1. I've been using these two for the last 6 months on my 550, no problems and half the price. I think the asda stuff had gone up to £1.25 /litre last time I went. I've also turned the oil pump on the saw up to the highest setting I like this stuff because it high in Omega 3 ;-)
2. Thanks Ian. You're right, Axminster have superb customer service! I think we have located the problem.
3. I have recently bought a second hand lathe (Axminster ccbl) as I've been want to do some wood turning for some time, but unfortunately the variable speed control lever/mechanism seems to be jammed! I've opened it up but can't seem to see where the problem is and was wondering if anyone on here had experienced a similar problem or could offer some advice? Cheers John
4. I had the same problem in a the search for a chainsaw protection AV glove..... none on the market! I ended up going for the vibe protection as I have problems with vibration and see that as a higher risk. I've currently got Timberland antivibration gloves, that have no back of hand protection, but do help with the vibs. I picked up my pair unused on flebay for £10 but they are around £35 new instore Timberland Vibstop 1 Anti Vibration Gloves

Hi Stubby, I hope you don't mind me messaging you but I was hoping you would share your experience with a certain strimmer/brushcutter. I read on one of the thread that you are the owner of a Husqvarna 545rx Brushcutter, which is a model im looking to potentially purchase and was wondering what your thought were on it?

Cheers

6. Cheers for the help Eddy, my brother inlaw has stripped it down and it is indeed 'scored to hell'! Thanks for the offer openspaceman. Those codes can't be seen on the affected parts though and tbh we are thinking of getting a new machine. The 240r was about 15 yrs old and battered to hell. Its going to see alot of work over the next few yrs so probably time for a new one. Do you guys rate the new husqvarna brushcutters?
7. Many thanks for the advice Spudulike, I'll have a look back through the thread!
8. On my bench today is a husqvarna 240R strimmer that my mother (age 72) decided to use over the weekend with straight petrol (no 2 stroke oil)! Aaarrrrrrhhhhh!!!! She realised her error after about 10 minutes when the machine cut out and wouldn't restart. The piston isn't seized, and moves freely in the barrel, but it won't start for toffee. Any advice would be most welcome ;-\ Some sons do have em ;-)
9. Do the guys using chip fat run it through some sort of filter before using it? Cheers
10. I've been doing a bit of research this evening on all the different anti vibration and gel pad gloves that people recommend on here, and I've tried to find where they are available on the internet. I'm looking to purchase a pair myself, particularly with chainsaw protection and it looks like the timberland AV gloves are one that seem pretty popular with user. Below are the links to all the gloves I've found, some have chainsaw protection, some don't. If you've uses any of these gloves and found them good (or bad) it would be intereting to hear your comments on them. 11. Thanks Stubby, yes I read yours and others comments on the 'Husky 550xp' forum... useful info!
12. Well its done, I've gone deep and bought myself a 550xp. Looking at it now, I must say she looks reeeal pretty I think that little bit of extra juice will help speed production up. I went for a 15" bar and got myself a 18" spare as well for a bit of flexibility. I'm massively looking forward to firing this baby up tmrw Thanks for all the feedback guys, every one of you have been very helpful and generous with your advice! I'll report back once I've had a bit of time on the saw! Cheers John
13. Guys, thanks again for all the input! It looks like you’re right teepeeat, it looks like availability has narrowed my decision! Husqvarna have stopped supplying the 353 and 346xp , there are none about (or not with the dealers around me at least) Also some of the slightly bigger saws that have been mentioned, like the 357xp and 359xp don’t appear on the website anymore, so I think they have gone also. Tbh some of these more powerful saws make me slightly nervous. I’ve had no formal training with chainsaws, but I consider myself a safe user and being comfortable with the a 50cc saw, I’m a bit reluctant to get one that puts me outside of my comfort zone:scared1: Maybe I should man-up! Well I’ve narrowed it down (with help from Husqvarna’s product changes) to the 545 or 550xp (with 15“ bar on the back of your advice on this forum). I think the new range ‘autotune’ models are probably the way to go anyway - optimal power, better fuel economy, cleaner exhaust inhalation. 545 (which I think replaces the 353)- similar power 2.5kw to the old saw, light at 4.9kg, no ‘Revboost‘, Classic orange! Best online price £437, HUSQVARNA 545 - Professional chainsaws 550xp (which I think replaces the 346xp) - more power 2.8kw, same weight 4.9kg, has ‘Revboost‘, Has the ‘dark side’ sliver case! Best online price £483 HUSQVARNA 550 XP® - Professional chainsaws Looking at the specs I do wonder if the 545 is just an autotune restricted 550xp without the silver case! I’m leaning towards the 545 on old saw similarity grounds, but I suspect the brethren here are going to say get the more punchy 550xp Cheers John
14. Many thanks gentlemen, I really appreciate all of your input! I didn’t expect that kind of response tbh, what a friendly crowd on here! With regard the saws, I like the fact that the 346xp is recommended by so many. NormandyLJ, I’ll thank you if I purchase one, but I’d probably opt for not heated handles, as I find the hands get quite hot in the gloves anyway. The fact its got a little more power than the my 55 may be a good thing with all the ringing. That said its generally not big rings, 15” hardwood isn’t the norm, prob 10” and under mainly. I’d be interested to know why you think it won’t appreciate ringing all day Chris? I think the 365 or 560xp might be a bit big for me I’m not unit myself and that thing might start to own me! The other thing is whether to go for the new versions with the autotune, these new techs may not have had the issues teased out yet? They also have the x torq. 346xp is being replaced with the 550xp I believe The 353 replaced with the 545. I’m kind of keen on the 353. I think because its got similar spec my old saw....don't like change. Anyone here rate this Triobrake? Cheers John

In The Woods

16. Hello, I'm new to the site, so hi everyone ;-) I was wondering if people here would share there thoughts on the perfect saw for a small firewood log sideline I operate. I cut around 50-100 cubic metres of logs a year of thinnings from an young/overpopulated wood, ash, sycamore, willow, hazel, alder and max 15" spruce. No harder oak, beech etc. So not much very large wood and generally dicing it up while its still green. Since I started the firewood a few years I've been using an old Husqvarna 55 which I find just vibrates too much, to the point that my hands are aching the next day after running a tank through it! I've got a 4 new rubber vibration mounts and a new drive sprocket on order to see if it improve the vibration, but looking at the vibration figures of this old saw compared to a newer now I think i need a new low vib model (figs for new models 3m/s vs 7m/s for the Husky55) I run the 55 with 18" .325/58 21BPX and in terms of performance the 55 fulfils my requirements in terms of power (2.4Kw), although it does bog down in thicker wood (not sure if that due to the age or tuning of the saw). If it wasn't for the vibs I wouldn't change but what price do you put on your hands! So to cut a long story short, I'm looking in the £500 bracket something with similar power but low vibes and being a husky man I've been thinking about the:- 353 - I like the low vibe figures (3.1m/s), but not sure if it a bit old and i've read comments its got no guts, though the Kw are the same as the 55 346xp - great reviews but, not sure if it a bit too punch for my needs 545 - I was told this is the new version of the 353 - higher vibes though. Its got autotuning...is that a good thing? 450e, or 445e - super low vib - much less robust saws - will this type quickly disintegrate in my hands? Also the Stihl MS241 look interesting, comments i've read on youtube suggest its very powerful for the engine size, cuts like a 50cc and great fuel economy. Not sure about the electronics engine management reliability though - could I bring myself to buy a Stihl though I'd be very interested in peoples thoughts on these and any other saws they think would be suitable. Sorry for the longwinded post...look forward to any suggestions.
