  1. well i am chuffed, i've just received a book from the states which i am acknowledged in as a contributor and there are lots of my turned object credited to me as well i never thought i'd be in a book. WOOD! book: Identifying and Using Hundreds of Woods Worldwide | The Wood Database if anyone is interested in wood then buy it on amazon as it's incredibly well put together with information that you just don't get in other books.
  2. yes you need to click the quote button. i think as i'm used to colder temperatures the mercury needs to go further down for me to feel what others feel. i am cold if i'm doing nothing but as long as i'm moving a little bit i'm fine. i seem to be able to get a good core temperature very quickly.
  3. no wood is too good for a workbench and i can always give you the crap stuff:lol: i can also cut your rough cut material to size on my ripsaw and plane it if you like.
  4. there is a norfolk skittles game which is very similar to dadlums so you could make those but it's a form of table skittles rather than one needing an alley. just remembered that i have a video of the turning jig, . [ame] [/ame]
  5. i reckon walnut would do the job but i'll check my stocks to see what i have. could they be stained as i have some whitebeam and cherry laurel which are rock hard but pale.
  6. i have 5" beech if you are interested.
  7. the pins are 10"x4 1/2" and the balls are 4 1/2". copy away mate i don't mind
  8. depends on the wood. what are you after exactly?
  9. why are you embarassed if it works for you then there's nothing to be embarrassed about...
  10. some good looking wood there paul. can someone positively id the acer from that leaf?
  11. hi all im sitting in my bedroom and the sunset has just turned the sky red cloud is very low but there must be some high in the atmosphere to turn the sky this red... anyone else got a good sunset?
  12. like this one then? .
  13. is there any lump that you've not turned into firewood?
  14. lignum vitae is whats required for most games. what sort of variation of the game is it as that may affect what the balls should be made out of.
  15. if the tree is hollow then i agree but if it's more sound than not then milling it would should not be ruled out. you can't deny that the timber out of this one would look stunning...
  16. seriously though, if you can manage the round trip of 6 hours then you are welcome to come round and see my device so you can copy it if you like. also got plenty of timber you can pick from if you like.
  17. i'd love to see a picture of the complete set of skittles and balls so i can laugh at them, ahem, whoops sorry i mean admire them of course:lol::lol: where did you get the wood for the balls?
  18. if you have a whole parcel of trees to convert into boards then yes it is... if you have one log that can be handled fairly easily and you are happy to get used to your mill then probably not.
  19. once you've done a few you'll wonder how you ever did without it...
  20. agreed, morus it is. which one would it be though?
  21. you can either use calipers and patience or you are welcome to pop over to my workshop and use my gadget to turn them...
  22. if the customer wants it down then at least convince them to get a mobile bandsaw mill in to turn it into boards, they should look stunning... when kiln dried they could recoup a good portion of their cost to fell it in the first place.
  23. i take it this reply is directed at me. the heating would be very low if it weren't for the fact i live with my mum who feels the cold at 20 degrees... anyway, she pays the bill.
  24. i inherited this from my dad but i am quite happy with the cold as long as i'm doing something. both me and my dad were fine in the lower temperatures it was always other people who are complaining that it's cold when we both thought it is fine. 20 degrees is too much for me.
  25. never been anywhere to get quite that cold. my blood temperature is 2 degrees lower than normal, does this mean that i would be one of the last to get hyperthermic or am i more at risk because i'm closer to that temperature???
