  1. This page is for jokes not facts!
  2. Some more on the other and probably more common symptoms here. Detecting COVID-19 using AI COVID.JOINZOE.COM Our research has been published in leading medical journal, Nature, today. Learn more about how your data has helped...
  3. Father in law just gave us all a fright. High temp and feeling really grotty. We sent him a pulse oximeter as this went on for a few days. His blood oxygen was low so got them to call 111. Off for a Covid test that day. Came back negative but still not well. Called 111 again and a nurse practitioner came out to him and reckoned it was a false negative and he probably did have the virus. Off to covid ward in hospital. Second test also came back negative. Turns out he had bacterial phenomena which is not nice but at least treatable. Back home thankfully now after a hefty dose of antibiotics and on the mend. Convinced all of us that he had the dreaded. Really sorry to read about your mate who died Mark.
  4. Might be looking at this the wrong way Three-quarters of people with flu have no symptoms - NHS WWW.NHS.UK "Over three-quarters of flu infections contracted last year did not have any symptoms, researchers found," ITV News reports...
  5. Exactly whats happening The only snag is they have assured us they wont allow the R to get above 1. How will they avoid that one?
  6. If it had been widespread for that much time it would show up in the excess deaths data. It only starts to spike from late March
  7. Only had flu once but knew all about it. It was back in 2010 and brought back asthma which I had not suffered with for years. Get a flu shot each year now. "Do you think I may have had flu or even C19 and not realized ?" No idea if you get asymptomatic flu carriers but no doubt you can have Covid 19 without knowing. They tested all the staff at Liz's work and 2 came back positive and they had no symptoms whatsoever. This is part of why it is tricky to contain as you can have no symptoms but pass it onto another and kills them! In the German study in my link 20% of carriers were asymptomatic
  8. Reading and interesting study from Germany this morning. If it's right and the UK is similar we might be a long way down the road to herd immunity. ONS stats say there have been 50000 excess deaths (presumably from Covid?) and you could extrapolate that maybe 13 million of us may have had it! Heinsberg Study results published — Universität Bonn WWW.UNI-BONN.DE The district of Heinsberg in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is considered a hot spot for the novel Coronavirus... I really should go and cut some logs instead of trying to understand this stuff ?
  9. It can be a beautiful creamy white in colour. As said very close grain and dense. Make great inlay and detailing. It's tricky to dry as you need to dry any boards quickly or the lovely colour is lost and goes a bit green if dried slowly.
  10. There is no defending that.
  11. "Providing the NHS doesn’t become overwhelmed" there is our big problem. Hospitals still have plenty of patients from the first round still on the wards. For some recovery is a very slow process so it wont take much to overwhelm NHS. We may have built new buildings but you cant train all the extra staff overnight. Boris mentions the R cant go back over 1 again so unless we are super "alert" we will be straight back into lockdown. Mind you they say the R is between 0.5 or 0.9 so glad they narrowed that down!
  12. Let's face it he is to blame for how bad it is in the country. We had the advantage of hindsight but sat back and watched it take country by country and did nothing. China went from dealing with a never before seen virus to having it pretty much under control in 3 months. Ministers said they went to meeting to discuss it in January but 5 months on its rife in the UK. Not condoning the markets in China that enabled this virus to cross species but their subsequent handling puts us to shame.
  13. What do the experts on here make of this slightly encouraging story? Certain landscapes show resistance to ash dieback WWW.BBC.CO.UK Some habitats can help dampen the spread of ash dieback, which threatens ash trees.
  14. Source for that?
  15. We can if we want but that wont protect our friends and family. To be fair they did tell us to stay at home, food shop as little as possible and clean our hands. As a nation we did that for a few weeks but last time I went out for a food shop it was like lockdown was over! Yes the government has been pathetic and ineffectual but it in our hands to tackle this. I think most know what we have to do we just have to do it. I defended the government to start with thinking they must have some grand plan but that clearly is not the case. Feeling extra pissed off now as my father in law look like he may have gone down with it.
  16. And Germany is not alone in bringing cases down dramatically once they started lockdown. Almost all countries who have brought in a lockdown have brought their cases down far faster than the UK. We have our selves to blame for that. If we could do a perfect lockdown there would be no cases in a just a fews weeks as the virus would never get a new host. But in reality loads of people dont understand what we are trying to do or simply dont care either way we keep getting lots of new infections. No idea what the answer is though. I would have had the army on the streets with the police in an attempt to enforce what we were supposed to be doing from the start but that might have brought about other problems.
  17. Yes of course. Couldn't give a flying fig if big brother knows where I have been. They wouldn't find it very interesting anyway ? Been signed up the Covid tracker app from Kings College London for a month which helps them understand the spread of the virus ahead of people turning up in A and E. Some interesting talks and info on the site as well COVID Symptom Tracker - Help slow the spread of COVID-19 COVID.JOINZOE.COM COVID Symptom Tracker - Help slow the spread of COVID-19
  18. Krpan do ones with a clutch driven winch which is far cheaper than the ones with hydraulically driven winches. Good solid fast machine with 1m capacity that you mention. We use the 17 tonne model. The hardest thing for a small tractor wont be the PTO power but the 3 point linkage lift as our splitter is 450kg and the weight is pitched out quite a way out from the linkage. Thor do some lighter pro splitters which are fast but not sure if they offer a winch option
  19. OK I get what you are saying. My family is guilty of this with them dotted around all over the planet. Not that I visit them but they come back here from time to time clocking up god knows how many miles. With my green hat this is an interesting period. You mention the air quality and I saw mention of 1700 less deaths due to air pollution in the UK but cant find the source but sounds more than likely. Let's face it only one species is unhappy about the current situation while millions of other species are having a field day.
  20. Do the tables in this thread help?
  21. Is migration the main reason for international travel? I would hazard a guess that it accounts for a tiny proportion of seats on a plane/bus/ferry
  22. Take it to the extreme and look at New Zealand who have 6 new cases and one new death. You can see they can open up and track and trace any new cases so totally containing the virus until a vaccine does become available. Most countries are tying to lower the cases to the point track and trace can keep up with a future spread. Some may even eliminate it within their boarders. Sure we are only buying time but it makes more sense than just leaving many to die IMO Say we go down the "lets all get it route" and we lose as many as the WHO said is the death rate of 3.4%. That leaves us with 2,244,000 dead and then someone comes up with a vaccine! No government can handle that much blood on it hands thankfully
  23. Looking at the graphs of infection rate I am not so sure. We have twice the death rate per million of population
  24. Spot on. We were so slow to react even though others nations got hit hard before us for us to learn from. First call is lets try herd immunity and sacrifice at least half a million of us to save the economy even though no other nation had tried this (I wont be forgetting this when we next have elections). Then massive backtrack when they realise maybe the public dont want to sacrifice our older generation and a pile of youngsters to save a few bob. Then we are playing catchup with widespread transmission amongst the population. Probably the worst handling of this from any 1st world nation. Not so unhappy with the direction now but why we ignored it for so long was bewildering.
  25. Not tried the Lidl one but my Makita is fine for the odd cut here and there but no way would I want to use it for the constant work of firewood cutting. You would be swopping batteries all the time and need many sets of batteries to keep yourself working. Cant imagine Lidl's version packs more punch than the Makita
