1. Domestic jobs are one that exise do allow in their memorandum for rebated fuel. The problem ones are commercial sites. Carrying arisings could be an issue over 25 miles but that's a different set of regulations. IMO this whole business of rebated fuel is weird, as the road fuel duty is not used for roads there's really no reason not to tax all hydrocarbon fuels the same except it would cause a problem for heating fuels.
2. We did a few of these for revetment work, the idea was for them to fill with silt. They wanted them (bavins for the more pc) loose enough to drive stakes through. The demand was so varied and seasonal we had to knock it on the head after loads weren't collected.
3. ... but wasn't this the case about nurses who had purchased parking permits where only a small number of spaces were available in staff car parks having to park in other non staff spaces?
4. I'll stay off pricing it, always was too cheap. Marc is probably right and it's a pissard plum
5. It's an interesting one as it's in the same week they have announced lifespans are no longer increasing. Still I wonder how affordable even 18 years of pension will be plus of course the ever rising cost of healthcare for us oldies.
6. All good advice. I make sure my wood is all stacked by May as I only have space for one year's wood. It's oak and chestnut seem to dry slowest whereas sycamore and alder dry quick if cut short 10" and split small. From experiments last year as long as the airflow is good you can get down to 20% in a month under cover of summer temperatures http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/firewood-forum/89345-last-month-process-logs-sell-coming-winter-13.html#post1377335
7. This may be the case for the driver's licence if the test was taken after 1997 and the trailer weighs more than 750kg. In fact it is slightly more complicated as the mam of the towing vehicle plus the mam of the trailer must sum to less than 3500kg so even if the actual weights may sum to less than 3500 the combo may be unlawful for the licence.
8. So the php script that sees the request from your browser and then builds the page is misinterpreting something. As I can see 453 either your browser is sending the wrong request or the server doesn't like the request. Have you tried another browser? http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/lounge/101095-making-news-today-453.html
9. It may be your browser. I occasionally have a similar problem viewing with Firefox but try it in Opera and it's fine.
10. Fist time I saw a Lokomo working was on a bank bringing 7.5m douglas up backwards 5 tonne at a time, I wouldn't have dared put a tractor over the edge but would still have been cheaper winching tree lengths up. Nowhere near as steep as yours but here is a picture of yesterday's milling in situ at 8 degrees slope. Risk assessment decided that an assisting line was necessary to secure power head and reduce fatigue of operator. I was happy to be back working but productivity was low and carrying those oak 4.5m x 150mm x 50mm planks off the mill and only 20 metres up slope was wearing. I decided in 1984 there was no future in hefting wood so I bought a grapple loader. I think the miller would have been better off with an 18 year old rugby player than little ole me.
11. I was wondering what the results of emerald borer might be:001_smile: Hornet moths make big holes too.
12. I think the point is the lady used the phrase in a non pejorative way to give a sense to the hidden surprises that await us if a deal cannot be struck. Someone has used it as an excuse to withdraw the whip. Some politician get away with murder...
13. It was a phrase from my childhood along with golly wogs and badges from robertsons jam. I guess it will die out with my generation along with eyties, spicks and dagos. Black things were often named such -. .. --. --. . .-.
14. I've had a brief google and cannot see a cite for that, it seems to refer to hiding escaped slaves.
15. I wish I knew that when an old family friend used the term in talking to a subordinate volunteer at our local CAB, she was plainly disruptive but he lost his voluntary position as local chief exec as a result on grounds of racist language.
16. Probably common furnitiure beetle or powder post beetle, ash is one of their favourites until its moisture content drops below 20%, they will have a go if it's rewetted. Frass
17. I think he may be referring to a woolly maggot. I found geese were good in summer but the mess never dried out in winter.
18. I agree that a plant trailer at 1800 quid is a fraction of the cost of the chipper but that's not what the OP asked. As I said the Forst tr6 is too long by 9" (23cms) Which of your 6" tracked chippers will fit?
19. You cannot, all the time it maintains apical dominance ( a desire for one leader to head for the sky in competition with even its lower branches) the height growth is a factor of the growing conditions. You can formative prune to get a shape or stem length you desire.
20. If £50/hour works for you then fine but: They will sooner or later ask someone else anyway Could you fit in other work and make your normal day rate? You met the tree officer, managed the formalities and ran the job, £350 seems fair enough.
21. I'd say employment so the boss can pay for your mistakes. I had no option as I was unemployable so it was an expensive learning curve. Also most people know from an early age if they can make money and it's them that should run their own businesses. I was ok as my own boss but too soft with dealing. I ended up as a cog in a bigger machine where I found a niche but it was too late to really benefit from it.
22. Thanks Steve, it's not working yet but I'll keep trying
