    A good alternative would be a " Sprocker " Say 3/4 Cocker 1/4 Springer . That way you would still keep the size of the Cocker . One of the best dogs I had was a Sprocker . He is in my avatar .

    I would go for a " working " Cocker as opposed to a " show " type . They are hardier and less in bread generally . Less to go wrong

    Should use coolant . Won't be case hardening though . That involves heating up and dipping in carbon . Work hardening , yes .
