    You will always require a permit from the council. As said before they will require site plans, the works being carried out and the expected times of which the TM will remain in place. You will also find with some councils that because of the nature of the work they will require a detailed risk assessment. As spruce pirate says the permits could take up to 30 days to go through

    Well i think the ash will be saved for something else. Over the years i have seen so much good wood been left to rot or used as firewood and with the advice of you guys it will save me putting time and effort into something for that to be wasted. Think i will get another good through some of these threads and get a better understanding of the types of woods and there uses. Thank you for your comments

    After a year of reading a threads in this forum and being inspired by the work of many people I have decided its time i got a mill and started milling and making my own stuff. Im quite keen on making a mix of furniture for indoors and out so i would like to know the best timbers to use where. I have several nice ash butts and several people asking for picnic benches so would the ash be good for this?

    I work for the council and get this on a daily basis. It is just typical public! we were once taking a tree down when this guy came out and gave us abuse because the tree we were taking down had his bird feeders in it and we should leave the tree for that purpose. Most commonly though we have the public out saying why are you taking that tree down instead of that one that blocks the light to my garden. It usually goes when we moved here that tree was only 6foot tall but now look at it. I dont think these people realise trees grow but i also beleive it more ignorance and arrogance than anything. I do think somtimes that dealing with the public is harder than the job itself sometimes.

    I agree I wouldnt rely on security firms and there is a risk but life is full of them even though this may just be a little riskier than normal. I would also agree with minotaur about doing your homework and getting as much info as possible but anyone looking for a great experience then go for it!

    I spent 6 months in Sierra Leone in 2004. The whole time there I seen no trouble and was based mainly in Freetown. This was my last tour with the army and I really enjoyed it but just found the level of poverty the hardest thing to deal with. Our armed forces are out there primarily to advise and train the sierra Leone army with the UN there to keep stability in the country. Also most contractors out there have security or bodyguards attached to them helping make it safer. If I didn't have young kids I would be off in a minute as I loved my time out there. Beautiful country with some of the best beaches in the world and a great life experience. This was many years ago a popular holiday destination with it now trying to promote that again and with any luck will establish this again

    I could think of extra things to add to it but would probably get us shut down but the idea is great as the public just dont pay attention to normal signs even though they know there meaning!

    Great thread, im looking to set up for myself in the future and this info and tips will greatly help when I get to that point. This is the best thing about this website, their are plenty of people with all the info and help that anyone in the buisness could need :thumbup:

    relative now changed there mind and would like bespoke log picnic table which is good as ive got some good ideas for that but as time is limited they will just have to wait. Now i can come up with some other plans for the planks ive got
