  1. I would have thought the first people too complain to would be the local authority environmental health team. If the incident also raises a pollution concern then the Environment Agency hotline 0800 80 70 60
  2. The flowers are an early spring show, I didn't think it persisted and only grew on recently disturbed ground.
  3. I was being. The simple fact is that the thieves cannot be traced and whilst all of us with insured machines are the overall losers the one who takes the big hit is the guy who inadvertently buys the stolen goods because he wasn't prudent in carrying out checks.
  4. Yes About 1/2 hour of light pruning per charge Twice the bar length with 3 or 4 fully charged batteries if you're lucky. It's a good topping saw, not as quiet as expected but but reasonable for light use.
  5. I have just dealt with a stolen recovered machine, I have mixed feelings about telling the police now as they will not pursue the case yet the insurers, who paid out in full for the machine, will now take it from the guy that bought it in good faith. As far as I can tell it still has all the original serial numbers so a check with the importer would have flagged a problem.
  6. It shouldn't make any difference but in practice it may. VOA are the people that decide if a premises is rateable but since April the local LA gets to keep a proportion of the business rate, this has made my LA very amenable to large business schemes in the face of green belt rules.. Paying rates may be evidence of change of use but it will need ten years to pass for entitlement to that use. Planning is a separate issue and if the building already exists, in good condition, and redundant they must allow a change of use. There is a hierarchy of uses which has to be considered. Since April there has also been a relaxation of how use may be changed between categories unless the LA applied for an exemption. This was a dangerous change in a crowded country IMO. The chief means of changes occurring under the planning system is that planning departments have retained all their powers but their budgets cut so badly that many abuses which would previously been enforced now get through the net.
  7. "Do as you would be done by" I've stuck with it but it's not often reciprocated
  8. Yes I'm looking to change after this letter too, I'm nearly retired so I might just look to a basic personal account if anyone knows of a free banking account.
  9. Thanks that seems the same then
  10. Wise ...but did you wear face masks See mine, leaves look line padus but bark is grey/green
  11. Did you get any pictures of the bark? I have been struggling over the ident for what seems to be padus, leaf as yours with red petiole, but the bark looks distinctly ailanthus like rather than dark with lenticels.
  12. Probably applies to all parts. Jensen blades are similar and cost 80 quid, greenmech discs 40 quid, so a set is about the same yet you can turn the greenmech 3 times. How many times may each be sharpened? and at what cost?
  13. I think you mean a previously developed site and anything with a building is that.
  14. Notionally about 40% of the rateable value which itself is supposed to be calculated on the open market rent but if it's in dispute and is still agricultural then no rates. There is a rate holiday for small businesses with under 65m2 in my area but I'm unsure this is universal.
  15. I agree, perfect bit of practice and possibly less mess.
  16. I similarly bought a new Husqvarna 165r to do piecework weeding in 1974, it still works at my brother's house. It annoyed the fellow employees so much that they refused to work by me. Even with the cost of 2 gallons of petroil per day it more than paid over a fagging hook in woody weeds.
  17. It looks fairly recent with only a year or so's callus under the retained bark, no depressed area yet. No signs of torn fibres so not mechanical. Crown seems healthy so I'm tending to heat damage. The shape of the area of necrotic bark will be telling.
  18. I suspect the gangs I see work a bit harder when I'm there but they arrive at 6:00 travel to site and seldom get back before 17:00 and are expected to work anywhere any time. This is a much longer working day than I was used to and anyone worth his salt with a few years experience needs over a tenner/hour.
  19. It Certainly Would be and that's what went into the kindling boxes at Tescos through out the country.
  20. ...but would cutting a piece off a stump count as cross cutting?
  21. No I'll not be there and he must be in compliance for this customer
  22. I was assessed in the 90s for felling large trees so I've not been concerned with what the current requirements are but I have a lad that has been assessed to fell up to 15" who wants to use my 25" saw to reduce some stumps prior to stump grinding. What tickets should he hold for this?
  23. Opposite way around, because there were so many claims from farmers with burned crops the trackside was maintained with gangs of men with fagging hooks. With the end of the steam era this maintenance stopped and trees grew up. Then came the problem of leaves crushed into the running rail affecting the conductivity of the sensors for the signalling...
  24. What sort of life do you get from a diamond file? Any recommendations? The Silky file is quite expensive as I recall. I've kept my old silky blades intending to get round to sharpening and now I shall try it. There must be a limit when the the tooth works down the taper and saw clearance it lost, it's not like they can be set like a traditional saw. I admit I wasn't aware of the final ramp being to stop the saw grabbing on the push stroke.
  25. I agree on both these observations and you explained that so much better than I could. Good job he missed that iron when he sliced the log.
