  1. I've got to ask, sorry, did she measure you up for a new outfit?
  2. Sounds like borrocks to me. They do pro.commercial use chains and domestic low-kickback chains, but I'm certain that they don't do two levels of quality of the same chain!
  3. Paul, there's a typo on your front page - Essex Country Council. And a redundant "friendly" in the sentence "Our friendly team know everything there is to know about tree removal and will always offer a friendly, professional and tidy service.". Ditch the first "friendly" and it will sound much better. Not that I'm a pedant of anything
  4. Sell them - listing on ebay..... encourage people to save the planet by planting trees, tell them how good they'll feel about themselves, and charge £10 each. Good bit of pocket money there
  5. Going to the bank on Friday to talk about the weather!
  6. Timbur, also think about what time it's best to do the work. You don't want to be mowing and strimming when there are customers with kids in the pub garden, so you'll need to get an early start to make sure finished well before lunch time.
  7. Forgot to say - for recently sold properties, go to Rightmove.co.uk and you can search for sold properties by checking the "Sold STC" box. Quite handy it is.
  8. We've gone without advertising for about 15 years. Word of mouth is good, BUT a lot of our older customers are dying off, and others are moving away, at the same time more and more firms are starting up or coming in from further afield and working in our area. There is only so much that word of mouth can do. So, recently we put ads in a local mag, which has already paid off. My daughter delivered leaflets in another area, and we got a call the following day with a big clearance job and more work to follow, so that's paid off. And we've just gone to Check-a-trade. This is something we swore we'd never do.... BUT that looks like it's just about to pay for itself in ONE week with a couple of jobs in already!
  9. Are you sure you can't get rid of grass cuttings on site? Why not compost them? You've got a whole acre there - that'll be a lot of grass to cart off. I reckon for mow and strim you've got to put it in as a half day. Weekly might be too often - possibly better off two-weekly. That way, if you get it done in 3 hours you can go off and do something else and you're quids in. Yet it still allows you 4 hours for a half. Then couple of times a year you can put in a whole day on top doing the shrubs etc.
  10. Make sure you've got extra enough money on the job to replace panes of glass in the greenhouse, just in case.
  11. I've just thought of a good one for anybody who might be interested..... "Leaf Encounter"
  12. It doesn't look right. Jaxon would be better if you want the Ax in there. I'd forget about the "sawn".
  13. Yeah, but if he's an arb taking on gardening and fencing and landscaping because he's short on tree work, I don't want to hear him then moaning about those of us whose core business is gardening and fencing and landscaping, taking on tree jobs when they arise.
  14. Cool. What that shows to me is that the double fishermans is a very secure and safe know, just not as strong as the spliced eye. Mind you, in typical use with a hitch and both ends secured by double fishermans to krab through a HC etc, then the load on the knots is halved. I really can't imagine how a fall would break it at all., unless it was a massive fall. Even then, the climber would break before the rope in the knot.
  15. Daughter got seriously injured and ended up in hospital for 2 weeks (she's fine now but we nearly lost her), and we all had a really hard time. I stayed in with her for second week and got really ill myself and ended up being admitted. Wasn't far off popping me clogs, and it got me thinking of all the times I've been walked over, all the years I haven't made anything of myself because of it, all the nothing that I've got to leave to my wife and kids when I do, and the whole episode gave me a kick in the rear. All of a sudden I won't take crap from anyone and things are going to change for the better. I feel better and more confident because of it.
  16. Swinny, it's often down to a lack of understanding methinks. Get people to see it from your point of view and most will then understand. If they're still giving you grief then either ignore it and carry on, or just walk away. I was a pushover in too many ways until 11.30am on 29 August 2011. Things changed for me over the following few days, now if anyone takes the pee, that's it, I'm done with them.
  17. We use a pedestrian flail, quite a biggy, and it's brilliant with brambles and anything else that gets in its way.
  18. I can't begin to imagine how it would be possible now. I was in full time employment on about £16k per year when I got my mortgage for £80k. Two weeks later I handed my notice in and started at uni and became self-employed. If I was trying to buy my house now then I'd be looking for a £300k mortgage with an income of £12k! Don't think it would happen. I've only got £65k left on the mortgage and I'm after borrowing £50k from the bank to complete a large home extension, but am too scared to approach them about it! Your best hope is if you can get someone to act as a guarantor, but that basically means they are putting their home at risk as well.
  19. Give them a day or so longer - it's bank holiday here today
  20. Same here. The lenses I use are soft daily disposables but tend to wear them continuously for a week or two at a time. No real problem with dust. If anything does contaminate them then I just replace them earlier. They've protected my cornea on several occasions too. I was thinking of having laser treatment, but mainly in case there is some massive disaster on Earth and I can no longer get hold of contact lenses. I really don't fancy trying to survive looking for food, fuel and shelter with short sight! As it is, the cost of laser surgery is too much for me - I spend about £80/year on lenses, and they're getting cheaper all the time. Laser surgery can need repeating 10 years down the line as eyesight changes, so in long term it might not be any cheaper. Also, I'm not keen on the possibility of having 'halos' around lights at night.
  21. That's good, but I do have one concern. You are taking on soil analysis, sending samples off for analysis, producing a report - is this something you are qualified to do? I know you mentioned a college course, but if you're providing soil analysis reports then it might be worth considering the implications of a wrong decision being made on the basis of the report you are providing. Just as a 'what if?', what if a developer was put to a load of additional expense and decided to seek a second professional opinion, which showed that your report was incorrect? There would be potential for a claim for compensation. Would your insurance cover it?
  22. I'm sticking with mine for commercial reasons
  23. My heart goes out to the little fella's family and friends. Very sad news indeed.
  24. There's no 'simple' pH test. If the goal is to characterise a whole site then a properly designed sampling protocol needs to be employed, so that you can obtain a result that means something. This can involve taking many sample, measuring pH, and using analysis of variance, to get an idea of the uncertainty in pH measurements across the site and to determine how the pH varies both across the site and at varying depth. If you pop along to the site, take a sample, measure the pH and put in a report that the 'soil pH is 8.1'. then it means nothing. You could well measure pH at a different depth or at a different sample location and get a completely different result.
