  1. 262XPs that are around for realistic money tend to be very, very tired in my experience. Assuming that the cylinder is good and original, they always seem to have a never ending list of mini-issues (cracks/stripped threads/random missing obsolete parts) that in the end would have half the thing held together by JB weld! I've never found a reasonably priced doer-upper anyway...
  2. Anybody have any idea about factory high rpm/high carb setting for this? Same as Mcculloch 338/Jonsered 2035/Poulan Something-or-other I think? Read somewhere that high rpm should be 13,000 but that sounds high for a cheap-and-nasty. I know it's a worthless bag of plastic crap, but it runs and is on the bench so I may as well finish it... On an unrelated matter, does anybody want to buy a Totally Professional Chainsaw in yellow and black plastic? Apparently it's an absolute classic, although too powerful for many users...
  3. It's a Danarm 55 MKIII automatic RH I believe. In fetching yellow! I don't know about a Mac link although the design looks similar.
  4. Frontier 5L, but with the recoil on the right! Call me a simpleton, but surely the 5R should have the recoil on the right, and the 5L on the left? Yet here we have a 5L with a right handed recoil. Meh. Stupid design anyway; at least when you're trying to figure out if the automatic oiler is working since you can't start the saw without the clutch cover on. 'Cos the clutch cover has the recoil in it! Doh! Runs awesomely well now the timing is fixed.
  5. Anybody know what type of bar this saw takes? Or if any suitable bar is even available!
  6. I sometimes sell saws on ebay. Recently I've had two really strong saws go out and be ruined with bad/neat fuel. Both were in tip top shape, both wrecked by buyers. On both occasions the buyers have returned the saws and demanded refunds which eBay have granted (as they always do). How does one guard against this? Is there a way? I'm about done with eBay.
  7. Do you mean 048? 042 and 044 are different designs. 048 might work assuming you can find pot/piston...
  8. Also pink doesn't attract thunder bugs and other flying nasties like yellow and orange does.

    Husky 350

You need to buy a converting collar/base for the cylinder to sit on if you want to put a 346 pot on it. They are available for cheap on t'bay. To consider: Aftermarket 346 pot vs Husqvarna 350 pot given quality difference? Meteor doesn't make a proper 346 pot (353/346 mash-up). OEM 346 pot would be expensive. In other news, check the cylinder bolts as I've encountered two of this design with loose ones.

    Cheap chains???

Using a new Piranha .325 chain today with a good condition Windsor bar (on a Solo 645) and the chain certainly seems snug in the rails. Not crazy tight, but snugger than an Oregon (etc) would be. The bar was warmer than normal. Not HOT, but warmer than I would expect. Jury=out.
  11. What are people's strategies for cleaning muck from the saw near the base of the cylinder before removing the cylinder? Obviously an air gun, but do people degrease or anything? I've been working on a few small saws recently where access is limited and have been considering this issue sine an airline doesn't budge enough stuff really....
  12. Hardly prime era, but here's my Italian Mac. 70cc. Runs brilliantly; I use it fairly regularly. Mcculloch Titan 70.
  13. Pressure in the oil tank? Loosen the cap when stored? I have plenty of saws passing through that leak when standing and usually just drain them or stand them on a tray (and filter/reuse oil if there is enough).
  14. Does Solo not exist as a saw manufacturer any more? If not, is the spares situation also finished in the UK? I run a small Solo as my 'lives in the boot' saw and rate it far more highly than small Stihl/Husky equivalents in terms of build. Shame if spares are finished...
  15. Yes! I supposed this might be it! I doubt you can even get replacement rings for that saw.
  16. Doesn't have a one...
  17. Compression around 110psi. Absolutely no sign of damage to piston or cylinder. Wouldn't usually bother with this sort of saw but interested in the lack of compression; just worn out? I would be surprised if a saw like this would see enough hours to wear the piston/rings out without something else breaking first. Any ideas? Worth fixing for £30 (aftermarket cylinder kit)? Saw cost nothing.
  18. This is the same seller's web site. chainsaw parts online, chains, cylinder, pistons, blades, cylinders I've used the chap a few times and he has been good. Gets meteor stuff in and also some quite good quality Chinese parts.
  19. I have an Efco 147 (same as 152, but less cc) in the workshop at the moment that I've been using on firewood. It's light and torquey; I like it. It's a farmer's saw really. The 152 would be worth the extra money. I've fixed and used 156s and they're great in an old skool way. Heavier than the current crop (and the 152), but nicely built and good to work on. Very much like Husky 254 and 262 is the 156 and 162. Spares seem far easier to get than they used to be. The MT range is supposed to be bobbins, but I don't know.
  20. Used a chain in the last couple of days on a tiny Oleo Mac that happened to be in the car when I needed to cut 400mm ash. Obviously far too much for the 35-ish cc saw, but it battled through bravely. The chain survived the abuse well, although stretched more than Oregon etc, but was being totally abused... Certainly sharp, and didn't snap under horrific abuse. That's all I have so far. Will deffo try out some on bigger saws next. I guess it's just Chinese stuff rebranded anyway?
  21. I've used Meteor stuff loads of times, and it's always great. Recently I've been trying out the stuff from Huztl which is ridiculously cheap. 'Farmertec' is the brand. Mostly for cheapo saws (Ms170/180,2350, 250, Husky 350/353 etc...that sort of thing) and also a 346 and two 357s. All saws that wouldn't have been worth the time with fancy parts. All turned out fine and are all still running, a couple in commercial environments. Not saying the cheapo stuff is as good as Hyway/Meteor; obviously it isn't, but it's still absolutely possible to built a saw that runs well with the cheap stuff... YMMV, naturally.
  22. Hyway is considered quite posh these days I think! Also, made in Taiwan rather than China IIRC.
  23. Update on my ongoing Huztl/Farmertec adventure for anybody with an otherwise non-viable broken saw... 359 with £20 pot and piston (including p&p, gasket and other bits and bobs) running at 160psi without a gasket. Again the pot looked less than promising, but put it together anyway since there was nothing to lose. Been cutting (300-500mm conifer) with it today and it runs very well. Idles consistently. Tuned it rich(about 12.5k). Interesting (to me). Haven't bothered with any Chinese pots/pistons for a good few years until recently, and I reckon the quality must have improved. Never saw compression like the never ones.
  24. This chap should market these things; he would be a millionaire in weeks! I literally can't see a single problem with the design! [ame] [/ame]
