1. There's some serious merit in that line of thinking.....
2. Don't go and work for someone else - it'll be miserable and low paid. As you approach TX take every opportunity to maximise GRT, EVT & ELCAS: - Make sure first aid is qual is updated - free, not off GRT allowance. - Get alongside the CTP organisation - some things can only (officially) be done in last 24months but biscuits and a personal visit / intro may get you sat in on some really useful courses before TX-24. - HMRC tax workshop / small business administration courses are a must if you get a chance - Start buying kit and doing jobs before you leave, register as self employed and off set necessary expenditure against your other earned income (MoD salary) Get alongside some other ex-Service bods and work in a loose co-operative of sole traders - it gives you flexibility and agility without the commitment of taking on staff or worrying if you have enough work during quieter times.
3. Have a look here.... BS Embroidery Plus I've had Summer & Winter gear, shell jackets, rugby jerseys, T shirts and breathable gear from Griff @ BS Embroidery. You can have it stitched or screen printed, some of the workwear I've bought has been good for several years of hard graft and is still bearing up. Price is exceptionally competitive - the base garment is not cheap as chips and falls apart after a month and the embroidery / screen printing lasts the life of the garment - bearing in mind, workwear gets used to destruction. There's a previous thread(s) somewhere about work wear. If you want a company image I get that... Don't really get how there is so much push back?
4. Posts 121-124 have just cracked me up! Last couple of years can be loosely summed up as being happy with 1 or 2 jobs a week, quoting high and only for the jobs I fancied, ignoring calls from people that looked "odd" or didn't provide foot massage & ice cream mid afternoon, preferential rates for jobs that were particularly interesting/challenging or Cameron Diaz. 2 days a week childcare and any free time spent working on the house. Things went a bit nuts last 12 months, jobs backing up, sleepless nights worrying about how to get it all done, grumpy with the Mrs (more grumpy than usual), starting to feel old and tired and loosing some of the passion for being up a tree. Whilst the cash (turn of phrase rather than bundles of folding money under the mattress now that every government agency from DWP, MI5, HMRC, VOSA, trading standards, DEFRA, GCHQ, Natoional Probation Service have picked up on the keywords, by the way, if you are looking in David Lawson from HMRC, be sure to check your car thoroughly you ......) has been nice, the hassle has been a hassle. VaT Reg is the next admin task to get done.....
5. Talk to a decent sign writer. There's more to vehicle advertising than meets the eye. Example - (a) start looking at vans and see how many tell you what they do and how to contact them, and then be aware of how many are "sign written" but don't actually do (a). May sound simple, but I was surprised! Maybe I'm simple, but a sign writer told me that and he was spot on!
6. No doubt about it, it's a cracking unit. I looked at these but, for my applications, found there were alternatives that offered greater flexibility / utility at a more competitive price. Horses for courses, and if money were no object, I'd want one!
7. Your paragraph 2 & 3 sound very familiar and similar (but applying the opposite logic) in an attempt to suppress the potential development. 1 set of guidelines / recommendations - 2 completely different interpretations. It's a funny old game.....
8.
Sorry, forgot email address..... [email protected]

9. I've been home today and answered the phone a couple of times - unusually. Done a lot of swearing! Had one try and tell me she wasn't wasting my time, it was really important because I had a problem with my Microsoft PC.... FO I'm on AppleMac seemed to cause some offence and she tried to lambast me for unacceptable language and the threat of terminating the call. Good, FO and don't call again didn't go down particularly well but made me chuckle......
10. That's quite interesting... Was it 'advantageous' (for want of a better word) to the developer to have circular rather than elliptical RPAs? Reason I ask, is that I've experienced a near opposite and I wonder if it is actually aversion to development rather than application of common sense or observable detail that tends to creep into the decision making cycle....? My example was an historic industrial rail yard (mining heritage area) where there was an existing concrete cap for pre-fab domestic car garage + turning / parking over the site which was formerly used for slag / coke tipping and was incredibly compacted and inhospitable for root development. Proposal was removal of derelict pre-fab garages, sympathetic renovation of heritage site building and addition of contemporary extension. On the boundary adjoining the site, with a 2m level change up, growing atop of the dry stone wall stood a TPO'd mature Beech. I argued that RPA should be elliptical given the topography, current and historical ground composition. TO insisted it be circular. It was an argument that didn't need to fought to conclusion because, whilst inconvenient, the circular RPA didn't overtly impinge on the potential development - just made it more difficult and costly in terms of management of the site (and gave the impression of a last ditch attempt to block a development that had been in the planning mire for many years! The project is almost finished now and, to my mind, has brought several more generations of use from a formerly derelict historically significant building.
11. Just for balance.... We might consider the same is true of TO's no? https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/advice/planning/jobprofiles/Pages/arboriculturalofficer.aspx A bit dated perhaps, but can anyone demonstrate a significant change to the findings presented at para's 161-166? https://committeeadmin.lancaster.gov.uk/documents/s21579/Appx2_TreesInTowns.pdf Is it appropriate for a TO to apply personal interpretation such that their life be "made easier" (possibly resulting in delay of an application or additional financial burden) on the basis of personal preference rather than a specified requirement in BS recommendation? Hopefully, everybody would be looking to achieve efficiency and effective working relationships based on mutual trust and respect but variations in regional, personal and organisational requirements just make for confusion and frustration for all.
12. Just a light hearted observation of how things have changed....
13. In a more refined British way.... Perhaps the French, as our nearest neighbours, historical friends & foes, and with whom we share many social, economic and cultural similarities for example, would be a reasonable comparison.... Unlike the French, who might, historically, undertake full scale revolutionary uprising of the population and still today retain a tendency to direct action through blockading the sea ports with tractors and burning tires for example.... The British 'nature' is more conservative (small 'c' 😆) OK, we can recall the poll tax riots (across social and cultural divides) and the miners strike (somewhat more localised) and perhaps even the London riots (predominantly career anarchists, disaffected, Ill disciplined criminal youth) as recent examples... But in general, the main stream Brit's, I think, are considerably more constrained in their willingness to subscribe to direct action. But...... There will come a breaking point, when, where and how..... I eagerly wait to see. Bungalow probably safe for the foreseeable future.... Not sure any of us will be quite so secure as Sharia law becomes established, as it naturally must....

15. Right-on Sean! All understood and appreciated! If you're ever down Liskeard way and fancy a brew...
16. Thanks Jules, all understood and appreciated, original application did not present a video drain survey since I didn't want them to incur the expense at that stage. It was hoped that we (homeowner /LPA) might have a meeting of minds, in hindsight, about the wisdom of TPOing this particular tree. Application Decision is not formally issued yet so there may be some room for manoeuvre if homeowner wants to engage a video survey of drains.
17. That might at least have lasted 5 yrs rather than 5 minutes!
18. Yes, that was it..... How did you get the link?? It's not working now.... Comes up as invalid link...
19. Brilliant! We can still get him on here though!!
