If the fungus is parasitic - with all those clusters around the trunk it would be likely to have evidence of decay if not advanced decay surely it would be worth doing a little excavation around the base of the trunk and main anchor roots, and test bore into the base of the trunk would be better than felling it.

  21. Wearing my bright florescent coat and holding my range finder for measuring tree dimensions. I was next to a road - the drivers thought I was the old bill with a speed camera so I thought I would have a bit of fun. A guy was working briskly along a path, I pointed the rangefinder at him and said "can you walk a little slower sir" - and he did!!! . I told him the story and he thought it was hilarious.
