  1. I'm looking for an old log delivery vehicle after my hilux surf died a death at the MOT! Thought I'd ask on this thread if anyone in the South Wales area had something they were thinking about selling, will travel a bit to get it, PM me!
  2. Philmypower, may I ask where you bought that there splitter?
  3. Had a new one yesterday, from a Polish guy who wanted only oak or alder logs. He needed it to smoke his Polish sausages and only thoses specific woods were acceptable. I delived him a bag of alder! ;-)
  4. I've been using Oregon BPX chain (which i believe is semi chisel) for the last year or 2 on a 15"/18" 550xp for my fledgling firewood business. The metal does seem quite soft, but easy to sharpen. Is there much performance difference on the full chisel LPX Oregon chain? I pressumed it was alot more aggressive chain/likely to give you a kick, though would cut wood quicker!
  5. I have a 15" and 18" bar for mine .325 (58) semi chisel. 18" bar is ok, 15" it's impressive, I imagine on 13" its scary! I'm thinking of changing it to a 550xpg to help the hand. Has anybody got any idea what I might get for a slightly over 1 year old 550xp in good order?
  6. Has anybody got any feedback on the AV glove that Rob D supplies? Anybody feel they get some positive benefit? Cheers John
  7. I've started this thread for two reasons. Firstly, as general discussion forum on the subject of willow beds, as I couldn't easily find one on the web. Secondly as I have as question about the willow bed I planted/rehabilitated this time last year! The bed in question was one planted some 10-15 years ago but had not been harvested annually in recent years, so had grown tall into thigh thickness timber. I've coppiced it back to ground level and infilled any dead areas with some of the inch think branch cuttings and also expanded the bed by planting some new rows with the branch cuttings. These cuttings were planted with some 3-4 inches left above ground level and maybe a foot below ground level. The rows were planted about 1.5 ft apart and the spacing of the cuttings in the rows was about 1 ft between cuttings The coppiced stools have sprouted very vigorously, some to 15ft high. The new cuttings planted have also been successful in sprouting, but unsurprisingly not to the same height. I didn't use a mulch or weed killer, but did have to pull up alot of Himalayan Balsam which overtook the willow mid summer. A question I have for any experts on the subject would be about the harvesting of the willow rods that I plan to do in the next few weeks. Do I just cut the new growth (last years growth) ie the withies off or should I be cutting the top off the original cutting I planted as well? Would also be interested in anybodiy elses experiences with there own willow beds John

  9. I've got a 550xp but thinking of selling it to get the 550xpg to help the old hands out! The saws 1 yr old and the only problems have been a replacement brake band, one of the handle bar screws fell out and one of the 'retaining' bar nut fell off (probably me not tightening it enough)!
  10. Hardwood stocks are running low, so 2 weeks ago I switched to telling people that I'm only doing mixed (soft/hard) bags. They're still gobbling it up! ;-)
  11. Eddy_t and woody3, I think you're both missing the point of my initial legitimate question, which is who has ownership of fallen trees on the verges of a public roads! I'm certainly not suggesting its ok taking horizontal wood from private land.
  12. The fact it is on a main road side verge, would suggest council ownership I would have though. Also the removal only of the part that was obstructing the road would suggest either: 1. a team will be sent out later to clear up the rest at some point 2. it is to be left there permanently to rot 3. it will be left there permanently, in the hope that a 'good citizen' will 'harvest' it for there own use So I pose this question. Would its removal represent a saving to the taxpayer and a public good? peatff, I am rather ashamed of that spelling mistake tbh. My excuse is that some of the grammar/spelling round year don't read too good no how
  13. Yeah Steve, I learnt about Hornbeam when I tried to split a load of 10-15" semi seasoned rings with a maul...forget it!! Ironwood.
  14. Anyway back to the subject of this thread. So I'm driving up one of my local A roads and see the remains of a large fallen beach tree laying on the wide grass verge. There are some nice limbs to go at with the saw if I so desire to fill my truck up. Not done so, but would I be theiving it if I did so or is it fair game?
  15. As 2stroke-ady says, the new brake bands are different. Got the new brake band today, you can see the difference. The new one in the background, old one in foreground Different serial numbers - old - 505199501B new - 505199502C
  16. Yeah, mines a yr old and has failed. Dealer's ordered a new one.
  17. Asda vegtable oil, (rapeseed oil) £1.25 per litre
  18. Thats interesting. May I ask the length/diameter of the logs and did you have them covered?
  19. Don't waste your time guys, there's more money in these ;-) 10 Silver Birch Bark Wood Log Slices. Decorative Display Logs. 3 - 4 " diameter | eBay
  20. Hi guys, I posted this on one of the other threads recently and was wondering if anyone would have an idea of how much this order, in freshly cut N. Spruce would weigh? ps. how do you get the goddamn sap off everything lol
  21. Cheers guys, thanks for your thoughts!
  22. I had an unusual request today! A customer wanted a price on 8m3 of green softwood logs approx 6-8 inch in diameter, cut to 3ft lengths. Plus an additional 2m3 of the same diameter softwood logs but cut to 1 foot length, a third of these shorter logs need to be split the rest left in the round. Oh and they want it delivered 1 hours (google maps) drive away from my location! Sourcing is not an issue, as I have suitable standing Norway Spruce on my land that fit the bill I've been scratching my head all afternoon on a price....anyone fancy throwing there tuppence worth in plz ;-)
