  1. Without spending £££ itl be the easiest option. I usually have the saw with me if im at firewood, so i split away and toss the hard to split stuff to the side. End of session i just dice them up with saw. Used to throw to side and leave - but then that pile gets bigger and its a job in itself, sortof puts you off doing it abit. Im currently chewing my way through a huge chunk of oak which was rejected from a sawmill for being too seasoned Got it all ringed up a while back, i cant even half the rings with the wedges!! Whole lot is getting diced up with the saw burns great in the stove mind......
  2. Id much rather it was red, instead blue - but i dont care too much as its just a great saw. The 6800i really is my pride and joy. My only complaint about it is the AV mounts. The Dolly 115i in my avatar is now a blue version too after building 1 saw out of 3 broken ones....
  3. A new piston and pot isnt too expensive, £40 from what i remember. Never used the 6000 but i really do love my Mak 6800i - shes a beast with a 28inch bar!! Your right enough with the 116 and 120 - same saws from what i can tell, just older with different clutch cover and brake lever. Hope you get sorted out.
  4. +1 MTMC is my go to website for my Makita parts.
  5. 5grand? You could buy a Honda new for that (Fourtrax420FM). Depending what you need it for i would actually suggest a fresh Arctic Cat 700 diesel. Abit noisey, and slow (compared to petrol) but tows 1tonne. 2year old well looked after ones are around £3500 and remember - they run on red!! New they are £8000, so depreciation is a killer, but itl last a long time (and not get nicked by an eagle-eyed oppertunist after a Honda).
  6. No problems Iv used them a few times for bars and chains over last few years and theyve always done me well - competitive (cheaper) prices compared to my local suppliers and quick delivery.
  7. go to New Saw Chains - Oregon Chainsaw Saw Chains, Guide Bars, Oil& Accessories at below trade prices!FREE UK delivery on all Bars and Chains!Tel: 01202 580612 click on "chainsaw chains and guide bars" then "find your saw model" then "dolmar" and scroll down till you find your saw and bar size. Oregon bars only, so if youd prefer other makes youd need to look elsewhere. They do Carlton chains which iv heard varying comments about, but i get on fine with them for hacking up firewood.
  8. These guys are your best bet: Miles Tool & Machinery Centre Well priced and very good service. Its where i try and get all my parts.
  9. Change the fuel pipe/pipes and see if it makes any difference.
  10. My middle saw is a pretty old (early 90's) 115i i picked up cheap(ish) which just needed a going over and one or two parts. Was headed for scrap but piston and cylinder are like new so i thought it had to be saved. The rubber AV mounts are easily the worst bit of those saws, but as you say very easy to change. They dont last long and seem to be getting harder to source. The mounts on my 6800i are just as bad, will be very sad when i can no longer get new ones. The 5105 is by far the nicest looking saw around IMO, it and the 7901 are both on my "i want one" list
  11. You see your local Kubota dealership...... but a tin of their orange paint (its so very close to Dolmar) and paint your map top to bottom!!
  12. Thats where i get my parts - far quicker at getting bits sent to me as my local Makita supplier is to just get them in!! (how the hell does that work) They are also better priced. Very good service and can get almost anything (rubber AV mounts being the only issue). Im with TCD here - Makitas are good but Dolmars are immense!! But i still love my 'inferior' Makita 6800i.....
  13. Stihl (seeing as theres no mention of the superior Dolmars.....) Dumfries - Dumfries & Galloway
  14. My Stihl is a 2004 and it has them, so id guess 2003/04. I havnt seen any saws older as this with them. The original ones worked fine on my saw never letting me down. But the oil cap became brittle and fell to bits 2 or 3 years ago and the replacement one doesnt seem to fit quite so well. I still havnt had any issues though....
  15. Forgot about that thread Ask no questions.....
  16. Hmm.... you could be right. Maybe he was trying to get the cork out of a bootle of wine, or something, and the saws just been photoshopped in later Mind you - why full cammo gear to operate a saw?!
  17. oh hells yes! If i had more use/could justify it, id buy your 2nd one in a heart beat! Back to reality though im running a standard Makita DCS6800i (hence username) for big wood. Use both a 20" and 28" bar on her with no problems. Largest firewood iv tackled was Oak in 4ft dia. lengths which had layn in a yard for 5+ years before i got my hands on it. Depending how much work you have for a big saw will determine how much you can justify to spend i guess...
  18. This pic shouldve been posted in the thread about shops selling saws to anyone. This boys got balls. For now......
  19. Agree with gensetsteve - it could well be the bar as the experts have said though - i sharpen freehand and although i know what im doing every now and again i do cock it up (usually if iv blunted chain on wire or stone, when 1 side is more damaged as the other). Its easy done. Take a new file to chain, sharpen all teeth again and then do only the ones on whichever side its pulling to. Go cut something and see what its doing.
  20. Finally remembered to take pics of my splitter, home made job - nothing fancy. The ram speed is fairly quick but she can chew her way through most stuff, if given her time and dont be too ambitious. Doesnt like knots much, but i either just chop them with the saw or wait till brother in law is up with his screw-type to do them.
  21. No problem Been using them a while now for my Mak 6800i and Dolly 115i (same as your 520), i cant find anyone cheaper - online or dealership/store. Good service too.
  22. I use these guys Makita DCS520 Spare Parts | Miles Tool & Machinery Centre
  23. Aye your right, sorry - i got alittle muddled Still stands - aslong as someone hadnt been messing around and dropped a 200tdi into the S-reg (why the hell would you want to - 300tdi is the best of the lot, thats why iv still got mine ) itl be a 300tdi.
  24. If its an 1998/1999 S-reg, with original engine still in it, theres no doubt its a 300tdi. The 200tdi was first used when LR face-lifted the old Land Rover 90 and 110, and gave them the name of Defender. This was in 1990/1991 and on H-reg, the 200tdi was used then through to K-reg. L-reg was the introduction of the 300tdi which ran till T-reg (summer 1999). Td5 was introduced in autumn 1999 on the V-reg. You say the diff-lock lever moved freely, does it move between Hi and Low - selecting each as it moves? If not theres a linkage issue. If it does but doesnt engage the diff-lock then youve a selector issue. Wee tip - if your diff lock does work, dont run about with it engaged. Its a common school boy error, you will strip the teeth off the spur-cog in transfer box and loss all drive in all gears.
