot, instead of turning up the air conditioning. Are the heck! No the local authority said it would break up the clean lines and that it would have to be an all of one type or nothing. So they went with nothing. And now they're complaining the buildings are costing too much to operate. That the pool could be limited to only a few days a week and not at all in the evenings. That the teaching budgets for both the school & college could be slashed to help pay for the heating/cooling. Stop the would, I want to get off!
  25. The tree combo or the client?
