  1. Anyone going for a smoke down the bottom of the bank?
  2. That made me llllllllllarff
  3. How about this then.... We turned up today to cut a customer's law, all pre-arranged and it's one we do every 2 weeks. Work mate went round back of house and was surprised to see it had already been cut. Knocked on door, spoke to customer....... and guess what....... the WINDOW CLEANER cut it yesterday afternoon! WTF!!!! The customer tried to blame it on old age, but when I mentioned it to me Mrs she said "Yeah, that excuse, playing the lovely little old lady card!"
  4. I don't see why future management would be particularly difficult. There are only a few trees there now, all on the university land back from the pavement. Could access with a climber or a MEWP from university grounds, surely. I think the problem is being over-exaggerated a bit to make a point, maybe?
  5. Is there an Irish Spud?
  6. Can you straight the entry bars up? They're not load bearing are they?
  7. The way I meant it is in terms of how useful or important the favours are, IYSWIM.
  8. I think the simple reason is because they're not shiny.
  9. I didn't mean in monetary terms.
  10. How much are the returned favours worth? Try this - before you do your favour, just get in your head the thought that the returned favour will be worth more to you than the favour you have done and see if the returned favours get bigger!
  11. Funny nobody noticed that there's only half the number of trees in that line now. Alternate ones having been felled and all.
  12. Well, the app was put in to "re-pollard", an arboricultural report was submitted with it as a supporting document, the proposed work details were put to public consultation, anybody could have raised an objection or concerns. Fact is, despite what everybody says here, nobody, including all those who have slated the work, gave enough of a monkeys to bother. If any of you were that concerned and didn't have faith in the tree officers then you would be checking the Planning Portal all the time for upcoming works, and raising concerns and giving your opinions on how the job should be done. ANYWAY, I thought there was some forum rule that said we're not allowed to post pictures of other people's work for slating..... Just sayin'. That's all. I bet the uni could put an app in to completely remove them all and replace with Leylandii and none of you would notice that app either
  13. The thing is, nobody placed any objections to the planning application to fell 13 trees and to re-pollard the trees in Lord Mayor's Walk. It's a re-pollard, which is why, I should think, they have just been done to the cuts that were there before. See the planning details here: 11/00849/TCA | Fell (T1,4,9,10,12,16,24,26,28,30,32,34,36), re-pollard remaining Trees in the Conservation Area | York St John University Lord Mayors Walk York YO31 7EX
  14. Nice happy face there
  15. Where I am it was chucking down first thing so decided to stay here sorting out paperwork and doing some marketing work for other business. About an hour ago though, it brightened up a bit and now I'm cursing as we could have worked this afternoon - more money down the pan! I'm really hoping the heavens open shortly.
  16. True, but I didn't realise the firm leafleting was pretending to be another firm with better kit.
  17. But then again, they might be a good legit firm who are trying to get work to save laying off employees. Who knows.
  18. I do know what you mean, seriously. Getting company know today, while it's chucking down, is going to be through producing some decent letters to send out.
  19. We don't have a turn either, but we do have the local area around where we are based. Due to apathy on our part over the past year, and thinking we wouldn't lose a couple of big customers, we have a tough time so far this year and have found our local area (turf) being made smaller and smaller by more firms coming in from further afield. We have just started advertising and doing leafleting a bit further afield to try and spread out again. If I planned to leaflet "Leaflety Avenue" in the next town, and I noticed another firm working there, I would still go ahead and leaflet regardless, being pretty certain that they would do the same. I've grown to accept it for what it is, which is why I no longer cry when I see another landscaping firm working for the lady over the road.
  20. But you do work at places near where other people work, like on other peoples turf? And other people work on your turf. I know it's a pain in the arris, but when we've been fencing, other fencing firms leaflet doors in the same road. A lot of these fencing firms are builders who are lacking in work and just trying to make a living. It's just life.
  21. I literally mean it's swings and roundabouts in that: - you may well have worked in an area where someone else has done work, - you may have leafleted an area where someone else has worked, - you may have leafleted an that someone else has leafleted, - you may have put an ad in a local mag where someone else has an ad. It's same with every other firm. We've got a pizza place and an Indian near us, they deliver a lot around here, but we also receive leaflets from fast food firms a couple of miles away. It's called competition, and everybody is allowed to take part. Imagine what it would be like if the local authority drew up a list, and said that Firm A is only allowed to work in post code areas X1 1AA to X1 1MZ and Firm B is only allowed to work in post code areas X1 1NA to X1 1NZ. If every single firm gets really protective about their area then it screws everything up, bit like the postcode gangs. Mind you, a lot of people are decent and won't do this sort of thing deliberately. I'd wait for the truck to drive off before leafleting
  22. Swings and roundabouts though, init?
  23. Them look like right hard bastid trees! I have a tough enough time with hawthorn:blushing:
  24. Honestly, hand on wallet, I am.
  25. Dunno what you're all upset about - in these times of economic hardship, we can't have local councils paying people to sweep up leaves. And just look at that "before" picture - far too many leaves on the pavement. Someone might trip over one.
