Quite rare and quite attractive... the side branch being in contact with the adjacent tree has caused the two trees to fuse. If the area is not frequently used, I would retain the trees as a curiosity. However, as the fusing may have reduced the structural integrity of the stem, there may be a higher risk of the top snapping out and if there is very frequent pedestrian traffic, you may wish to fence off the trees or carry out pruning to reduce the loading on the weak point, or as you say, remove them.

Industry standard is LANTRA PTI. Did mine with TreeLife. Having this has got me work that I otherwise wouldn't have got. For instance Transport for London insisted on their surveyors being PTI qualified. Maybe have a chat with treelife and they will advise if you have the requisite knowledge or if you should do basic tree inspection first....

great thread, i'll be 40 in a few months and am keen to get back up trees, doing the tree officer bit is alright if you like that kind of thing but i prefer the smell of two stroke in the morning.

Given high target value & trees that have previously required bracing, would strongly recommend phased removal and replacement, commencing with the most defective specimens. Say you install new bracing, it then fails, kills a kid. Judge asks 'were you were aware of previous bracing failures?' You retained defective trees in a high target area with cabling systems prone to failure. better get some soap on a rope...

Roughly one inch in circumference for each year. Are you certain that the trees that have grown since the TPO was made are not protected by it? Because if it was a woodland TPO, all new trees would be protected.

I would reasonably assume it to be fair game, never heard of protected mistletoe. You'd only need the tree owners permission.
