  1. no idea mate, probably a right ugly geezer... might not be that lucky either, i've not told him how much it might cost yet...
  2. this block of oak is going to make a bloody incredible set of bowls... .
  3. another two sets of balls completed that were meant to be done just as lockdown came into being... .
  4. i'll need a close up of the endgrain sanded to at least 400g so i can see the pore structure... could be a silver maple?
  5. i know, i hope to get a nest of three from it.
  6. looks stunning....
  7. my vocabulary in english has always been remarkably high although i'm never quite sure why that is. at school they could never understand why i knew words that baffled plenty of adults... as far as other languages go i can still count to 20 in french but that's about it. when they tried to teach us french in secondary school my argument for not wanting to learn it was that the history class (and tv) teaches us we kept beating the french so i've no need. is bullshit a language because i'm fairly good at that...
  8. can't wait for that bit. do you have a pic of the sawn side???
  9. actually done a couple of sets of skittle balls recently....
  10. just been sent a fantastic bit of oak to turn into a bowl by a fellow arbtalker... looking forward to turning this sucker... .
  11. flute is the name given to the fact that the tree goes in and out from the edge of the trunk. a young ash cross section can be a perfect circle and has no fluting. some older specimens of quite a few specie like yew, hornbeam and robinia can have very pronounced fluting on their cross section. i hope i'm going to get one or two bowl blanks from that elm??
  12. robinia is a lovely timber... wish it wouldn't flute so much as a mature tree...
  13. is that the one from facebook??
  14. just finished a fabulous little job for a guy i came into contact on facebook (seem to be getting a bit of work from that these days) which are wheels for a fairground ride. 6 steering wheels. 4 motorbike wheels. 10 car wheels. 4 spark plugs. .
  15. why not do the first cut with the rack but then remove it to cut the boards the normal way???
  16. is that not the oak processionary moth?? i think that has to be reported to the authorities??? gas the little bleeders...
  17. macro is a very underrated timber in my opinion. no one seems to know how to utilise it. should be good for outdoor benches and garden furniture. i would always want to see it milled but i would say that.
  18. what species of oak it it?
  19. advertise or cut it in section sizes that you don't get at the timber yard. they tend to stop at 4" thick stock. 5x5 or 6x6 newel posts.
  20. that root ball will have some lovely figure in it. if you can't find a turner for it then let me know...
  21. a good sturdy sack truck with large wheels will do that. i've strapped 8'+ boards to the truck and just hold the end of the board to wheel it around before now.
  22. how big are the slabs??? an industrial sack truck might do if they are not too long...
  23. me too for danish oil. tried and tested...
  24. i have what i believe to be a small Albizia julibrissin tree growing in my garden (now potted as it was in the lawn) and i'm curious to know how speedy and vigorous the growth on this species is in the UK??? i originally thought it was an Acacia dealbata as there is one locally and i thought this had seeded from that but on this seedling the leaves fold up at night proving i believe that it is an Albizia species. i want to know where to put it in the garden which is being landscaped. i don't want a massive tree in ten years...
  25. if it's that cherished then get some one (like me) to turn items from the timber like bowls or goblets. the tree looks done for but the wood may not be rotten inside...
