Yes from the EA perspective virgin timber is not a waste, hedge cuttings are, but the exemptions depend on planning permission and storing wood is not an agricultural use of a field so a change of use is involved. Which means making an application or getting a certificate of lawful use after 10 years with no enforcement. So a firewood operation may not need an exemption but will require planning permission, along with which comes a rates liability. Given that a waste is something ordinarily discards from the activity the logging operation may be producing wastes which will require exemption. Essentially there are different exemptions that cover wood, S ones for storage, T ones for treatment and U ones for the final use. D ones are for if you wish to dispose of it on the site, as mulch or burning for heat for example. Not many firms I've seen comply with the requirements and EA don't pursue unless someone has wound them up.
  2. I understand. Yes mostly the tyre disposal cost was part of the new tyre and fitting transaction. In my last year working for a small firm I looked after the workshops alongside my other duties. So for the last two years I have collected all the old scrap tyres which ended up on the site and delivered them down to our local tyre recycler by the transit load and I paid 75p for car tyres, £2 for transit sized tyres and £8 for lorry tyres, I did not buy any tyres from him. When I unexpectedly took retirement rather than demotion I left a legacy of 1 forwarder tyre and about 8 rubber tracks from chippers which were going to cost a lot more to dispose.

I don't know but they will have expertise and channels to decide whether disposal to a cement factory, re treading , recycling as tyre crumb etc are the best options without necessarilly rehandling or resorting. Mind our local place seems to stack them all in one heap. As far as I know the civic amenities sites are franchised out to waste disposal firms who in turn license totters on the sites. Yes, they have had their budgets cut along with the NHS, police, schools etc. whilst their administrative load has increased with increased regulations. At the same time commerce has become more attractive as senior management wage levels have rocketed in the larger companies.
  4. I was interested to see our civic amenities site were going to charge £4 for car tyre disposal which the local tyre dealer does for £1. I'd dearly like to see what fractions of the recycling stream at a civic amenities site make a profit over running costs. Brick rubble never was part of the LA's remit, neither was greenwaste, they often used accepting of these wastes as a means to drag up the recycling figures.

  7. Must be the heizohack that had clutch like that then, memory playing up. I quite liked the flyback jockey wheel on thekwikchip, no chance of it working its way down as you drive along. Glad it has done well for you.
  8. Looks much the same as on the kwikchip? I have a spring sitting on my workbench somewhere for the jockey wheel. On another point, is there a way of telling what the standard of bellhousing bolt pattern is? I have a rebuilt 2.3 pug 504 engine which never got fitted because the gearbox failed, so was wondering about a stationary use for it.
  9. The difference from benefit fraud is one: it isn't unlawful and two: the sums gained are much larger.

I've never bothered with this second bit as I had 4WD but: so a long wheelbase Kangoo, not being a car derived van, with rear seats and windows at side and back could well be a dual purpose vehicle as long as the seating area is more than a 33% of the total interior behind the steering wheel??

Here are two scenarios from real life: A rep for a chipper company takes a trailer with a chipper on it to demonstrate to a customer within 100km of base, he spends 1.5 hours driving there, does 2 hour demo then returns to office for 1.5 hours. The next week the customer buys the vehicle delivered to his premises again within 100km of dealer First doesn't require a tacho second does. In practice the dealer was only prosecuted for a delivery over 100km from base. IIRC £200 fine and £1200 to fit tacho in Discovery. I never found out what brought the outfit to the attention of the authorities, it may have been another traffic offence but once stopped they start looking.
  12. It only applies to vehicles over 3500kg so: If carrying your own tools (plant for example) for your own use on site, and driving is not the main activity, within a radius of 100km of base and the vehicle plus any trailer exceeds 3500kg and has MAM less than 7500kg =no
  13. Use one of the old fashioned bean or soup tins from Aldi, Run the can opener 7/8 of way round and prise the lid open. Empty contents into food bowl for later, rinse container and stack willow twigs that are just shorter than inside, fold lid closed and bury lid end upside down in hot coals. Add logs around and wait.. You will first notice steam coming from below the ash and then a white offgas, which will ignite. Keep burn going until no further flames. Make sure lid is kept below ash as it cools.
  14. Yes easily done, I found the metal whisky bottle container worked well but a square biscuit tin upside down is fine. We used to make drawing charcoal from willow twigs this way using a baked bean tin upside down in the ash.
  15. What's not true? I'm just saying it seems to be illogical that a DPV up to 3500kg MAM should continue to only require a class 4 test when all other commercial vehicles over 3000kg require a class 7. I can see it being an issue if your local MOT station can only do class 4. I take your point about currently this would lead to a DPV having the wrong class of MOT but as the Class 7 MOT tests all the items a class 4 does and some more I cannot see an offence being committed by having a class 7 MOT. It no longer affects me but my LR110 had a class 7 test for a number of years despite being a DPV.
  16. I don't see it is a big problem in that we know the definition for DPV allows it to be treated as a car for speed limits. We also know a commercial vehicle with a MAM of over 3000kg requires a class 7 test. So the notice essentially says if the MAM on the VIN plate is more than 3000 then apply class7 MOT, if less then class 4. I wasn't happy to accept paying an extra £5 to test my LR 110 which was a DPV and had a MAM of 3050 but it wasn't worth arguing over. This now seems sensible to me without affecting anything else about the use of a DPV.
  17. I don't know in the OP's case but the pellet stoves had induced draught fans so choking the outlet would cause problems.
  18. That looks like it's a 6 or 8 inch flue? I'd say it could be fitted under the elbow and behind the stove but I would like it to be low down to reduce any chance of blowback (which seems highly unlikely as the issue appears to be too much draught). There's this picture on a US ebay site 6" Stove Pipe Draft Control Tee Damper Regulator B34TJ06 New | eBay Ours was a 4" one and TEEd into a 6" flue, I'm still in contact with my old boss but one and can get his advice about regulations if necessary. Which may give a better idea of how one might fit below your existing flue but you'd need to find a UK supplier and read the correct way to install.

  21. No not the facts just stick with them with no comment about what might have been, just the fact you could not buy the timber until the deposit had been paid is sufficient.

  24. That's brilliant, the transits I looked after came in at 2100 with chip body and could tow only 2.25 tonnes.
