  1. Satuday afternoon football results so dad could fill in the pools. Wanderers2, City1 and on, and on, and on. Just wanted it over so I could watch Doctor Who.
  2. customer. "do you have a mower I can borrow for the weekend?" me "has the John Deere I sold you last year gone wrong then?" customer " no, its fine. But I have just moved house and the builders have left the lawn in a mess so I dont want to use mine to start with in case it gets damaged"
  3. You should see the number of two stroke machines that are brought in for me to fix just after being loaned out to a friend. Most are fried because the 'friend' had no idea how to use it or fuel it. Most 'friends' neglect to tell the lender that it no longer works.
  4. Do you remember the Jackson brothers Jon?
  5. This makes you think.
  6. A bit after my childhood, but I remember finding my kids watching this. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrmbFh4WT70]Pippi Loves Spunk - YouTube[/ame]
  7. The purpose of a washer is to spread the load on the parent material so that it supports the load of the bolt head. So a bolt holding a cast iron gearbox to an engine does not need a washer, whereas a bolt holding an aluminium one might. The tendancy is to use flanged bolts and nuts on aluminium rather than washers. The Verbus flanged bolts also have little teeth under the flange which helps to prevent loosening.
  8. Exactly. And they new system is easier for everyone except the dishonest minority.
  9. And filling the last few spaces in the roof of a dutch barn on a hot summers day was like being in a sauna with a red hot ceiling, especially if the hay was just a little too wet. And the smell of that chemical stuff that was all the rage in the 70's to stop the hay going off was a bit overpowering. I bet it was not safe to use. I remember falling off the top of a 10 layer load when the bale slipped thst I was lying on to drop others to the elevator whilst making the unloading "hole". Landed on my side on hard packed earth and knocked every bit of wind out of me. The farmers daughter cradled my head on her lap and brought me round with a jar of cider being poured gently through my lips. (Standard First Aid)
  10. But that is no different to the system we have had for years. Its just that its done automatically now rather than having to be claimed.
  11. When i was a kid my parents had the first telephone in the street. Neighbours would queue on our doorstep to use the new fangled thing, all leaving their money in an empty Horlicks jar beside the phone on the hall table. Then, when the thing rang in the middle of the night it was seldom for us, so I would be sent up the street in my slippers and dressing gown to fetch old Mrs Jones to speak to her daughter. Later, when Lyn and myself started married life we had a single tub washing machine and a mangle on a stand in the garage. The first car I had was an Austin A60 but could not drive far as petrol was rationed, I think it was due to Suez or something. But when I did drive i could also drink a skin full and drive home as there was no breathalyser to worry about.
  12. As of 1st October the disc in the window has no significance, it can be destroyed. So you will not be able to use it as a selling point. The tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. When the DVLA receive the sellers part of the V5 doc they will automatically issue a refund of any whole months left, so one less thing for you to have to do. Simples.
  13. It might run better with a clean filter!
  14. Exactly. Things can only be better with the new system. At least my disc wont keep falling off!
  15. There was a haulage contractor a few years ago who had two identical fleets, one in the north of england, and one in the west country. He was OK until number plate recognition software logged one of his registrations 400 miles apart in less than a hour.
  16. .....But then again, there are a lot of things I have never seen.
  17. I have had several newish Stihls brought back with the chain brake issue. A good clean and grease of the linkage gets them working again for a while. But I just cannot understand why Stihl have not sorted the problem, after all, they have known about it for years.
  18. That will be it. I have about 10 bags stored in a corner of my garage and every metal object nearby is rusty.
  19. Aspen is without doubt the way to go for occasional users. I have hundreds of very satisfied customers.
  20. The trouble is that salt is also hygroscopic and thus very difficult to keep dry.
  21. I had a cat for years, but when it died the garden became overrun with rabbits. There were hundreds of the things eating my lawn and leaving thousands of little round things everywhere. So we got another cat and the rabbits have disappeared into the cat which is good news, except for the fact that she stores dissected rabbits in the shed where she lives which can be a bit smelly. On the downside, many of the Robins in the garden have also disappeared into the cat. She can't quite catch the squirrels but she has proved to be excellent at catching moles, which she never tries to eat. I have never yet seen a dog get the better of a good cat.
  22. The TT20K seems to be the industry norm. I have one, as well as Stihl one, but use the TT in preference as it seems to pick up an inductive signal at a greater distance. It has a rubber case and can sit happily on the bench beside a firmly held MS200T revving at 14K!
  23. The genuine hitachi bar is only £19.07 plus vat. And, as far as I know, the Tanaka and Hitachi Top Handle saws have only ever had 3/8 chains for the UK market. 14" will be a bit big for the saw though, best to stick to the 12" IN MY OPINION
  24. [quote=hedgesparrow;1161847 but get a VHF radio do NOT relies on a mobile they do not work at sea. And just be aware that you need a VHF radio licence to have a radio on a boat, and also an operators licence to be able to use it! Also don't forget to get full insurance on your craft for 3rd party liability even if you don't want to insure the vessel itself. As others have said, a boat is a money pit. But I would not be without mine.
  25. Some of the early Shetlands were built with a 15" transom which require a standard shaft OB, but in the interests of giving the boat more freeboard, they were later built with a 20" transom for a long shaft. And.. by all accounts there were some built in between the 15" and the 20". So, to match the outboard you need to measure the transom, from the top horizontal surface to the point at the bottom. Then measure the OB, the anti cavitation plate over the prop should sit just level with the bottom of the boat when in correct 'trim' (or very, very slightly higher) If the shaft is too long the performance will be lost due to drag and exhaust back pressure amongst other reasons. It will also effect the ability to work in the shallows if for example, you want to visit a beach for a picnic. Be very careful when buying a used motor to check that the cooling passages are clear of salt crystals. I bought one a few years ago that was immaculate. It had only been used once, the prop was unmarked. It had then been stored for a dozen years in a garage. It started and ran fine but siezed up on the first voyage after 15 minutes and right in the middle of the tidal race in the Exe estuary. When I dissmantled it the cooling passages were completely choked with salt crystal growth as it had nor been flushed before storage.
