Yes, I cant really see the point of spending more at this stage having never milled before. If I love it and can see it as a major earner can always sell on and buy full on mill with bells and whistles. Thanks all

The difference in price is more than the total cost of the Woodland mills 122 and close to their 126 which was my first thought when I started looking at mills. You can always have little bit for a little bit more. Before you know it you get sucked into spending vastly more than intended. I am just looking to cut structural timbers for fixing sheds and barns on the farm plus the odd sale here and there.More hobby work I guess. As a one man band its easy to dabble in too many games and not make machinery earn its keep.

I thought you lived in Devon! Doubt we will have any 'very dry weather' until next spring unless it gets really cold 😀 Might try that ACF 50 Mind you even if I order today who knows when a mill would actually turn up!

That is a worry. It will have to live outside until I have milled some wood and made a shed with the wood so next summer realistically. I was going to make a cover for the head from an IBC and the rest would have to put up with what Dartmoor throws at it. Anyone else had rust troubles or are most of them living inside?

Many years ago got asked by a girlfriends brother if I could help him in those woods as he was allowed to take any of the fallen wood. The deal was we split the wood 50/50 and I would bring my chainsaw as he was only using a bowsaw (he was 13 ish). We tidied up the place nicely but then got stopped as apparently some 'pro' had been in there clearing tonnes and tonnes of wood. Dont think the entrepreneurial young lad had told Lord Roborough of his plans to get help 😆 First time I was ever called a 'pro' when in truth back then I was just a farmer with a saw and couple of log customers. -
Thats all very helpful. Got to see a Woodland Mills bandmill yesterday. They do offer great value and couldn't pick much fault with it other than a slightly lightweight track. Easily resolved with good sub bearers though. Pretty much down to the HM130 or the small Logosol 751 like Andys. Not managed to talk to Chris at WM as he is away but the Logosol dealer seemed very helpful and have a machine I can see. Like the belt system on yours. All the ones I have seen have the band running on the drive belt which seems odd but must work.

Cant say I even follow this sort of event anymore. They will waffle on and sound well meaning but unlikely to make more than token gestures to the problems at hand. Politics is so short term most just kick things down the road for the next sucker. Happy to be proved wrong though as I am desperate to see major changes This sums up how serious our leader appears to take it

The Norwood I looked at had ceramic blocks either side of the blade I think but it was a cheaper machine. The Woodland Mills is like the Norwood but a steel blocks. I was less bothered about what the support is than the fact its only one side of the blade but its an expensive machine so I guess it works. Are those rollers set up slightly pressing against the blade or are they just lightly touching it? Thanks

Looking at this machine more closely now. It's a lot more than I had intended to spent but does look good on paper. How well does the blade guide system work? Seems its a really solid guide but only has a bearings on the inside of the blade and a flange on that as the back support. This is a bit different to other makes

That was my thinking about a smaller mill to a point. On the other hand presumably longer blades last longer when cutting small sections and from what I have read there is a lot of blade changing required when milling? In the Woodlands Mills range the two smaller models dont have an adjustable blade guide but the HM130 does so hopefully that provides accuracy when cutting smaller sections. Described around 17min 10sec in this video Dont think any of the small mills offer hydraulic log handling but can see manoeuvring the log around on the deck is hard work and eats time.

Having asked around everyone is saying going for the 130. Time to see how many pennies I can scratch together. Presuming a blade sharpener is a prerequisite that needs budgeting for as well?

Re visiting the idea of getting a small Woodlands bandsaw mill. Are there any advantages to a larger mill other than size of the logs it can handle? I am looking to cut boards for construction and not large slabs for furniture type work. Clearly its nice to save a few bob up front but dont want to discover there are other advantages to having the HM126 or even the HM130 Max Thanks

A stone built house with insulation on the outside is the best of all worlds IMO. All the stone is thermal mass so it doesn't fluctuate in temperature quickly. If you insulate the outside (EWI) in the winter all that stone gets warm and stays warm. In summer the insulation slows the walls heating up. And they wall will balance day/night temps

Its not difficult to see why the UK is in mess is it 😂 Completely agree with about the poor levels of insulation in UK homes. There have been grants to help with costs of insulation but take up was not great. We seem to a be a nation who has a very short term view and always want 'jam today'

I put a meter on our GSHP some years back. It does all our hot water and much of the space heating. Thats heating a barn conversion of approx 160 m2 built to comply with 2010 regs From the 31/12/2013 until now its used used 18490 kWh hours of electricity. Thats doing all our hot water and much of the space heating. Thats 94 months averaging 197 kWh per month. Take the average cost of electric over that time at say15 pence per kWh? it works out at just under £30 per month.

I think PV pretty much killed it. PV became cheap and electricity can be used for multiple things including heating water.
