  1. My guess woul be ignition switch. Take it out and check you have voltage to it. Then jump the outage to the starter wire on switch. Basically sounds like ignition switch is shot. Have a look at the wires going in and out of it see if one has gone.

    The boat was lifted out today for its six monthly checks and service. I made it just in time to see her go back in water. Was too busy working today to get there. Total weight of the crane was 45t.
  4. Cheers spud. I havnt looked into it yet. But after trying to start a very strong smell of petrol from exhaust. The bike hates choke. But also need high revs to get the power to pull away. It's only a small engine. But sonds very strange to me. Well get the make and model.
  5. Ok so for the piston. Remove the exhaust so you can see the cylinder. Look into the exhaust port and move the piston up or down so you can see the side of the piston and the rings. Get a pic of this part up and we will be able to tell you. But there should be no scoring or black lines, so it shouldn't look like a bar code on the side of the piston.
  6. Ok. So by the sound of the "drop test"( very technical that) the comp sonde low. It should take roughly 10 seconds for the saw to drop down the pull cord. So next step is a comp tester. Find a local friendly garage and ask if you could plug there's into it. 5 to 6 pulls on the tester is normally enough. The adjuster sounds like there is a bit missing. Below is a picture from google of an assembly. In the picture of yours looks like the locating stud that runs on the thread that locates into bar hole isn't there, unless you have removed it and its not in the picture.

Smart is going in the book tho. :lol::lol::lol: Sorry but as it seems with most threads on the tech side of things I'm going to do a slight derail. Mate has a two stroke motorbike, it floods very easily and starting is a bugger, I did read about the reed valves but I'm unsure to be honest. Anyway what do you know about two stroke bikes with reed valves, sorry will get the make and model and let you know what it actually is, just fishing to see what you know spud? Yeah two strokes can be very easy but can really mess you up. I got this first hand with what has to be the most finicky, confusing, smallest, and excellent saw of all time. Can anyone guess the saw??? Spud you are not allowed to answer this question :001_tt2:
  8. I've been rec climbing on it for ages now. I find it easy and nice to use.
  9. The tank vent can be tested by pressure testing the tank. Before the pressure tester came along I used to blow back down the fuel pipe with the cap on and see if it built up pressure, also sucked on it with tank empty to ensure the vent was letting air in. But I guess that's probably a bad idea nowadays.
  10. The only way to narrow anything down is to try certain things. Bit like a food allergy where you will eat certain things to see what the trigger is. Sounds harsh and I know I wouldn't really want to do anything like it to my son. Could also be chemicals that can cause hives so may it actually be wood or plants. Does the company spray anything in the woods? Could also be bugs or insects. May need to check to see if any new insects have moved into the area. I don't know what wood school is. Never heard of it.
  11. I brought a brig part wheel bearing kit. Needed one soon as the old one destroyed itself. Touch wood its been fine since April. But then I did pack it with grease on reassemble. Also brought a mirror and it fitted fine. Must be defender parts. So what other makes of parts other than brig part do people reccomened as I've seen plenty of after market bits about
  12. Hhhmmm. He broke it so he fixes it. Simples. And a lesson learnt for you. But saying that I do borrow a saw now and again to do some work. But it's always returned in the same condition it came in and is always sharp when returned. I break it I fix it, that's my motto. Sounds like a hole in the tank part and depends on size of hole as to the damage caused. It can be repairable. My advice is to stripe it down, clean it up and take a good look and try and see where the oil is coming from, but it won't matter to you as the other guy will be doing this.
  13. Ok. The starting could be either low compression. Hold it by the pull cord and see how long it takes to drop. Could be a fuel issue, so blocked up carb, blocked tank filter or tank vent. Could also be weak or no spark. The tensioner sounds like a worn thread on tHe screw. Take it apart and check the tensioner, a worn thread will be easy to spot. Remove the spark plug and hold it against the cylinder while pulling over, see if the spark is nice and strong, also look at what colours the plug has on the electrodes. Also after pulling over and removing the plug is it wet with fuel. This will let you know if its getting fuel ok. Also remove the exhaust and look into the port into the cylinder and check the piston isn't scored badly. Get a pic up of this if you can.
  14. I'm tired so its a quick one from me. I dought needle height as its a new carb, but worth a look I suppose. Fuel lines or tank vent would be my port of call, not letting pressure build in the tank, so taking its time to get fuel up. That's about as far as my brain will let me go tonight. Sorry.

  16. The 020 carbs don't have the accelerator pumps. IMO the old carbs are still the best.
  17. Chances are it could be or it could not. Removed it and the tank filter and check the pipe for cracks or splits. Then clean the filter or replace it. I would try a known working carb if you have one.

  20. Urm. :confused1: Kind of what I was talking about. Ok. So srt is one rope up and either down and anchored at the base with only one bit of rope to climb on. Drt is a rope up and back down same way. This is where I get confused, I've seen people climb on these two ends together, but also like the hitch climber with one end fixed to the climbing aid and the other end hanging down. So working end and tail end.

  22. Air leak. Could be lack of fuel getting in. Blocked fuel filter Blocked carb Incorrect adjustment Leaking boot Leaking crank seals Leaking crank case To me sounds like classic air leak. Could just need a good clean out on the carb tho. First step try a good known working carb.
  23. Ok so going on from another thread. This is going to be really easy for some to answer and I'm going to look like a right idiot. Seen a few threads and posts referring to single rope technique and double rope technique. And on some I've seen a hitch climber being called single but I thought it was double and you are doubling the rope over and using both ends. Is this right or what? And best is can anyone explain with pictures or vids on it. Sorry I just get confused over the techniques and I'm looking for a bit of guidance over the difference. I currently rec climb on a hitch climber set up, this using the rope over the tree bell and back down, so in effect using bothe ends of the rope. Is this srt or drt??? Sorry I'm just confused over what's what. Also if anyone says what they climb with I.e, hitch climber, giri, lock jack, is there a chance of a picture of what you use please. Sorry its peace of mind really, I don't climb for work but interested in what's what.:blushing:

  25. Well for one not being a tree person (I don't know the difference between an oak and a sycamore) I find all the threads and posts interesting. Yeah ok some may be wrong, but it soon gets rectified, and I think 99% of the time its always backed up with solid evidence. I have been meaning to start a thread over what's the difference between single and double rope technique, but have felt I will sound very stupid in asking it. Maybe its the time to now. The climbing side and felling side I'm not good at, however the repairs of any machines is always a good read and I think that the techs and non techs but have a go people make the maintenance side a very good read and I'm always learning about saws and there habits. Overall its a top forum and always my first point of call on the net, the tab is always open on the iPad.
