  1. I saw a once in a life time event. I was carrying out a tree surgery job one day, and the client was with me. I saw a drone and was explaining how to distinquish a drone from a worker. Out of the blue, a queen wasp dived on the drone and raped him!!! wow. So the queen seeked the drone.
  2. Nice looking tree - pity they didnt plant another 2 or3 in between the others to contrast against the green
  3. They're coming into their crankiest time of the year though, as the queen starts to expel them from the nest sck - i know the drones get kicked out this time of year as they are lazy. is it the same for the workers?
  4. for sure i would say Stubby
  5. ive had to descend a tree rather sharpish due to the devil span wasps. once they were in a hollow of a willow i was felling, and once when they occupied an old magpies nest - yes got stung
  6. Looks like a young tree which is lucky- its got age on its side. The tree should be able to cover the wound in time. If i could see the whole tree I would possibly tell you to reduce it a little to relieve wind load. Trim off the splintered wood and loose bark. I would mulch around the base of the tree too to keep its vitality as high as possible - dont cover up to the trunk and mulch to a 4 inch depth max.
  7. burn them - thats what they deserve
  8. The farmer owes you one. You could organise a suprise rave in one of his fields and could charge enough on the gate to recuperate your loss. No harm in that!
  9. morning - Rain , roads flooded - afternoon Windy

  14. Ive seen a lot of Die back on 40 -60 yr old trees in the council district I am surveying (Telford) my recommendations so far are "monitor" I hope they pull through
  15. Sorry to hear of your plight Stubby. He has had a good innings - just try and remember this.
  16. Its going to be windy this next day or two -a bad combination.
  17. I Agree though I had to study it a bit. I can see why Fabian thought it was a fungus - it does look like a desiccated fungus at first glance.
  18. yes yes and yes
  19. looks like bacterial canker
  20. Fascinating Stubby
  21. Google metal detecting spade. Its a half spade with a plate on top where you put your foot .Its to stop you putting holes in your boots. Better going for the more expensive ones as the steel is stronger, the cheaper one can buckle when on hard ground
  22. Great result. It shows that Metal detecting and Archaeology does work together.
  23. Its a common practice nowerdays , I think it keeps the slug population down. On some soils they can get a black grass build up, then they have to plough
